The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Domestic Trailer

parnassus_review_header

Finally, there’s a US trailer for Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Which, to a lot of you will mean: finally, there’s a trailer that gives too much away and tries to hard to sell the movie as something it might not be. But that’s neither here nor there. In fact, it’s not a problem at all. This is almost exactly the same as the UK trailer that arrived in August. A few insignificant seconds longer, that’s all. It’s quite a lovely trailer, really, especially in that it hints at the notion that this might be a highly imaginative, magical piece of film while not going all ghoulish with the fact that it is Heath Ledger’s final performance. It’s tasteful, really, and I appreciate that. Plus there’s a healthy dose of Tom Waits (I’m always such an easy mark for him) and a good indication of the presence of Ledger’s surrogates Colin Farrell, Jude Law and Johnny Depp.

And, as things go, this trailer is equally restrained in the sense that it doesn’t seem to give the whole bloody film to you in a basket. There’s enough to suggest that it might be Gilliam’s most fantastic movie (in the purest sense of the word) since Munchausen, and that’s just fine. Beyond that there’s just enough plot to hang the images on.

In case you missed it, we’ve run quite a glowing review of the film from Brendon. I can’t speak to his position on the thing, because I haven’t seen it. If you just want the basics (and have somehow missed those, too) here they are in brief:

In the present day, immortal 1,000-year-old Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) leads a traveling theatre troupe—including a sleight of hand expert, Anton (Andrew Garfield), and a dwarf, Percy (Verne Troyer)—that offers audience members a chance to go beyond reality through a magical mirror in his possession. Parnassus had been able to guide the imagination of others through a deal with the Devil (Tom Waits), who now comes to collect on the arrangement, targeting the doctor’s daughter (Lily Cole). The troupe, which is joined by a mysterious outsider named Tony (portrayed by Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell), embark through parallel worlds to rescue the girl.

20 years on ! can anyone remember 'The Baron Of Maunchausen' ? Just dont remind the director. It ran over budget by over £30 million dollars ! Gilliam's latest film seems to mirror it in many respects, but will gross alot of money at the box office because it is Heath Ledgers last film and features a triple whammy of other screen heartthrobs such as Depp,Farrell and Law.One needn't look further than the trailer see that the Lavish set and costume design draws people in. But is there any story? probably not. This is one of Gilliam's main shortcomings.Other than 'Twelve Monkeys', and 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' (two of his much better films)where he successfully manages to keep his head and not go off track by allowing his surreal, visual style to destroy the narrative of the story.

As Roger Ebert once so astutely pointed out, filmmaking is a visual medium. It's images first, ideas second. Some people (myself most definitely included) simply don't care if the plot isn't soundly structured and adheres to a strict three-act formula or whatever. Baron Munchausen goes hogwild and I fucking LOVE that movie.

To quote the good Baron himself (and by extenstion, Terry Gilliam): "Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever."

And boy do I love the final line of that trailer: Nothing is permanent, not even death. As Heath's legacy lives on. Beautiful.

My most anticipated of the year. Cannot wait, and it's a shame that it probably won't be in any theater in my area. I'll make as big of a trip as I have to though.

Gilliam is and always will be a treat!

After editing, how much actual screen time will Ledger get? It's not clear from Brendon's review, but the trailer seems to advertise that it's a lot, which makes me suspicious. They did the same thing with De Niro in Copland, and it turned out that he was only in it for a few minutes.

So, who wins the most appealingly spectacular visual cinematic feast award:
    James Cameron (so far nope)
Roland Emmerich (utter lack of imagination)
    and the winner is ...

    TE-RRRYYY GILL-IAMMMM!!!!
    (at least in my book)
  • Wait what!? It didn't even list Heath Ledger!? (or am I crazy >.>)
  • JimBob
    THE IMAGINARIUM LOOKS AWESOME!!!!!!!!
  • viewer
    Awful rubbish.
  • stacey123
I saw this yesterday...very disappointing. Special effects are brilliant and the idea is great but the movie kind of loses its way and doesnt capitalise on its potential. I noticed many people in the theatre fidgeting in their seats half way through aswell so I dont think i was the only one a bit bored.
