First Look: Promo Art for Ong Bak 3

ongbak3_slice

Ong Bak 2 has barely had time to register in North America, recently premiering at the Toronto Film Festival and soon to be part of Magnet’s Six-Shooter Film Series. But a third film is already in production, and the first teaser art for Ong Bak 3 has been released. It has a big ‘3′ written in fire, so yeah, that’s awesome.

Twitch has the new image, and because Tony Jaa looks a bit different in this image than he did in the art for the second film, they theorize that, once again, this isn’t a direct sequel, or possibly even a related sequel to other of the existing movies. Which is fine, really, because the only reason to see these films is to watch Jaa beat the hell out of thugs and elephants, and he can do that anywhere, anywhen. Is this a ’spiritual sequel’, making a trilogy of thematically related films? Who cares? This is one of the times where story and character just isn’t important, as long as the physicality is there.

The more interesting thing here is that the third film has been in production with very little fanfare. If you’ll recall, the second was directed by Jaa against the advice of his mentor. Jaa eventually lost it while trying to manage the high-budget film, and fled into the forest, where he remained for sometime. Eventually he returned to Bangkok, made a tearful apology on national television and went back to work on the movie, but not before claiming that he was the target of a kidnapping conspiracy. In other words, production on the second film was NUTS, so no surprise that this one has been a much quieter production.

Twitch reports that production on this one is almost finished, with a first quarter 2010 release planned in Thailand. At one point there was a plan to shoot this movie on some of the rather expensive sets built for the second film, but we’re not sure if that has happened. Twitch is also unsure if Jaa or his mentor, Panna Rittikrai, is directing. Rittikrai took over Ong Bak 2 when Jaa lost it, and had reportedly planned to keep some of that footage for use in the third film, but we don’t know if that plan has been enacted, either.

What we do know: Tony Jaa will beat people up with his elbows a third time. Good enough.

  • Cool. Hopefully there will be loss focus on weapons and more on his insane hand-to-hand.. I loved Ong Bak and The Protector especially, but OB2 really let me down.
  • hassanaah
WHAT,.. LOL, OB2 was a LET DOWN on what PLANET
  • Do we know who is directing? Ong bak 2 was pretty weak as far as being more coherent and fun than Ong bak 1. I blame Tony Jaa for attempting to step up to the director's chair literally snapping under pressure.
  • hassanaah
ANOTHER CORNBALL LOL,you all cant be REAL MARTIAL ART FANS!
  • Allm0st
Dude I am a big martial art fan and I promise you Ong Bak 2 was NOT as good as Ong Bak thus being a LET DOWN or a disappointment. For Tony Jaa to be directing it I thought it was decent.
But if you want to say I am not a real martial art fan for not enjoying the film as well as I did Ong Bak well it's safe to say I am not you.

Ong Bak 2 was great! I'll admit that the first half was slower than I'd liked it to have been, BUT... the action and fighting scenes KICKED ASS! I've seen it like 5 times now and cannot wait for this.

From what I know about OB3 it is a DIRECT SEQUEL and Tiang's legs and arms will be damaged by torture and require Jaa's character to "fight with some sort of boneless action.
  • TheTrebor
I also say that Onk Bak 2 was weak i enjoyed it but not as much as The Protector or Ong Bak. I hope the third one is more like the first one, i always say less story telling more action!!! Nah I don't say that, it just popped in my head.
  • hassanaah
exposing the ANCIENT side of Muay tai was GREAT,... IT went PERFECTLY with the story! To FUMBLE the word WEAK and attach it to ONG BAK 2 is very CRACK HEAD LIKE to say the LEAST.....WOW...LOL!!!

    OB2 is shit. Pure garbage.

I'll admit the fight scenes were awesome, but that's it. Other than the fight scenes, they were oh so boring and were all slow motioned. Its so ugly you could puke. If Jaa direct OB3 again I'm sure I'll just skipped the movie and watch the fight scenes on YouTube instead.

OB2 proves that Jaa is an incredible martial artist, but a shitty director--probably the worst director, ever.

WHAT a DOPE,...you should just stick to watching UFC,you most be a DESCENDENT from the CAUCAS MOUNTIANS...still with NO CONCEPT of TRUE CULTURE...LOL!

I don't understand why some people didn't like Ong Bak 2. It's filled with action from beginning till the end, with amazing fights that only get better while the movie progresses.
I admit it's nothing like Ong Bak, which is my favourit martial arts movie ever, but you can't say it isn't a fantastic movie. I've watched all his movies several times and I hope they release it soon in Europe as well....
  • jungram
    great movies

I really liked Ong Bak, even with Ong Bak 2 not meeting my expectations I still enjoyed both films and look forward to seeing this one. Hopefully not in 3D.
