THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG

Walt Disney Pictures has released the first five minutes from the company’s upcoming return to hand-drawn animation The Princess and The Frog. The video clip features a bit of uncompleted animation. The movie is a new take on E.D. Baker’s novel The Frog Princess (which was actually the original title of the film). Thanks to /Film reader Jaynbait for the tip. Watch the video clip after the jump.

The Walt Disney Studios continues its fairy tale legacy in animation by taking moviegoers on an all-new “once upon a time” musical adventure. Set in the legendary birthplace of jazz – New Orleans, The Princess and the Frog will introduce the newest Disney princess, Tiana, a young African-American girl living amid the charming elegance and grandeur of the fabled French Quarter. From the heart of Louisiana’s mystical bayous and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgettable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn.

Featuring the voices of Anika Noni Rose (as Princess Tiana), Oprah Winfrey, Keith David, Jim Cummings, John Goodman, Jenifer Lewis, Bruno Campos, Michael-Leon Wooley, Peter Bartlett and Terrence Howard. Directed by and based on an original story written by Disney’s acclaimed filmmaking duo John Musker & Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules). Scored and music written by Oscar®-winning songwriter/composer and New Orleans native Randy Newman (Toy Story, Monsters, Inc.).

The Princess and the Frog hits theaters with a limited run in New York and LA starting on November 25th, followed by a wide release on December 11th.

Jesus christ, do we really need to make the white people rich and evil and the blacks just po' folk. I have a feeling people are going to make some dumb ass controversy about this. Also john goodmans voice sucked. Stop casting famous people and start casting voice actors! Its not that hard. Actors get hired cause they are good looking. Voice actors get hired cause they're ugly and have interesting voices. Dont argue with my opinion either. As I am right.

Did you just make some dumb ass controversy about this??
  • RJBlakeAAU
You just so blatantly contradicted yourself it is stupid. Making fun of people for stereotypes then you go and stereotype? Damn... Good job.
  • joebbb
    thank you
  • Wait, John Goodman is good looking?
  • bubblyduckey
    That's what I was thinking....
  • missfuckingworld
back of the street care for you!!!
  • Gotta love them elitist figs with the superiority complex.
    Not even a face twitch.

    0/10.

    This isn't 4chan.
  • freemachine
Correct, this isn't 4chan...but the pool's still closed.
  • Doesn't mean it he still can't troll.
  • ajg1993
I'm going to assume that was a joke. Good one.
  • joebbb
    Thank you
  • ajg1993
    That was sarcasm. Bad one.

Start casting voice actors??? Like Keith David or having a Tony winner like Anika Noni Rose? And did you just say that John Goodman is an actor for his looks? He has done several voice acting jobs before because he is known for his voice.

Oh and yes they do have to make the white people "rich and evil" especially since they are the comic relief and not the main villains. Main villain is a black witch doctor.
  • joebbb
Uggghhh, I hate how people read comments with tunnel vision. Duhh, Yes they mainly hire famous actors for voice roles, or maybe you just didnt realize jim carrey and will smith were famous. John Goodman's voice sucks. He does not have any texture in his voice what so ever. Just because he has done voice acting jobs before doesnt make him any good at it.

Even worse they make the white people rich and evil then laugh at them? Ugghhh. I hate how modern day political correctness has made it wrong to be white.
  • freemachine
"Even worse they make the white people rich and evil then laugh at them?"

OPENING CREDITS: "...In Association with ACORN..." ;P
  • nolacuse
I hope your not serious, because if you are, what the hell clip were you watching? Evil? Yea... it was real evil of that little white girl to play and laugh with the black girl. That father was basically Hitler too. Loving his daughter and being polite like that. Satan himself basically.
  • aku192
While I don't completely agree with you, your argument could've been a lot more persuasive if you didn't sound like a complete self-righteous yourself.
  • Oh no, Disney was being true to the times? BLASPHEMY! I thought this looked enjoyable.
  • Wow it is ooozing Disney in so many predictable, sleazy ways. Ew. The music, the humble messages... I guess one has to be in the mood.
  • Ashitaka
Yeah, every hand-drawn Disney is exactly the same. Same plot, tonality, message, cringe-worthy voice acting... Aladdin was by far the best, of the last 20 years or so, simply because of Robin Williams. Why can't someone from Pixar direct hand-drawn animation - that would be great
  • greycolumbus
What's it like to live in a world where Lilo & Stitch never existed?
  • Ashitaka
I've never seen Lilo and Stitch. The animation style looked cool though - lots of colored pencils.
  • Finaldo
Animation looks sweet and fluid, I don't think these 5 minutes really show how the movie will feel, but John Lasseter haven't left me down yet with a project he is producing.
  • RJBlakeAAU
It looks like the classic Disney films that people love and that is just what I was looking for from it. It looks sweet and funny. The music at the beginning was great. Count me excited for this. I knew it wasn't going to be groundbreaking, but I did want it to be a blast from the past. This for sure is it.
  • Slatters
As an animator its really cool to see the rough keys and unfinished sequences. This used to be the kind of thing you had to wait for the DVD for.
  • freemachine
I can't wait for the video game...
  • At first I LOL'd hard, but then I stopped because I realized that there will be one. :'(
  • joebbb
    you get to make gumbo
  • ModernTenshi04
I'm just going to say that I didn't really feel that Disney is being racist with any of this, at all, instead being very accurate to the time period in which this film is taking place.
  • joebbb
No way dude. It's clearly teaching kids segregation. My 9 year old neice saw this and said "Oh black people live in poor nieghborhoods and have to share their food with everyone"
  • ModernTenshi04
    Either:

    A) You're being sarcastic; or

    B) You need to explain the context and setting in which the scene is taking place to her so she'll understand what's going on.
  • Octoberist
    i hope you're kidding. pttf.
  • nolacuse
Umm, they don't have to share their food, they want to. That's the culture. I'm going to go ahead and assume you've never spent much time in New Orleans. As for segregation, that was pretty much common in those days. Not as much in New Orleans, but economically speaking it's still that way to an extent. It's really about rich vs poor and during those days a black family was much more likely to be poor than rich. Even so, they don't seem to be depicting a family that's destitute, just not wealthy.

Maybe teaching your niece some historical context is in order. If you yourself are even aware of that context.
  • dottieditto
the prince is non-white, and he seems to be from a country that's got money out the wazoo from what i've seen of him. he's completely spoiled.

and this is set int he 1920s in the south. segreation was still law. It isn't "teaching" segreation, it's reflecting the times. and if it was teaching segregation, would the main character's best friend be white? would that white character be vying for the attention of the non-white prince?

from what's been shown, I actually have to give Disney credit for once for seemingly being pretty sensitive about this. not completely, but at least they're trying.
  • greycolumbus
I just hope a certain set of crows make a guest appearance.
  • toast
wow, Its pretty sad to read these comments.. yeah a giant media conglomerate will release this film, and one that is easy to hate even, but the conglomerate did not create the film, individuals did... who are passionate about their craft and interested only in creating a film that entertains and captivates an audience. They have no other motivation. Profits from Animated films arent shared with the crew like live action films are. (at least when disney releases them) These folks don't want to offend anyone. Maybe I'm biased, I love animation.. but these artists are incredible at what they do and i'm glad these kinds of films are still being made.
  • Krauser-DMC
*applauds you* Finally, someone who didn't say something stupid.
  • simmy25
    hear hear
  • chuckbb
I dunno, Looked pretty good to me. I dug the designs, and Goodman's voice didn't really bother me. Also I'm not of the mind that Aladdin was great, I really don't care for it. Lilo and Stitch however was something new and special. I think its pretty easy to jump to a lot of the negative things some of you guys are saying here, maybe if you're going to be critical try a little harder?
  • eddymovies
Oh no...black people as main characters?? Racism!
  • IYFreak
Omgosh!! I can't wait to see this, the kid inside is just jumping around waiting to go see this.
