Trademonk has discovered that Activision has filed a trademark to protect the video game property Call Of Duty in relation to “pre-recorded movies featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure, music, theatrical performances and/or animation.”

You might recall, in May Activision Blizzard CEO refused to comment on if a Call of Duty movie was in the works, despite trade rumors that the video game publisher was shopping the idea around in Hollywood. Well the new trademark filing seems to confirm that a feature is in some form of development.

But do we really need a Call of Duty movie? And will audiences take a war movie based on a video game seriously? And will it involve Nazi Zombies? Here are some thoughts from /Film’s Brendon Connelly from a previous posting:

The game series seeks to represent American, Soviet and British perspectives, a blend which is unusual in typical war pictures and could make for an interesting underlying premise to the adaptation. The occasional level of the game that requires the player character to ‘go it alone’ might make for good gameplay but would have to be handled sensibly in the film to avoid evoking infuriating ‘John Wayne’ heroics.

Haven't studios learned that video game movies are crap? Everyone wants a film experience equal to the game experience, but honestly that will never happen because the foundation that a good game is built around (gameplay, graphics, overall presentation) cannot be applied to what makes a film good (writing, acting, effects, talent). The best we've ever gotten from a video-game movie were Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, among others, and none of them rank higher than a 6/10 or a 7/10 at best.

Compare that with all the crap hollywood releases nowadays, I wouldnt really much about vidoe-game-movies track record.

So it's a WW2 movie? Like every other WW2 movie?
  • Chris
Yes but, a WW2 movie with the complex plot of Call of Duty.
  • Toaster27
Doesn't have to be WW2. They could very well go with the Modern Warfare type of plot instead.
  • Chris
Regardless, It would still be a movie based on a game with no plot.
  • Think about this: In the late nineties Steven Speilberg was intrigued by videogames and wanted to take his own crack at the medium. He felt that Saving Private Ryan was a good base so he commissioned his Dreamworks Interactive (now EA LA) to make Medal of Honor, obviously heavily influenced by SPR. MoH became a huge success and spawned numerous sequels. One such sequel was MoH Allied Assault for the PC that EA commissioned 2015, Inc to make. 22 members of 2015 decided that they had better ideas for the game genre so they left and formed Infinity Ward, whose first game was the multiple award winning Call of Duty. Call of Duty eventually became a huge success and essentially put MoH out of business.

So basically what we have here is a potential (probably WWII) movie, based off of a game, which is the perfection of another game, which is Speilberg's videogame vision of his masterpiece Saving Private Ryan (and arguably perfection of WWII films).

    Meta.

What I take from that is that this film is redundant and unnecessary. Though sweet story.
  • Lol, I totally agree, I never meant to convey that I was happy about a CoD movie. Completely unnecessary.
  • Modern Warfare Modern Warfare Modern Warfare Modern Warfare Modern Warfare.

Honestly, that game was epic as fuck. Just remove the forgettable missions and you've got yourselves a truly fantastic action movie.

The AC gunship scenario is the best. I can play that level over and over again and not get sick of it. There's something fascinating about it...kinda like burning ants with a magnifying glass (as a child).
  • danield6
    HOOOT DAMN!!!
  • Tom
It could work, only if they get a good director and script and take the aproch Mordern Warfare 2 seems to be taking (more variety in locations, epicer feel ete).
  • Rockie
will the film contain children that sit at home all day using racial slurs on an account their parents pay for? if so i wont call that duty.

i love the game, hate the children that play it.
  • AfroVince
Try being an adult and playing it on the Wii... and organizing clan wars!
  • And it will be titled G.I. Joe 2. Honestly, the only thing (story wise) COD had going for it was that you felt a sort of justification for killing the nazis, cause they were, well, nazis. Modern Warfare, while a really fun GAME, had one of the most generic plots imaginable. Modern Warfare 2 looks to be shaping up that way too. I could only see a COD movie being a decent generic action movie at best.

If you want to watch a good video game movie, go play Uncharted or Bioshock instead.
  • Bioshock is the most overrated game ever made.
  • I object.
  • That's a funny way to spell "Halo."
  • ryz
No its not lol. COD is overated, Halo is overated.
Bioshock came more popular with the Bioshock 2 footage.
  • krackajap
Don't you mean System Shock 2 with a steampunk skin?
  • /Film!
Compare movies that haven't even started production by comparing them to bad films that have no relation on several levels!

Way to be one of a million, Dall.

Oh, and I agree. Plot? Generic. Execution? Beautiful. Same as JC's Avatar.
Dances with Wolves? Sure, unoriginal Plot.
Execution? Answer that at your will.
Un-Obsessed neckbeards (or at least, I hope anyone out of AICN) should know the right response.
  • RosanatorDA
    BOOOO!!
  • to answer your question, yes!! we do need a call of duty movie
  • Guest
MICHAEL BAY! Thats all you need to direct Call of Duty the movie!

*I said that as sarcasm, but wouldnt be surprised if he really gets affiliated with the movie someday :P
  • Isaaac
I could see COD4 working as a pretty awesome movie.
  • Mike
Modern Warfare is the closest video games have gotten to cinema. It's rare that a game - especially a military first person shooter - actually effects me emotionally, but when that nuke goes off mid-game and your US Marine player character dies, it's pretty heartbreaking.
  • ryz
Play MGS4 i had a tear at the end for that game.
  • Play Metal Gear Solid. 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Find out your first statement is wrong
    ?????
    Profit!

(Seriously, I don't even play that many videogames, and even I know that.)
  • I'll grant that the one original thing MW did story-wise was to have the main character die mid game. The only problem with this is that previously he'd only been a faceless marine that you used to shoot terrorists with. I'm not really gonna care if my character dies, especially if I don't even know WHO he is, besides his name, and especially because I know I can just switch over and play as the British guy for the rest of the game.
  • chuckbb
I definitely think you could squeeze a good story out of the Modern Warfare campaigns. Especially if the Second one is as good as I'm hearing.
  • Studios are never going to please everyone when it comes to films based on video games. What surprises me is they keep on trying.
  • Projectionist!
Call of Duty is a bit two late for making a film out of as there is plenty of war movies about, plus are people going to take it serious as war movie on it own standing?
Saving private ryan was for me the best war movie of it genra that as enter the fray in the last few year for me.
  • filmkid
video game movie always fail the fans right now i dont have faith cause i been disappointed by all these video game movies.

has anyone seen "The King of fighters - Behind the Scenes" of the live action movie video on youtube. The King of fighters movie sucks big time you guys need to check it out yourself.
  • justrobby
Would rather see a HALO movie than a COD movie..
  • gruntwars
    Couldn't agree more.
  • raymondpecoskie
I think we need an Evony Online film ... the posters would just be filled with boobs and half naked chicks whilst the film would be 90 minutes of debate around crop rotations ...
  • dvBeko
I've always found call of duty to be very cinematic, especially the modern warfare series, something good could come out if the right people are involved.
But it definetely would have to be the modern setting not WW2
  • Fir3Wolf
I think a COD movie might have some potential, especially after seeing the newest trailer released during Sunday night Football. That trailer was epic and very cinematic.
  • Xaeinovis
Just enough of these shenanigans, just give back Halo to Blomkamp and we'll have the first truly good film based off of a videogame property.

    =/
