Few fans seem to really want a Ghost Rider 2, but Columbia is making the film regardless. Recently it was reported that David Goyer has been tapped to produce and write the story. He wrote a Ghost Rider script years ago that has gone unused, and now we know for certain that Goyer’s old script will be the basis for the new movie, presumably with Nicolas Cage again in the lead role.

Goyer tells Collider, “I wrote a script about nine years ago, and Sony and the producers decided that they wanted to make that as the sequel. So…I’m coming on as a producer, and we’re basically doing a polish of my nine-year old scipt. So there’s not as much work involved.” That script was a little more hardcore than the movie we eventually saw directed by Mark Steven Johnson. “It was definitely written as a hard-R…It was a Blade-type film. Now they want it to be PG-13.” Goyer goes on to bring up Dark Knight, which pushed the boundaries of PG-13.

So what’s the script about? IGN has a review from 2000 that covers a Goyer script, but they’re reviewing a draft dated 1995, so it’s probably absurd to expect that review to have too much bearing on things. But there the direction is described as more Road Warrior than Marvel universe, and indeed the story described has Ghost Rider fighting a biker gang made up of dudes descended from demons. They want to bring the demon Zarathos to earth; Ghost Rider has to stop them. But what’s described there is as much origin story as anything else, and so unless this sequel is really more of a reboot, I would surmise that the draft being worked on now has quite a few differences.

Collider also got a brief update on the potential Magneto film, which basically boils down to: it might get made. Goyer explains that Fox is developing Magneto, Deadpool, X-Men: First Class and Wolverine 2. He’s a busy guy, and if they decide they want to make Magneto and they come to him, he’ll figure it out then. So, no real update, which is just fine.

Oh God, I've heard about this script before, I heard a whole breakdown of the events... It sounded so friggin awful! Oh this is gonna suck so hard. Well, we'll just hope it'll turn into one of those so bad it's good things... Fingers crossed...

As long as Nic Cage is Johnny Blaze, this franchise is worthless. I wish it would get a reboot, and become an adaption of Jason Aaron's run on the title. Heavens on Fire would rock on the big screen.

well, can it be any worse than Ghost Rider 1?
  • David Goyer is terrible. The Ghost Rider film franchise so far is one of the worst comic book adaptions going today, which is sad because it does have the potential to be awesome. I will give him that, he is right by saying it should be a Blade-type movie, but then again, his big contribution to the Blade franchise was Blade 3, so...

David Goyer wrote all three Blades. He only directed the third, which showed his weakness behind the camera, sure, but Blade 1 & 2 are great.

He also co-wrote the stories for Batman Begins and Dark Knight. That shows he can come up with good concepts and story. I will give him the benefit of the doubt. He needs to get someone to help him execute his ideas. If he is left to his own devices, he is all kinds of FAIL.

I think that is why people get frustrated by him.
  • I think the /filmcast said this but i have to agree David Goyer is always attached to either a really good film and really bad films. so you have to wonder is it him that brings the bad aspects? I mean look at the new tv show he's doing. Flash Forward.
  • Evan
I am liking flash forward so far...

I wish they would do a Heavy Metal-esque animated film with some hard edge to it. I think the aesthetic appeal would work beautifully with hand drawn animation.

Why can't I get what I really want: an Astonishing Xmen film written by Joss Whedon.
  • sony releases a P.O.S. PSPGO and confirms ghost rider 2 on the same day....coincidence? I THINK NOT!
  • PG-13 Ghost Rider. Yes, cause Hell is an appropriate antagonist in a PG-13 movie. What a load of bull

Another kid friendly, completely worthless Ghost Rider movie. Just what I was looking forward too. Nick Cage wasn't the only problem with the film, but he sure didn't help it either.

It almost felt like I was watching a Disney movie instead of Ghost Rider. I don't have high hopes for a second film at all.

Ghost rider should be hardcore all the way. Nic cage shouldn't be anywhere near it and goyer should direct. Let's all pretend ghost rider 1 DID NOT HAPPEN!!! Truly, truly the most awful thing I have ever seen In my life.

so lets see, we got David Goyer, Nic Cage, a nine year old script and a sequel to one of the worst movies of 2007? Smells like a recipe for success!!!
  • Take this franchise out the back and put a bullet through it. Put it out of its misery.

Last movie to bring up The Dark Knight in interviews defending their rating: Max Payne.
    Yah.

Doesn't Zarathos posess a rider and make him ghost rider? also it would be better if Cage(although i love and respect him as an actor) was a supporting role to a Danny Ketch character.
  • The most exciting part of this article based on Ghost Writer 2 is the part where they don't talk about Ghost Writer.

I don't think more needs to be said regarding whether or not I'm excited for this film or if I have much interest in it at all.
  • While Nick Cage wasn't the best choice the whole making it kid friendly is what kills films like this, for sods sake give it a 15+ rating and really develop the story.

    ENOUGH WITH THE PG12 CRAP!!!
  • Perhaps this article is referring to this draft? http://www.mypdfscripts.com/featured/sheridan-r...
