Tarantino Promises Kill Bill 3

kill-bill-1

Oh, boy. Here we go again. A year and a half ago seeing Quentin Tarantino proclaim his intention to make a film wouldn’t have meant much. But then came his appearance on a French talk show stage during Cannes ‘08, where he promised to be back a year later with Inglourious Basterds. We all laughed, knowing that he’d been talking about that movie for a decade. Then he actually followed through, and did so with a great film that has become his biggest hit. So now, when Tarantino tells an Italian talk show “the Bride will fight again,” I suppose we have to take him more seriously.

As Hunter said when reporting the Basterds announcement from May ‘08, let’s go to the tape.

In the interview clip below, the Italian host asks Tarantino about a couple of sequel possibilities. He says ‘maybe’ to a Basterds prequel, “uh, no…it’ll never happen” to a Pulp Fiction sequel (sorry, Vega Brothers fans) and then, and this is the important part, says “but you didn’t ask the third thing. Would I ever do a third…a Kill Bill, Volume 3?” The woman looks taken aback, then asks the question. Will you do Kill Bill 3? “Yes!” And the crowd goes wild.

Because he actually prompted the question, I take it a bit more seriously than I would have otherwise. But making the first two films was a grueling challenge for Uma Thurman; would she be willing to do that again? And does this mean a real live-action chapter, or one of the various anime continuations Tarantino has discussed over the last few years? At one point we’d heard that Kill Bill 3 would focus on a pair of surviving Crazy 88s, while a potential fourth film would show off the battle between the daughters of Beatrix Kiddo and Vernita Green. The latter film is the one I’d most like to see.

    I hope he doesn't

The Kill Bill universe is just as big as any other universe that Tarantino's created. I liked Kill Bill but maybe an anime related sequel would suffice than a live action one. =\
  • Exactly. I'm fine with him returning to this world, I just hope he doesn't try and shoe horn a story back into The Bride's tale. I think KB1&2 wrapped that story, there's no need to return to her...
  • GregoryV
Sounds like this will be in anime form.
  • I can't understand what's going on!!!
  • Can it really be a Kill Bill if Bill got killed already?
  • dougla_1
Not if "Bill" is a metaphor.
  • Exactly. Haha. Kill Bill's Tranny Son!
  • donivan
It was left for the third in one when Vernita Green was killed in the kitchen and her daughter saw the aftermath.Uma told her to avenge when she is ready. It will happen.I am still waiting on "The Whole Bloody Affair".
And that was a slick interview. It was fluid.Kudos to the translator. The volume level was good. I could hear Tarantino's comments to questions as well as the translator voice.Neither was "drowned "out.
  • You're joking, right?

I couldn't tell what the hell was going on in the interview. No subtitles / translation for the interviewer and the interviewee was being "drowned" out by the guy translating his response.
  • donivan
Maybe it's years of translating, understanding Italian, viewing subtitled movies, knowing how to focus, understanding conversational context or just plain paying attention, but yes it was a good.
  • What an impressive résumé you have!

Your parents must be proud! ;)

    Jesus shut up
  • donivan
Yes,it was impressive enough to pull a half ass rebuttal from you.And "Name" blah, blah blah.
  • Tekk
Yeah it was surprisingly easy to tell what was going on, I agree.

In fact, I find it quite odd mikey "couldn't tell what the hell was going on in the interview".

    Really? =\
  • I once heard/read somewhere that Vol. 3 would be about Sofie Fatale and Elle Driver teaming up to train/raise Vernita Green's daughter. Then, in Vol. 4, Green's daughter would go after B.B. and mama Kiddo. And, throughout all this, Green's daughter is apparently supposed to be friends with B.B. so she can get closer to Beatrix.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?
  • I wouldn't mind going back to the Kill Bill universe but I'd love to see what he could do with anime as his media instead of live action.

When Tarantino was doing his Q&A at the Castro Theater in San Francisco for Inglorious Basterds someone in the audience asked about him doing a Kill Bill sequel. He said he'd love to, but would want a decade to pass from when he made the last one till he made a new one. Kill Bill came out in 2003 so we're looking at 2013 as the earliest.
  • I don't think it will quite be Vernita Green's daughter's revenge yet (or, Nikki Bell was the character's name). According the internet, the actress was born in '95 and I distinctly remember QT say just after release of Vol. 1 that he wanted to use the same actress if he even considered doing her story. She's still a little young. I wish I could find that interview.

I'd love it if he visited the world of Kill Bill again...the only issue that I had is that I'd rather it be similar to a Kung Fu film rather than the Spaghetti Western the second film ended up being...I loved the Pai Mei scenes wished that whole movie was a straight up Kung Fu flick...
  • Justin
    Right on. Let's do it.
  • thelastknowngod
I loved Kill Bill and Tarantino is one of my favorite film makers. However, one of the reasons I love Tarantino is because he has some really fantastic, original ideas. Making a sequel to Kill Bill already feels like he is continuing with the current trend in Hollywood of making "safe" movies. I'd much rather see him to do something new and exciting. If anyone can do it, he can.
  • Is the video crashing for anyone else?
  • mchops
I've been waiting for this announcement for a long time.
  • Tetsuo_Man
I'd much rather see 2 surviving 88's as a short film (maybe animated), like one of those pre-movie shorts that Pixar makes. The daughters fighting each other sounds extremely stupid. Maybe Green's daughter coming back to kill Uma Thurman as a subplot, or the daughter as a henchman for a new villain or mobster boss, but the daughter just coming back to kill Uma as a film by itself just sounds a little too forced.

    More Tarantino, the better.
  • MyDarkGift
"Then he actually followed through, and did so with a great film that has become his biggest hit" - NEITHER one of those statements are true. Not even close.
  • Indie What?
There's no arguing that Basterds is his biggest hit. It was his largest opening weekend, and it's his highest grossing film in the US and worldwide. Pretty simple data.
  • Pat
I'd see the one with Vernita Green's daughter wanting her revenge on Beatrix but the surviving Crazy 88s plot is stupid. She killed so many of them so easily... how could they possibly pose a threat?
  • Felica day
It Shoudln;t be kill bill 3 since it was originally one big film.

it should be called kill the bride.
  • I FUCKING LOVE how he talks about his characters, such as the Bride.
"I want her to have her ten years of peace. I think she deserves that time, without any fighting" etc. I fucking love that shit. As if he was almost autistic, but rewarded with cinematic brilliance and true love of his creations.

Ah. I dont know. I love this man.
  • Name
I'm confused, how does Quentin Tarantino talking about characters he has created with love, and compassion, equal him being Autistic? Any writer who has created a character has to have some sort of emotional connection with it.
  • Name
Quentin looks good with a little meat on his bones.
  • Im all for this in any form. I'd like to see Nikki green come and get her vengeance on the bride.
  • goobity
I think that the daughter of Bill and Beatrix might take issue with that...
  • RosanatorDA
i really really dont want to see an anime tarantino film.
  • rockinrors
Im not a fan of the daughters story line
  • I thought Tarantino had always been planning Vol. 3, but was waiting for the actors to age.
  • Yes, I think that's why he said he wanted to wait a decade before approaching a third installment - so it could be about the two daughters. That storyline really intrigues me so I hope that's the direction he's thinking of if this actually goes ahead.
  • probot
    subtitles please.
  • quintushalls
Or as I would expect to hear: "ENGLISH, MOTHERFUCKER! DO YOU SPEAK IT?!"
  • quintushalls
Like the Animatrix and Batman Gotham Knight, this will only work as an awesome anime.
  • Frank Dogliten
I remember reading about the time the 1st movie came out an interview with him saying he would do a 3rd Kill Bill based on the little girl getting revenge on Uma for killing her Mum - but it would be released for 20 years until the girl got older.
  • saeseetom
The Kill Bill films begin with Kiddo being betrayed, and end with her finding her daughter, and with Bill dead.

Why do Part 3? Apart from the obvious reasons.
  • AT
I thought he always said that he wanted to do a kill bill 3 where it was 10 years after the original.
