VOTD: The Black Hole

Here is a short film that I missed this past May when it was part of the Cannes Short Film Corner. Philip Sansom & Olly Williams aka Diamond Dogs have shot music videos and a couple commercials. The Black Hole is a two and a half minute short film about a “sleep deprived office worker who finds a Black Hole whilst photocopying late one night Suddenly the possibilities seem endless. Will greed get the better of him?” Check out the short film embedded after the jump.

It was cute, but didn't really make too much sense if you think about it. I mean, obviously a black hole isn't going to magically get printed on a sheet of paper - but that's the setup for the story and just one of those things that you accept. My problem comes from the inconsistent rules applied to this black hole. At first, it appears to follow loose rules one might attribute to a 'traditional' black hole - the cup falls into it even though the cup should just be on the top of the copier, the man's hand disappears into it and doesn't come out the other side, etc. All reasonable enough.

But then he uses it to get into the vending machine. How the heck does that work? According to the rules JUST established by his first two trials, his hand should go into the black hole and into what appears to be the interior of the vending machine - but would not actually enter the same space. A camera inside the vending machine would capture the back of the paper with nothing coming out of it, just like the man's hand did not come out the other side of the paper in the first trial. There would be no candy in the black hole - how the heck would the candy get in there to begin with? From the vending machine on, the black hole is treated like a portal. If it was a magic portal from the beginning, the cup from the first trial would have fallen into the interior of the copy machine, and his hand in the second trial would have simply passed through the paper and appeared on the other side.

I hate to be the one to pick things apart as that normally really annoys me, but this seemed too inconsistent not to mention. Not knocking whoever made this, it's cute and original - but try to think the consistency through a little bit more next time. :)
  • I forgot I had already seen this but upon revisiting it I really enjoyed. As a lot of people have said below it reminds me of several things including 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' and 'Looney Tunes' something like that which I vaguely remember. Though maybe it might be an artificial thought.

If it weren't for that I'd say that I love the creativity and original aspect though it seems pretty typical. Didn't feel like it had much depth despite the infinite depth of the black whole - also I feel it ended too quickly and was just a bit lame (as in handicapped or limping).

That was fun. Anyone remember the portable holes from the final scene of 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'? Think they might have been an inspiration here...
  • Really imaginative! This was a good one. They should do a sequel, with comedic ideas instead.

  • Very cool! Just goes to prove that all you really need is one great idea; keep it simple, and you can make an awesome film!
