I live right off the Pacific Ocean and was surprised how far you can go on a boat and still get reception. This was especially true when most carriers were operating at frequencies below 1GHz (long radiowaves travel farther). But yeah, if you can't see land (like in Adrift 2) your pretty much S.O.L.. Makes me think of the jungle scene in Tropic Thunder when the director trashes the actors' cell phones. Other than Stiller's sat phone, those standard cells were pretty worthless.

Writers of genre scripts generally don't want to deal with cell phones, the internet, etc. Having easy communication available by digital means everywhere dismantles decades-old cliches they want to lean on.

I love that even though this was just four + minutes of very short clips from movies, meaning there must have been hundreds of movies that ended up making the cut, there are still people who can think of others.

I used to always mention the loss of cell reception concept in horror movies to my friends so I'm glad that someone did a tribute to that.

I think they were trying to stick with Cell phones, but I agree that one is classic.

They also forgot The Chaser; one of the "call-girls" gets a message failed as soon as she steps inside the creepy bathroom. It would be harder to find movies where no phone malfunctions.
