The Book of Eli Theatrical Trailer

bookfoeli

What I love about Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington is that while they are both immensely talented, they’re also quite willing to lend those talents to crowd-pleasing films, complete with scenery-chewing and martial-arts-style takedowns. The Hughes Brothers upcoming film, The Book of Eli, seems to be just one of those types of movies.

Yahoo! Movies has debuted the theatrical trailer for the film, and it sets up more clearly the conflict between Eli (Denzel’s character) and Carnegie (Oldman), a town leader who will apparently stop at nothing to get Eli’s book. I enjoyed this trailer a great deal; the palette looks great and I can never get enough Oldman in my movies. Most importantly, we get tons of Denzel badassery, huge doses of slow-motion projectile shots, and a shot that follows the perspective of a rocket after it’s been fired towards a house. As always, please feel free to leave your own thoughts in the comments.

The Book of Eli is described as a post-apocalyptic western, which tells the story of a lone man (Washington) who fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind. We’ve also learned that the barren Earth landscape is caused somehow by the sun (the trailer’s voiceover, stating that “Thirty winters ago, the war tore a hole in the sky” points more directly to the cause). Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson and Jennifer Beals co-star. The film will be out in theaters on January 10, 2010.

why dissappointing? there is no other book.

meh times infinity, nothing new or original
  • Cannot wait.

so this is Mad Max 4? ;)
  • This definitely looks like Fallout 3 the movie. Signs of fallout 3: the raiders are identical, the broken overpasses, the scattered/exploding cars, the gas mask stuff, the town with the obscure quest, a weird mutant dog like thing, same color scheme... the list goes on...

    But it looks freakin awesome.
  • man this looks freaking awesome but i hope they didn't show all the action scene. i hate when a film trailer gives away all the major action sequence of the movie.
  • very great movie, nice
  • lol
gary oldman as the bad guy with a weird accent? pretty original
  • Another post-apocalyptic movie (do I sense a trend or what?).

This seems to be on the greener side of the trend, though. I feel like I will genuinely enjoy this movie and the general quality seems pretty good.
  • I'm guardedly excited about this. Maybe just because it's apocalypse-porn, but hell, it looks cool.

What is so special about a book? Can't he make a copy or something?
  • V_Fish
I'd like to echo the love for Fallout 3 and all the badassery in this trailer. Fingers crossed this turns out to be good.

    A little off-topic:

There really is a template now that all trailers for action movies are cut: voice over, fade in from black, dramatic event that smashes to black, more voice, slow fade in from black, dialogue, etc... perhaps with slight variation.

Can anyone tell when this began and/or which film began it?
  • This film looks rad, straight up and down. Guarantee my dad says it looks "Bad Ass." when he sees the trailer.

want another title for this movie? how about:
"fanatic christian from the midwest holds on to his bible as the world ends and liberals attack him"
throw a little fallout scenery and you got yourself a "hit".
    pathetic

    @arr

    That post was pathetic.
  • tony5787
you sir are a failure. that title is much too long to even consider for a movie. even a borat sequel would have a shorter title. "Post apocalyptic book holder fights homeless people" is probably more concise
  • nemon
Flash! Cut! Screaming cat! Loud noises! Out of context clips of characters reacting to things in other scenes! Warner marketing!
Crazy that's it'll have really been about 9 years since From Hell. Good to see the Hughes Bros. Hope that "The Road" doesn't burn audiences out on post-apocalyptic stuff before Eli is out.
They like comic books, right? Have they talked to Marvel Studios?
  • Browncoat1138
i don't think THE ROAD will burn people out. How many people, besides those who post on here, and myself are actually aware of THE ROADs existence?
  • icenineiv
Umm, the millions of people who read the highly acclaimed book?
  • so is it out 1/10 or 1/15? the trailer says 1/15 so...
  • Kyle C.
Looks like a badass little action film. It's not going to be the next Dark Knight or anything but it looks like the coolest post-apocolyptic action movie since The Road Warrior. That's saying something. Of course, these genre films always come in two's with The Road being the more serious movie about life after the end of the world. Eli's world feels like what Termnator Salvation's should have been like, more barren and destroid.
  • I KNEW it was a "graphic novel by a man named JC"!!
But holy shite, Oldman's lookin' great in this. Props to him... and Washington, too.
  • Fir3Wolf
Movie does look pretty bad ass and it's nice to see Gary Oldman playing a crazy bad guy again.
  • Dangeresquetoo
I have seen every one of Denzel's films, never before have I seen a trailer for one of his movies and said to myself "Self, that looks bad-ass." until now. If he was gonna take a super hero persona this is the one!
  • We definitely need more movies with Gary Oldman, he is absolutely brilliant actor.
  • MickJ
Oldman is a thug. I love it. Looks to be not particularly deep (I predict it's going to have a poor ending) but bad ass nonetheless.
  • jamie
    his name is creasy bear
  • anthonyb
Looks really good, and so pleased Gary Oldman is back playing an unhinged nut case again.
  • ScanCase
So "FallOut" the movie? I just hope the book is more than the bible. That would be disappointing.
  • Frederik
    It's the qu'ran

    :D
  • capawesome
Man, this looks good. I hope it holds up to what I'm seeing.
  • jandreoni
Some of the scenery in the opening frames of the trailer looks straight out of Fallout 3. The broken bridges, the band of vagabonds, the color palate. Not that that's a bad thing.
  • fallout__3
dude.... thats EXACTLY what I thought. I was a little disappointed when I learned it wasnt a Fallout 3 movie... but still looks kool
  • plagueoftruth
Yeah dude. Nail on the head. Those destroyed freeways and the colors are straight out of Fallout 3. So much so that I've gotta think it's intentional.
  • thats exactly what i was gonna say, the main reason i want to see it
  • Mike
It's bringing back memories of The Postman, and that isn't a good thing... All the survivors of the "apocalypse" look like super-models and have great dental... Looks bad.
  • Charles
I can tell that the movie is gonna be pretty bad. It comes out in January people!!!
  • Buddy
    When did Cloverfield come out?
  • Name
    Cloverfield and what else?
  • Ralphy
Yea a movie being released in January really means nothing anymore sir.
  • nolacuse
You forgot to add ass to the end of bad. Easy mistake. Glad to help.
