Fantastic Fest Video Review: Paranormal Activity

paranormal-activity

At Telluride I got my first glimpse at Paranormal Activity, the $11,000 microbudget Blair Witch-style POV haunted house indie which scared audiences at Slamdance. I screened the film outside, in a park, in the darkness of night. Girls screamed, guys laughed nervously, and many people shielded their eyes with their hands. I didn’t write a review at the time because I wanted to see the film again. I wanted to see how it would play in a movie theater, and I wanted to watch the audience’s reactions. I knew that a midnight screening at during Fantastic Fest was planned, and decided to wait as the Alamo Drafthouse would surely be the perfect crowd.

This movie is well crafted, and makes a lot of a little. The film basically focuses on a couple in a house. Two other minor characters make short appearances, but for the most part this film is minimalist - two people, one house, one video camera, and a ghost/demon. Both of the characters are natural and likable, which makes this film all the more believable. And while you might not be scared out of your mind (I’ll admit I only jumped once or twice), you’ll have a lot of fun — especially if you see this with your girlfriend and a lot of friends.

After the screening, I recorded a very quick three and a half minute video blog reaction with Kent from WeAreMovieGeeks.com and Rusty from GordonandtheWhale.com. Watch that now after the jump.

I just saw this at a midnight in Seattle, and not only did it make my skin crawl but it made my friend cry by the end of the movie. This is truely one of the first terrifying movies I have seen in a very long time.

hey peter, the beard is badass man! can't wait for this film, and i'm uber fucking jealous of your career! traveling the world to see and discuss films?!? /envy!
  • I just came back from the very same Seattle screening and the movie is very effective with the scares. Some of the scares are predictable but that doesn't deter it to actually being scary...IT'S EFFING SCARY...

well, it's 80% creepy, 20% scary, but on the ride home, I keep getting goosebumps thinking about 'what-if'...

Anybody want to record themselves at night to see what's been going on?

    peter in my home town?

sorry i missed you man. cheers.

I scare really easy but I gotta see this film. Something primal inside me enjoys being scared but I think it's the relief afterwards I like, then the long dark walk home!! Ooooooo, Aaaaaaaah!

Saw the midnight showing at the Arclight in LA last nite... Fuck me! Even after all of the hype and knowing how cheaply it was made for, man...none of that matters. I got home around 2:30am and was alone and terrified. LOL Genius film! I am so excited for the rest of the world to see this. Because what makes it truly scary is the fact that IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE! My theater was going nuts!
  • Saw it in Chicago last night and all I can say is, WOW. I have been waiting for awhile and it truly did live up to the hype. The audience was fully engaged the entire time and it was just an overall awesome theater experience. I can't recommend seeing it in a packed theater enough. Great film. Hope it makes a boatload of cash.

I just got home from seeing this down in Seattle and I gotta say that it was the most fun I have ever had at the movies before....it was seriously a frickin BLAST
  • dsahawker
and I must add that I think the audience would agree with me. EVERYONE was on the edge of their seat the entire time...everyone whooping, hollering, screaming, laughing...nervously laughing....cringing with anticipation every time you see the nighttime scenes....even had a few people crying

The movie had me locked in from beginning to end, and what an end too, but I wish I had a better auidence. I had douches behind me cracking jokes during the silent tense moments and a couple of tweens next to me with piercing screams, yelling every two mins. Can't wait to see it again with a better or little crowd, awsome none the less.

I couldn't watch it because the camera was all over the place..I literally got motion sick and had to leave the film before anyone else and missed most of it.
Too bad it looked like it may have been a pretty good but different film...

I get bad motion sickness too. I can't ride rollercoasters, boats, elevators, cars rides for too long .. you name it. But, I was so interested in the movie I had to stay and see. It was SO freakin worth it. That movie was good. I had to deal with my nausea at the end of the movie, but so worth it.

I thought it was a bad 'Blair Witch' ripoff.
  • Over all the movie was good...but i did not find it that scary...but the last few parts really freak me out.

this is by far the best scary movie I have ever seen, it was made to perfection, its the type of movie thats so real and has the what if factor, 10/10 from me, I recommend this to anyone who believes.
