Stephanie Meyer, the author of Twilight, evidently writes more than just sparkly teen vampire romances. Her first ‘adult’ novel is The Host, not to be confused with the Korean monster movie released under that name in the US and other countries. The Host involves interstellar parasites that use people as hosts and remake human society into something very different. (Shades of Robert Heinlein’s The Puppet Masters there.) Now, the novel has been bought by independent producers, who have recruited Gattaca writer/director Andrew Niccol to adapt the novel and direct.

As we recently mentioned, Niccol is currently at work on The Cross. But as Variety reports, he’ll then turn to The Host, thanks in large part to Meyer’s own list of favorite films. When producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz asked Meyer what some of her favorite science fiction films are, she mentioned Niccol projects Gattaca and The Truman Show. The trade says he ’sparked’ to the job after reading the book and meeting producers and Meyer; the notion of being able to make a film in his preferred genre that could siphon off some of Twilight’s audience probably didn’t hurt, either.

Here’s the Publisher’s Weekly description of The Host:

[Benevolent] planet-hopping parasites are inserting their silvery centipede selves into human brains, curing cancer, eliminating war and turning Earth into paradise. But some people want Earth back, warts and all, especially Melanie Stryder, who refuses to surrender, even after being captured in Chicago and becoming a host for a Soul [as the parasites call themselves] called Wanderer. Melanie uses her surviving brain cells to persuade Wanderer to help search for her loved ones in the Arizona desert. When the pair find Melanie’s brother and her boyfriend in a hidden rebel cell led by her uncle, Wanderer is at first hated. Once the rebels accept Wanderer, whom they dub Wanda, Wanda’s whole perspective on humanity changes. While the straightforward narrative is short on detail about the invasion and its stunning aftermath, it shines with romantic intrigue, especially when a love triangle (or quadrangle?!) develops for Wanda/Melanie.

  • Forget interstellar parasites, Twilight's already turned our society into a very disturbing place.

That's Stephanie Meyer?! I was expecting somebody less hot....
  • The wonders of professional lighting, make-up, photography, and photoshop. (Seriously, she doesn't actually look like that. Google her name and look at all the candid photos.)

Also, this news makes me rage. Why Andrew Niccol, why!?

actually, The Host is really interesting. It is still sort of romance-novel-ish in some ways. But Meyer is really creative and the story is really well done. I think The Host proved she could actually write an adult story.

It is WAY better than twilight as far as narrative goes, IMO.
  • Although I have not read Stephanie Meyer's "The Host," I must say, from the premise alone, I can only gather that the plot feeds of many stories that have come before. One in particular that comes to mind, is Robin Cook's "Invasion," which tells the story of interstellar parasites taking control of humans, and reforming society to their purposes. Coincidence?

Wait, that's what Stephanie Meyer looks like? She's pretty hot for a chick who creates sappy vampire novels.
  • Vladimus
Wow. I'd totally love a threesome with her and J.K. Rowling.
  • I've seen this before, it's called The Thing and it was much better than anything that hack author could come up with.
  • Indie What?
This sounds nothing like The Thing.

This sounds nothing like The Thing you loser.
  • Atszczuk
I agree that she is NOT a hacking author!!! She is the best author ever and u're just jealous
  • Observations: Stephenie Meyers has pretty hair and nice lips. "The Host" is "meh" and other authors have told the story better. And Andrew Niccol has the same haircut Corey Haim did in 1991's "Fast Getaway."

Well, that book sounds just...just god awful. Really, I can't understand how people can find her a legitimate author. On another note, I can't understand how people think Diablo Cody is a legitimate screenwriter.

you are right on so many levels!!!

The book is terrible, and I don't use that term lightly or as just 'twilight bashing'. It's just terribly terribly written. Maybe it'll transfer better to screen (even if it is derivitive and cliched) but my god, awful writing.

NOOO!!!! WHY!? One of my favorite movies is Gattaca, how could he stoop this low?
  • oh the humanity
Actually, the Korean title for THE HOST translates literally as "Monster". THE HOST was chosen as the English title because that's the excuse given for the total quarantine - the monster is supposedly a "host" for unknown mutated diseases or something to that effect.
  • Oh man, I checked out Stephanie Meyer's pics on imdb, and she looks nothing like that.

They totally used a Myspace angle for her pic here.

If only she wasn't "Ill cut your dick off" crazy. And a horrible writer.
  • The story somewhat reminds me of Animorphs.

This is a really bad book, its not an 'adult' book at all and there's no science fiction except the maybe the aliens. It takes forever just to describe one thing in the book, and I mean forever, you feel like you will die reading this book. And its boring, everything ends with a nice little bow all wrapped nicely so no one will be upset in the end. Don't read it and please don't make a movie of it, it will not be pretty.

Anything! Even look like becoming a remake movie or heading to the Big screen! I like to add my Gold Mind! Awesome potential! Great opportunity for a Redd Foxx Tribute in Sanford and Son “THE MOVIE”

I am personally looking forward to this movie. I enjoyed the book very much and as always when a book I love gets a screen adaptation I start with high expectations. They don't always get satisfied of course (The Golden Compass, which I thought was quite disappointing) but it works out well sometimes (LOTR :D). Hopefully Andrew Niccol will do a good job (he does have a pretty sweet track record).

As a note to those who have not read this book and think they won't because the internet says it is terrible: please give it a chance. I am someone who does a lot of reading and I enjoyed it, so did my mother who was an English major in Uni. In fact, she recently re-read it :P Enjoy :)

Most people who rip on "Twilight" are the same exact losers who think "Transformers 2" was amazing. You can't have it both ways.

I really enjoyed The Host, and even convinced my husband, who is anti-sparkling-vampire stories, to give it a try. He's a good sci fi critic and he and I both enjoyed it. Her main flaw as a sci fi writer is an avoidance of a good fight. Young mothers have no stomach for that, I can understand that, but a good fight does make a good story. Assumably the scriptwriter will fix that "flaw" in The Host.
  • Transformers 2 sucked, and Twilight is "personal" fan fiction (i.e. fan fiction starring a teenage Stephenie Meyer as Bella). It's very badly written but I enjoyed the first couple books anyway. The second wasn't as good as the first and they got worse from there.

Teenage girls who think it's "real" literature need to read some other stuff. :\ I think that's the worst part of the Twilight craze, is the kids who honestly believe those books are well written. They aren't. You can like them, but know the difference between a good book and a bad one.

That said, I'm a fan of lots of bad movies. But I *know* they're bad. (Queen of the Damned. It's badtastic.)

You may be right, but I would say its a good book meaning its a book that keeps me interested. In fact, possessed. -.- . However, tell me hows a book badly written and hows a book written good in ur definition?

i loved the book it was amazing

For me, Gattaca is a masterpiece, but it looks like I might have to revoke that free pass I gave Andrew Niccol 12 years ago (I even slightly defend S1m0ne as a misguided folly).
