pee-wee-herman

Last night, to the surprise of many, “Pee-wee Herman” began trending on Twitter only a few hours after new account for the character launched on the social network: @peeweeherman (it has just been verified as legit). Earlier this year, Peter posted about a limited engagement at Hollywood’s The Music Box in November marking the official return of Pee-wee Herman (actor Paul Reubens) to his subversive stage roots with The Pee-Wee Herman Show. Tickets have long since sold out. But the first real test regarding relevance, nostalgia, and the bottling of curious man-child magic arrived last night. And what worse place for Pee-wee to giggle coyly and crack abstinence jokes than on The Jay Leno Show? His awkward interview with The Prolonged Chin and a few thoughts after the jump…

My first impression is that Jay Leno still looks and sounds like a Dick Tracy villain and needs to be put down. Moreover, Pee-wee is definitely a little creepier with the current age and weight on him. And unlike, say Mike Judge with the recent return of Beavis & Butt-Head, Reubens appears to have a fair amount of trouble hitting Pee-wee’s signature, zany high pitched notes. At times, it’s as if Reubens is flittering in and out of a once contagious split-personality. Most the childhood stories are confusing and seem unprepared because of this.

That said, it’s fitting that Pee-wee would return after fifteen years (…where was he? is a fun game) still wearing his red bow tie but worse for wear amidst an economic depression and multiple wars. Jay Leno’s new audience—apparently it doesn’t consist of happy children born to Tonight Show staff—sounds middling and uncomfortable, as if they want to laugh more but can’t. Probably not unlike Leno’s wife. If Reubens is indeed going ahead with Pee-wee’s Playhouse: The Movie—still listed on iMDb for a 2011 release—he’ll need to be much more convincing. Otherwise, why taint the legacy if Eminem can do the laugh better than the original genius himself?

Laughing Squid has made a video of Pee-wee sending out his first Tweet yesterday at a dotcom launch party. Reubens and his team still seem aware of how to get attention, but I wonder how modern day connectivity will impact his plan to play a Pee-wee that caters to adults as well as the more familiar, sugary version for children.

The whole thing was so wierd. The stories were odd and what was with the salad bar bit and the product placement for the choclate chip cookies? I am lucky enough to have tix to the Pee Wee Show in LA, but if it was anything like last night, it will be nothing short of a disaster.

I still cannot wrap my brain around the fact that there are people out there who find Jay Leno funny. it truly boggles the mind.

I'm sorry but what Beavis and Butt-Head spot did you watch? Butt-Head was still spot on but Mike Judge's Beavis voice is totally gone. The character sounded nothing like he used to.
  • Don't be sorry. Obviously, I watched the spot in a parallel universe. It's nice there.

Judge's Beavis wasn't 100% but the voice-work was consistent and didn't impact the jokes. Also, the voice for Beavis is much farther away from Judge's real voice, at least to my ears, when compared to Reubens' and Pee-wee (or Judge's Butt-Head). Of course, Judge's is a recording but given that Reubens is making his comeback in a live setting, this would seem a moot point.

As much as I enjoy disagreeing with you, I think your analysis is spot on. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is one of my all-time favorite comedies and I welcome the return of Pee-Wee. Having said that, the Leno appearance just wasn't funny - what was up with that salad segment? I too noticed his struggle to sound like Pee-Wee and it kind of bummed me out. Fifteen years is too long an absence.

    Pee Wee's Return??? 'bout time!

it's depressing to see him struggling with the peewee voice, but i just hope hes still getting back into his routine, his act could certainly use some tuning, and he kind of looked like his characters from 30 rock and life during wartime, but i really love peewee so im not giving up hope

he just wasnt energetic enough. he talked kinda slow and rambled on like an old man reminiscing. the zaniness wasnt really there. His head look fat crammed into that tiny suit and tight bow tie. He didnt switch up his delivery enough. Everything had the same cadence to it. When he tried to do a big pee wee voice it failed and he quickly resorted back. And then jay leno just sits there and agrees with anything the guests say. I swear he doesnt listen to them. He just hitting the key topics they talked about pre interview.

Jay Leno obviously taking his queues from Handsom Dave in Waynes World....uh huh, oh yeh, uh hum, ok, uh huh, ok, interesting, ok, uh huh......

    The interview was awful.
    I hate Jay Leno.
Other than Colbert (who isn't really a talk show), Conan is the best.

This is fairly strange to watch, because I think there are points where he totally nails it but it is so surreal. I think another thing is that his eyes look dead. The spark isn't there. The running around isn't there.

I think this could be the first appearance for his fine tuning the character again after all these years and I'd be surprised if it isn't supposed to be a born again Pee-Wee.

Who could have guessed that so many severly retarted people have access to twitter??
  • I never bought into the Pee Wee Herman thing. It's a grown man talking like an idiot. Even when I was a kid I never found the shtick funny.

WTF.......I am British, may be this is why I have no understanding of why anyone can find Pee Wee funny? For gods sake, I thought this charater was crap when i was 10, let alone now Im in my 30's. Why in an age of Will Ferrall and Adam Sandler (both of whom I have a high comedic respect for and both of whom deal in the same kind of purile comedy Pee Wee does, but they do it soo much better).
I think Mr Rubens should consign Pee Wee to where he should have spent the last 15 years, in with the other nonces in a high security prison (for all my US buddies out there a Nonce is a UK term for a petterass).
ps - Jeff W. ' Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is one of my all-time favorite comedies ', my sincerest condolences on the huge brain trauma you must have recently suffered !!
Why oh why would anyone want to see this man start acting like a head fu*!ed 10 year old again??
  • he also has a facebook account under Paul Reubens, but does not post very often.

    Thanks a lot. Good idea...

It's weird to see a character change, but ultimately change is inevitable. For example, look at The Muppets. The voice of Gonzo (one of the few Muppets to still have the same puppeteer/voice) has changed A LOT since he first popped up on The Muppet Show. With Gonzo, though, people have been able to watch him grow and change (in body, too) over the past thirty years.
Pee-Wee's change seems overnight since we haven't seen him in such a long time. I hope Pee-Wee has a safe, welcome, and successful return. His craziness is something we can all do with these days.
  • jay leno is one of the most if not most unfunny late night talk show host of all time, well now.. prime time i guess? anyways who cares about him PEEWEE FRICKIN HERMAN!!!!!
