Rob Liefeld created Deadpool in The New Mutants comic book in 1991, which eventually led to the character appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine this past summer. Now Liefeld is talking with producer Lauren Schuler-Donner about the direction the potential Deadpool film will take, and if his Twitter account is any indication, he’s pretty happy with it.

Here’s what Liefeld had to say last night and today via Twitter:

Great Deadpool movie meeting! Lauren Schuler Donner and her team are headed in the right direction!

Deadpool movie checklist- DP in costume-check! Breaking 4th wall-check! Loads of killing-double check!

Also excited to discuss possibilities of Cable in future X-films!!!

Donner Company is on top of making the Deadpool movie that fans want. They get it. He’s funny, tortured, clever, a bastard and mucho action!

That third note apparently caused some confusion, as Liefeld clarified today that Cable will not be in Deadpool, nor X-men First Class, but possibly in future X-men movies that follow from The Last Stand.

He also reiterated that Ryan Reynolds will star. Deadpool had been going full-steam ahead, with a small group of writers in contention for screenwriting duties, when Ryan Reynolds signed with Warner Bros. to play Green Lantern. That didn’t kill Deadpool, but it did introduce a delay which has evidently allowed Fox to talk to more writers and get their approach in order. Last I heard no one had been hired yet, but that was a week or more ago, so things could have changed.

Regardless, there is no script at this stage, so take all of Lefield’s statements as indicators of where the movie is likely to go. Until there is a draft in hand, that’s all we really know. But for everyone who was irritated by the character as portrayed in Wolverine, that might be enough.

(Note: I purposely cropped out all feet in the image above in honor of Liefeld’s work.)

  • lol
lol this movie is gonna be epicly bad
  • I hope you're wrong, it can't get too much worse than Last Stand and Wolverine. At least the creator is excited.
  • Reynolds was one of the few good points in that movie and he genuinely loves comics. I get the feeling that he will help push this to be a good movie (and the same can be said for The Green Lantern, even if I was pulling for Nathan Fillion to be cast)
  • Sketch
Yeah well Nic Cage genuinely loves comics as well, and you see how that went.
  • He loves comics and yet he despises video games, and, it would seem, people who play them. That's weird as there's generally a ton of crossover there.

I refuse to see anything with Ryan Reynolds in it until he can prove he's not actually a total tool. And to think, I used to like him quite a bit.
  • Bert
Minor point, but comics and videogames really aren't the same thing; there may be crossover, but it's really not as immense as often imagined, and there's no reason a person who likes one *should* like the other. I've worked in the videogame industry for some years, and for one thing - storytelling and characterisation are generally thoroughly weak and secondary, if they're even a concern. So if you read 100 Bullets, say, you're not going to be much impressed by the fuss surrounding most game stories.

Still, not looking for an argument, and a lack of interest in videogames doesn't explain why Reynolds may "despise" gamers (if he does, I have no idea). Bigger issue is whether a FILM with Reynolds is written and directed well, not whether he's a tool or not.. and plenty of obnoxious actors make good films, after all ;)
  • Name
Have you seen The Nines? That movie alone made me a RR fan fo life.
  • Enthropii
Reynolds was good as Deadpool. I'm still nt sure about him as GL though.
  • Christopher_M
I assume Cable will be in New Mutants
  • RussFischer
Yeah. That's quoted right in the article above.
  • Christopher_M
I just saw and edited my comment, thanks Russ

Stephen Lang (Avatar) looking a lot like Cable, with new still from Avatar...

  • RussFischer
Hey, no problem. Sometimes it's hard to tell when people just read the title of an article and then immediately skip down to add their two cents versus when they just miss something in the process. Wasn't trying to be snippy about it.
  • Sketch
I always thought Clint would have been a perfect Cable say maybe 10-15 years ago.
  • Dr_Gonzo
He looks like he's about to 'crash another partay'.... :D
  • jasonb26
i really wish fox didnt have this one.
  • fox will fuck it up.
  • Craigasorusrex
They'll find a way. They always do.

Don't take anything that old Robby boy is saying to heart. This is the Fox hype machine which always ends up in distraught fans banging their heads against a wall asking themselves why none of the crap said during pre-production was visible in the final product.
  • MickJ
Indeed. When has anyone ever said ANYTHING bad when promoting a film? "Oh yea, kind of sucks how they left this out ... hm that wasn't done that well either ..." Yea, never.
  • (Note: you missed Deadpool's feet at the top of the comic)

    </being a dick>
  • Was waiting for someone to point that out.
  • RussFischer
Ha. I basically hoped people would gloss over that one, because it was in a spot where cropping wasn't an option. I should have blurred them.
  • "(Note: I purposely cropped out all feet in the image above in honor of Liefeld’s work.)"

Nice touch Russ. I've seen some of the work he's done on feet and it's a good thing he's not obligated to draw them.
  • Egger_Buckland
I assume any women cast in the film will have experience with ballet.
  • And, I expect, broken backs and no eyes
  • mchops
we knew this was coming and i think it's awesome. just make it bloody.
  • Antihero
I wonder if they will use CG to get the tiny ankles and bad perspective Mr. Liefeld is so well known for :)
  • Grantlol
Rob Liefeld is a big reason comics in the early 90s were bad. I expect this movie to be equally horrendous as his art.
  • Hmmm, I'm not sure it's even possible for a movie to be as bad as his artwork.
  • Stratta
I'm guessing you haven't seen "X-Men Origins: Wolverine".
  • e_dog
I'm guessing they'll go easy on the dialogue so the actors can focus on alternating between gritting their teeth and being slackjawed.

I wouldn't consult Liefeld about renting a movie, much less making one.
  • JESUS FUCKING CHRIST SOMEONE PLEASE KILL LEIFELD RIGHT NOW BEFORE HE RUINS THIS FUCKING MOVIE!!!!
  • How is Liefeld going to ruin this movie?
  • @mbellerbrock - You obviously dont know who Liefeld is or what he has done to damage comics and make a mockery of them with everything he touches so please do us all a favor and look into MrLiefeld via the Googles and then come back and realize how potentially stupid what you said was. Its not your fault mind you cause you dont know but please just look up some of his artwork.

Actually just look up Liefeld Captain America and bask in the glory of his total and complete lack of understanding of anatomy and the human form.
  • willywonkanobi
I looked up that captain america and... wow... just... wow.

I am pretty sure my 3-year-old nephew has a better sense of proportion than that.
  • RJBlakeAAU
I still think Shane Black is the perfect guy to write a Deadpool movie.
  • starscream9289
    PLEASE DON'T SUCK!
  • This is somewhat reassuring... What's isn't somewhat reassuring: the fact that FOX is making this film. I don't think there is any doubt that they will mess this up. It's too bad really, Ryan Reynolds is going to make a great Deadpool
  • Q
I wish Liefeld would leave real characters to real writers and stick with Youngblood alongside Ratner.

If he ever tried to sign one of my comics, I'd make him pay me cover price for ruining it.
  • Q
In Liefeld world, all men have the same face, unusable feet and ankles that can't support their massive frames which can't support their massive muscles which can't support their ridiculously massive guns.
  • AfroVince
LOL @ Cropped feet. I could do some smoke effects for 'ya
  • Octoberist
Liefeld isn't even the reason why Deadpool became sucessful. DP started off as a ripoff of DC's Deathstroke (Slade Wilson), and it wasn't until other writers that came in who made what Deadpool the way he is now.
  • Actually, he WAS "the way he is now" from the start. Writer Fabian Nicienza collaborated with Liefeld to make the character-- from the start.

    ...But damn. Many haters here.
    I'm genuinely excited for this.
  • Octoberist
I'm gonna fart in your general direction!
  • Johnichi
Wasn't Liefeld also saying lots of positive things about movie Deadpool back when Wolverine was coming out? I'm still really on the fence about this movie.
  • camkevbell
I'm hoping for a good movie here. Ryan Reynolds could surprise everyone and turn in an awesome Deadpool performance. Time will tell. The thing that makes me unhappy is that the Green Lantern movie took precedence over Deadpool.
  • RJBlakeAAU
I don't think it'll surprise anyone if Reynolds turns in a great performance. The character in the comics became modeled after him eventually and he did turn in a great performance for like ... 2 or 3 scenes. What happened with Deadpool wasn't his fault.
  • camkevbell
There's actually quite a few people who are upset that Reynolds is playing Deadpool and predicting a bad performance over on the IMDB boards. I guess my post was for them. I'm really looking forward to see this movie.
  • Rob Liefeld is one of the reasons the comic industry was almost destroyed in the 90's and all of his ideas are just terrible rip-offs of other characters. He has actually been sued for this. The characters he helped create only became interesting or have rational stories after someone with talnet got a hold of them. Those pics aren't Rob Liefeld art, my monitor still works after viewing. He is a moron and his opinion on the movie means less than nothing, it actually hurts any prospect for this film.
  • the_ace_of_knaves
Last time I checked, Liefeld had bad things to say about Deadpools treatment in Wolverine. So he is on our side I think.

The ONLY way Deadpool could work in a movie of his own is if they retain the uniqueness. If they get rid of the insane humour, the cancer, the self pitying and the fourth wall breaking all you are left with is a generic loud mouth action hero. That's been done a billion times before. If they do it right it could be this generations Evil Dead 2.

If they keep the budget modest and don't try and make this out to be a mid summer blockbuster, it'll be great. Deadpool should be the same sorta movie as the Blade movies. Hard R/18 cult hits, not big budget blockbusters.
  • Merciful_budah
Why the hell are they talking to Liefeld about this? All he should have a say in is the character's look. Why does everyone seem to forget that Fabian Nicieza created the character's personality and wrote the majority of his stories from the past few years (up until the end of Cable and Deadpool).

I'm not the biggest fan of Liefeld (his reaction to the Shatterstar/Rictor relationship notwithstanding) but I'll acknowledge that the way he designed Deadpool is important to making the movie good. But why aren't they talking to Fabian and Joe Kelly about the story and personality yet? Those are the two to ask.
