Thank God this is going to be on DVD! Now I don't have to go out and by a Blu-Ray player until next year.
  • Brendan McD
I know it says the BluRay has a digital copy of the theatrical release (which is no different than the BluRay version released on July 27th.) But can I watch the theatrical cut on my BluRay player?

From what that description says, this only comes with 2 versions of the movie "The Ultimate Cut" which I can watch on my BluRay player, and the "Theatrical Cut" only on a digital copy.

Is there a way to watch either The Ultimate Cut, Director's Cut, OR Theatrical Cut on BluRay?

I want to watch the Theatrical Cut on BluRay :(
  • [A]
Yes. Download and burn them ;)
  • duder
Depends on the format, if the theatrical cut is in a format compatible with your Blu Ray player then it's all good.
  • Brendan McD
Yea except I don't want to watch dvd-quality theatrical cut on my bluray player, I want to watch bluray-quality theatrical cut on my bluray player.

I actually own the theatrical cut on DVD and the bluray director's cut, because of this fact. It looks like this new edition isn't going to do anything good for me.
  • [A]
Too bad the movie is not as good as this massive edition.
  • Josh
"Warner Bros Home Video has officially announced the expected double dip, Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut, which hits store shelves on November 3rd 2009."

It was officially announced back in July with the release of the first DVD. There is an insert in my Director's Cut DVD that had an offer for $10 off. The only real difference was the release date: the date on the insert says December 2009. The only new thing here is a few more details.
  • Brendan McD
What are you really gaining with this Ultimate Cut edition, over what the Director's cut released on BluRay?
  • D$
As far as I can tell this is the directors cut with Tales of the Black Freighter woven into the movie much like the original comics. I don't believe any new material is being presented rather just combining 2 existing DVDs into one
  • greggorybasore
I thought I'd read somewhere that the ultimate cut was supposed to include footage that Snyder had cut before he settled on the version he wanted. Or in other words stuff that was left out of the directors cut.
  • plagueoftruth
I was under the impression that at the very least, there will be the intro 'Black Freighter' with the kid and the newspaper vendor. Those characters are in the director's cut and I would guess that he filmed those scenes.

The fact is, though: just inserting 'Black Freighter' into the film wouldn't cut it. The wonderful part of that section in the comic is that the boy's comic book comments on things that are happening in the real world and vice versa. The way that chapter has the narration of Black Freighter mingle in synchronicity with events in the story is genius. It would be a Herculean task of editing to properly re-create that. If it can't be done right, I'd rather not have it at all.
  • eddymovies
Not even one new special feature? Weak.
  • presto117
it comes with the 5+ hour motion comic on blu-ray, which looks really good, and is something i enjoyed, but besides that, eh.
  • probot
    I will be getting this

Why is no one else bothered by the non-smiley face pin? WTF!?!?!
  • Brendan McD
Yea i think that's stupid too.
  • The idea is that they have combined in the Tales of the Black Freighter - which is a pirate story - hence the Jolly-Roger version of the pin.
  • B_Steelo
Because this one is gonna be a beast to sit through, son.
Might as well get as close to a warning symbol as related as possible.
  • plagueoftruth
If they wanted to go with a different symbol, they should have used the circle with the five minutes to midnight clock. That, unlike this pirate abomination, is an image that was actually in the graphic novel.
  • Patty
I am very bothered by it good sir! Yes, I'm one of those people. But seriously, it's pissing me the fuck off looking at it. I'm going to buy this fo sho, but I will always cast a look of disdain upon it.
  • Brendan McD
This is a stupid release, with no improvement over the other releases. Only adds shitty novelty to it.

These companies can shove their digital copies of movies up their fat asses.
  • Will the Blu-Ray version have the Maximum Movie Mode that the Director's cut Blu-Ray had? I rented the Director's cut on Blu-Ray, but I didn't get a chance to watch the Maximum Movie Mode. If the Ultimate Cut had this feature, then I would definitely pick this up. If not, then I'll just get the Director's cut on Blu-Ray and save like $25.
  • rant
    bastards. That is all.
  • Brendan McD
Does anybody know where to get the UK/Euro release of Watchmen on Blu Ray which included BOTH the theatrical and directors cut?
  • anthonyb
The UK/Euro release only came with the theatrical cut.
  • ardnut
Buy the US version, it's region free
  • the ultimate cut has Tales of the Black Freighter mixed with the movie right?

Oh yeah, how much do you guys think the whole thing will cost?
  • Brendan McD
Ad up top says $59.99 Suggested Retail Price for BluRay. $43.87 for the DVD edition.
  • Hey thanks, now I see where I went wrong. I wasn't looking at the images.
  • wHoKares
whats the difference between Ultimate Cut and Directors Cut???
  • Jacky
Dear lord, Zach Snyder please stop raping my favorite comics over and over again
  • Rockie
i haven't purchased a single watchmen dvd/blu. this is the cut i've been waiting for.

    the collection grows.......
  • cablebfg
same here. I have been waiting for you, my precioussssss.
  • Oh wow I remember this movie...
  • richmcleod
Like 'The Warriors' directors cut, when they added comic book bubbles over a great movie.
  • Brendan McD
Oh shit, I didn't know that wasn't in the original movie. I thought that was stupid. I guess I should watch the original cut.
  • I am really disappointed with this release. Besides and new commentary track and Black Freighter put back in, there is nothing else new to this thing. I already have the motion comic, Black Freighter with Under the Hood, and the extras are all the same that were on the Blu Ray/ DVD release. I mean what the FRAK! Warner Bros you guys really dropped the ball on this one. I was really looking forward to this thing now I am not even going to waste my money on this.
  • sanyo
Is there any info on whether you'll be able to watch just the director's cut or Tales of the Black Freighter by themselves on this release (without manually skipping scenes)? Sometimes I may just want to watch one or the other...
  • littledover
Excellent, I haven't purchased the other versions in anticipation of this one. I don't understand the hate some people have for this type of collection. What does it matter to you guys if they repackage items that are already out there and sell them as a set. If you want everything to do with the movie wouldn't you much prefer this collection to buying them separately? I know I would. Maybe I am missing somthing but this set doesn't have anything exclusive to it, right? I mean you don't have to buy this if you have bought the other releases earlier.
  • plagueoftruth
You can't win with some people. If they had new special features in this set, people would bitch and moan that now they HAVE to buy this set to see the features and the only reason WB did it was to make them double dip. Since it doesn't, people bitch and moan that it doesn't. People just like to complain.
  • chip008
    That cover art sucks
  • plagueoftruth
Agreed. It should've just been the smiley face symbol. Or the clock symbol. With this image they seem to be saying that the "definitive" Watchmen dvd should be about pirates. Nonsense.
  • chip008
    My thoughts Exactly, plague.
  • Kyle C.
This seems like a rip-off. I love the artwork, but the only new thing your getting is Tales of the Black Freighter woven back in, which Snyder himself said is not his preferred version because it throws the pace of the director's cut all out of wack. He left it out of his director's cut for a reason. The only thing I want is to hear Snyder's and Gibbon's audio commentary which I'm pissed is not on the already released version.
  • B_Steelo
damn there are a bunch of haters on this board.
  • adsfasdf
does this have "tales of the black freighter" spliced into the movie?
  • cablebfg
the powers of observation have failed you completely.

Yes, it does have the Tales of the Black Freighter woven in, as it says in the description and the first image.
  • peter
Fuck You Warners. Even though I expected this to come i still feel burned. I won't buy it because Watchmen wasn't good enough to double dip this soon.
  • Ongnissim
So... I avoided getting watchmen already for this... But: Does it have the video-commentary that the director's cut has? I really wanted to see that, and don't want to have to buy two copies of the film. This is my excuse to finally purchase the motion comic (which I've already seen, and is amazing) and the black freighter. Will there ever just be one version?
  • Name
You can always rent the directors cut on blu-ray you know and see the video commentary if you want to see it so bad.
