Columbia Pictures To Become The Masters of the Universe?

He-Man

Earlier this month Warner Bros completely dropped the development of the live action He-Man adaptation Grayskull: The Masters of the Universe, despite Justin Marks’ screenplay gaining big traction from internet buzz and Kung-Fu Panda director John Stevenson signing on to direct. Heatvision is now reporting that the project might not be completely dead after all.

Apparently Columbia Pictures / Escape Artists are in negotiations to pick up rights to the Mattel property. Stevenson and Marks are both no longer involved with the project, which will be developed from the ground up.

Marks script, which was described as “Lord of the Rings meets The Matrix meets Batman Begins”, was enough to get us excited about the project - we even listed off five reasons the movie could actually be cool. And lets face it, “cool” is not even in the first 50 words that would normally come to mind when thinking about a He-Man movie.

Now that the project is starting fresh with no writing talent officially attached, who knows what shape it might take. That said, I think I’m more excited to see how this plays out than any potential Conan reboot/remake.

The He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toy line spawned the popular animated series ran from 1983 to 1985. They later created a 1990 futuristic sci-fi cartoon, a 2002 remake, and a horrible 1987 live action film which stared Dolph Lundgren.

For those of you who don’t remember the series, Adam, the Prince of Eternia, possesses a magic sword, and when he holds it aloft and says the magic words “By the power of Grayskull… I HAVE THE POWER!” he is transformed into He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. A brave blond muscleman in a baldric and loincloth, He-Man battles against Skeletor’s repeated attempts and failures to enter Castle Grayskull.

That concept art does make it look really interesting compared to the cartoon stills I've seen and toys. Much more dark

That's not concept art. It's fan art from a Deviant Art account. I've let the owner know.

I was wondering where it came from. I just assumed concept art since no credit was given anywhere.

The artist is Stephan Sejic. He is also the artist on the wonderfully looking (and great read) Witchblade comic book from TopCow.
If you like his art you should check out an issue or trade. Just the art is well worth the price.

    your mom will like this.
  • /film should try to find out what price Columbia is paying for the rights. If it's a lot, it's likely they're also buying whatever development WB had done, including Marks' script.
  • He-Man deserves good movie. Hopefully they will invest much more in better script than such movies usually get.

Skeletor is just misunderstood. Try having no face - you're going to grow up with issues. Skeletor? His real name is Myron Schwartz. Skeletor is the name the kids taunted him with.

If it's anywhere near as awesome as that picture, then yes.

I'm simply reminded by CollegeHumor's "Superhero Fashion Emergency" which featured He-Man towards the end.
  • yes, i dont give a shit about he man, but skeletor is awesome
  • Masters of the Universe staring Dolph Lundgren and Courtney Cox is a classic sci-fi flick. Cheesy as hell but well worth at least one viewing.

This new project must have Stephen Sommers drooling...KEEP HIM AWAY!

skeletor said he would be back. one the first examples of easter eggs after the credits i can recall.

Thank God Justin Marks was out of the project! i've read his script the “Lord of the Rings meets The Matrix meets Batman Begins” and i say it sucks bigtime! because if ever it happens just imagine the film "Street Fighter: the legend of Chun Li" if you ever seen that? it will be like that! LOL

    Alexander Skarsgard.

ya, if its held up to that deviant artwork, and the LOTR+BB+MATRIx script -this could kick some serious ass. i hope the script doesn't get trashed, but i have a feeling it sadly will. hrmm...

How can any body top Frank Langella's Skeletor? Masters of the Universe is an odd movie because it is bad and the dialogue is bad but when ever Skeletor is on the screen the dialogue is unbelievable and acting is top notch. It's kinda of upsetting no one ever mentions Langell's Skeletor as a great villain which he is.

praise the lord!!!! he-man, yes!!!!!! YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!!!!!

As long as they don't use that stupid plot where a soldier named Adam comes from a different dimension and has to stop Skeletor from using a technological army to wipe out all the magic in Eternia. Skeletor wanted the magical power of Grayskull so he could take over Eternia. If they want to use that storyline, then don't attach it to an existing IP that it doesn't relate to.
  • "And lets face it, “cool” is not even in the first 50 words that would normally come to mind when thinking about a He-Man movie."

Actually, no -- cool *IS* one of the first words to come to mind when I think of a He-Man movie. This is the movie I've been waiting for, and can only pray they do it justice.

Very nice ALTernate version of He-man characters. Why modernise the original that started it all? Poeple in their 30's today will never forget the 80s cartoon. Why change it's appearance?
