Will We Soon See A Glut of Archie Comics Movies?

The news this week isn’t just slow; it is turning towards being completely irrelevant. First, there’s major casting news on the Secretariat movie, a film that screams ‘limited audience appeal’. Now there’s word that Archie Comics is now repped by CAA, which suggests that we could eventually see a bunch of film and television properties spun off from the long-running stories of Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead. Would any of you actually care about these theoretical films and shows?

Variety reports the signing, saying that CAA “will seek to create branded entertainment opportunities in film and TV in much the way that it has for toymaker Mattel.” Ironically, when Archie began to appear in comics in 1941, he was intended to appeal to movie fans. Specifically, publisher John Goldwater wanted to lure the kids who were lapping up Mickey Rooney’s Andy Hardy films. Since then Archie has been a static caricature. He drives a junky/cool car, hangs out with his friends and plays in a band. He’s caught between the girl next door (Betty) and her rich, gorgeous opposite (Veronica). The early Veronica stories had her moving to Archie’s home town of Riverdale and stealing the kid’s affections, causing Betty to fight for his attention. That would likely be the big part of any movie plot that was to develop out of this deal. Yawn.

Becase Archie has barely changed in 60 years of existence, some would call him a classic portrait of the American teenager. But even when I was a kid and beginning to read comics I never paid any attention to Archie; he already seemed laughably out of date. Now, many years after that, it seems like inertia must be the only thing that keeps the character in existence. The books are still published, so somone must read them, but I’ve always assumed the titles were kept aloat by subscriptions bought by hospitals and daycare centers.

I seem to recall a TV version of Archie maybe in the late 80s. I don't think it went past a pilot...

Are you thinking of return to reverdale? I think that was a made for tv movie where the good ol gang is all grown up and attend a reunion....could have been intended as a pilot though. They should make a 90210 esque tv series.

I could not be less excited about this possibility.

    and stay out of Riverdale!

as for the limited audience appeal of a Secretariat movie... given the success of Sea Biscuit, I don't think they're all too concerned with attracting a crowd

I think the only way to make a successful Archie movie is to make it a parody of itself. Like The Brady Bunch movie.

so, i think an 'archie' tv series would best serve this franchise. they could model the story telling after your basic teen high school show, but the style/set design/costume/etc should be (for lack of a better word) 'gimmicky', and should really make this show stand apart from others in the genre. only then could it really be something different.

they've got volumes of stories to pull from, so why not start there, but try and do something vastly different? it could actually be cool.

It could be a compilation show like Love American Style

"Would any of you actually care about these theoretical films and shows?" Uh, yeah, I think some of us would. Archie Comics has been around for 70 years and there have been many incarnations of the comic book plus tons of cartoons. I'm sorry if you're only into Twilight, but I'd be delighted to see some new Archie stuff.

This post reeks of youthful disdain bred from constant inundation with "modern" franchises. Archie is the paramour of American teen-dom. I, even as a 27 year old, would really dig seeing an Archie T.V. show. Especially if they took it to the place they took The Brady Bunch Movie or Fat Albert. Take these kids and in the pilot episode through them into modern COLLEGE. Archie, Jughead, Betty, and the rest of the Riverdale gang can get accepted to Statesota University. You can introduce Veronica as a competing interest for Archie's affections in that episode (she of course, for this franchise, is not from Riverdale), and the hilarity would ensue as the Riverdale gang went from wholesome, sweet small-towners to modern, angsty young adults. Actually this concept could work as a film too.

    I wouldn't not care....

i love archie. i'd be curious at least.
  • It'll make money if they cast it right, but there is probably no escaping the fact that the film could never meet expectations. Not a chance.
