Nicolas Winding Refn Talks Valhalla Rising and Jekyll

refn_valhalla

I’ve been saying this for years, and it is now quickly coming true. Thanks in part to his one-two punch in 2009 (Bronson and Valhalla Rising) Nicolas Winding Refn is becoming a recognizable name. Bronson is finally about to open in the US, and between that event and the Toronto premiere of Valhalla Rising, which was purchased by IFC, Refn is talking to the press about a few projects.

I’ve read some mixed reviews of Valhalla Rising, but hearing Refn describe it as “a mental science fiction movie” has me more ready to see it than ever. Talking to SciFi Wire, he says:

I always wanted to make a science fiction movie, but I had no interest in [the] technology of science fiction. I wanted to do a mental science fiction movie. I find it difficult to make one in the future now, because technology always kind of goes against mythology and the concept of science fiction. So I decided to do the 1100s instead.

Refn has also been talking about Jekyll, his potential retelling of the Jekyll/Hyde story, with Keanu Reeves starring as Jekyll. It’s not his next film (that will be the Bangkok western Only God Forgives) and he isn’t writing the script himself, which is a first in his career. Justin Haythe, the Revolutionary Road screenwriter, is tackling the script. About Reeves and Jekyll, Refn tells Cinematical:

I think Keanu is a very interesting personality. I do think that there’s a great movie within him. I think his visual look is very interesting. So I think that what makes it exciting is that he’s a non-obvious choice, but he actually adds a great sense of curiosity to the film…I do think that doing it would bring great satisfaction to him, to really pull it off. It’s probably the most difficult role any man could play.

The director also talked to SciFi Wire about his approach to Jekyll, and how to make the film work on its own terms. He wants to set the film in modern America and use as much credible science as possible, the latter being an interesting tactic. Because what credible science is there upon which to base the tale?

And what about Only God Forgives, anyway? We’ve run that it is about “a Thai police lieutenant and a gangster settling their differences in a Thai boxing match.” Refn tells Cinematical a bit more:

[It uses] the mythology of Westerns, but set in an urban environment in Bangkok nowadays. It also combines my own love of Thai food, and I collect toys, because I wanted to be a toy collector when I was younger, and Thailand and Bangkok have great toy stores. So this is three stones in one knock.

    Bronson is SO GOOD.

There's going to be confusion about Clive Cussler's "Valhalla Rising" novel based on the Dirk Pitt character (portrayed by Matthew McConaughey in 2005's "Sahara") and this movie with the same title. I'm surprised there's no lawsuit yet.

You know, I'm a little ticked off at you guys for constantly giving praise to this guy. I went to VALHALLA RISING at TIFF thinking it was going to be an awesome movie. That was one of the most boring POS I've ever seen. I knew not to expect a 300-esque action film, but this was just a relentless slog of nothingness punctuated by violence whose sole purpose was to jolt the audience out of it's sleep. At the end of the film, I literally said out loud "Wait, that's IT?" I ended up seeing PARNASSUS and BAD LIEUTENANT afterwards just so that I iddn't end the festival on such a horrible note.

Agreed. I didn't much like Bronson either. As much as I like Tom Hardy as an actor Bronson is a strange film with a strange look and feel that doesn't seem to have a point and doesn't quite come together coherently.
  • Sometimes u don't have to Be "eye" raped to be Entertained...

With Non-Stop Action or CeaseLESS Violence...

Though I do get when "something" may be consider'd Boring or whatnot...
  • I had a hard time watching Benjamin Button the first time...

Which is why I never go see a movie I'm not Prepared Personally to go see...

At least, in the theaters...Whenever I want to "experiment" and Go outside my Comfort Zone, I wait for the flick to come out on DVD...and then Rent it for a BUCK...

    So if I don't LIKE it, I won't feeL like a DOLT...

anyhow, yeahs, Sometimes, a CerebraL Flick gets the JOB done...

and I'm SICK of OVERRATED flicks getting PRaiSED...

SO what if THAT's the Consensus...I rebeL & Reject that notion that EVERYONE has to agree that Something is GOOD, and if u don't Join the FLOCK, then you my friend have bad "taste" line of thinking...

I hate that Kinda Shizzz...GROUP THINK can KISS my YELLOW @SS...

Yeups, so if you know you don't like "slow" boring @SS MentaL Sci~Fi Flicks, avoid it NEXT time...

Just don't BITCH & MOan about how the movie SUX or doesn't speak to you...we get it, you don't Like this OUevre of flicks...

SO go see something else then?

    Just like u did...Get OVER it...It's a F***inG MOVEE

    Remember?

Sheesh, Almighty...Some people just act like it's the END of the F***ing World cuz their PRIVILEGED SORRY @SS didn't appreciate something...

    Well, I don't BITCH about stuff I don't like...I just "MOVE ON"...

U should try that sometime, and be LESS of a BITCH...kay?

Seriously, guys like you and those "Talkbackers" On AICN...Just PURE Rubbish...
  • Lastly, I just want to add this:

Cuz TOO OFten I come across @holes who act like it's the MOVIES fault they didn't LIKE it...

Well, buddee, let me knowledge you with a bit of Wisdom:

What you LIKE or DISLIKE says MORE about your individuaL tastes than it DOES about the OVERALL quality of the FILM...

Than it does about ANYTHING...or even the OBJECT of ur LIKE or DISLIKE...

So...Just say you don't fu*king Like the Flick, we GET it!?

Honestly, we understand, if you discuss your ideas//feelings//thoughts without resorting to bitching & moaning like a Six year old, u might even ADD some Relevance & thought to ur personal Feelings, rather than "oh this moovee SUX hari baLLS...and I feeL GYPPED, boo hoo, fu*king RAH RAH!!"

Seriously, grow the F**K UP, and learn to just be MATURE about things?

    Seriously...
  • Then Speak For YourSeLF, Just cause you don't enjoy something doesn't mean someone else won't feeL that way...

I do get that not everyone feeLs the same way...

Just don't act like a Snot who gets "outraged" cuz he feeLS personally "GYPPED" or whatever...

    CUz everyone feeLS differently

Trust me, I'm usually pretty conservative about my distaste for a film. I had seen a couple of other films at TIFF that I didn't like at all. But rather than go "This sucks", I take the time to go into detail as to why the film didn't do it for me. The reason I'm so vocal about my dislike for VALHALLA RISING is because for months on the Slash Filmcast, I had been hearing non-stop praise about the Pusher trilogy, which lead me to believe that Winding Refn was a fantastic filmmaker. So I can't help but feel gypped for having my first exposure to someone the podcast has been glorifying be so underwhelming. To use an example, it would be like everyone singing the praises of Fincher, and then seeing ALIEN 3 as their first Fincher movie and going "This is it?"
  • The Pusher trilogy is (if you exclude the 3rd cause that one is like Godfather III) some of the best moviemaking to come out of Denmark, so some credit is due. None here have watched Valhalla Rising(they are just saying they want to see it), which is understandable because they are fans of the Pusher trilogy. So if it turns out shit it's their fault?
  • luke_a
I have not seen the Pusher trilogy, so I can't say anything about that movie. And if I end up not liking them, I will not blame the quality of the film on the Slash filmcast hosts. What I will blame them for is building my expectations up to such a high level that with that heightened expectation the film could not pass the bar that they've set so high.

It's like if a friend of yours tells you about a band that is so unbelievably awesome that their music will change your life. And when you do listen to it, it turns out that the music isn't even mildly interesting. If you had listened to the band on your own, you'd have an indifferent response. But because of that heightened expectation, you end up liking the band even less and are pissed at your friend because of that.

The point is, my expectations about the Pusher trilogy is now tainted because of such a bad reaction I had to VALHALLA RISING. And Dave, Devindra and Adam's praising of the movies is not doing any favors.

As for Danish films, MAN BITES DOG set the bar very high for me.

Just watch the first 10 minutes of valhalla rising. Nothing happens after that.

No doubt Refn is a talented filmmaker, but I can't imagine a modern day Keanu Reeves-starring Jekyll film being better than the recent BBC miniseries "Jekyll" starring James Nesbitt. That was fantastic.
  • Nice...I like this Guy, he has "Raisons" for the things that he does...

And MentaL Sci~Fi is WHAT I've been Dying to do MySELF...
  • Dammit, Refn stole Loc Pham's idea to do mental sci fi!
  • I love Refn, but Valhalla Rising was boring. He used the same "sci fi" line on us at the TIFF screening, but there was nothing Sci Fi about it. There IS a lot to think about, and it is interesting, but MAN is it ever slow.
