Cool Stuff: Unused Moon Concept Posters

Moon

I was never really a fan of the official poster for Duncan Jones‘ sci-fi indie Moon. I actually think Sony missed a big opportunity to sell the movie based on cool retro sci-fi imagery or the marketable face and name of Sam Rockwell, instead deciding to go with a trippy psychedelic circle.

Quiet Earth (via: FirstShowing) came across a bunch of the unused concept posters that were created for the film, most of which are pretty awesome. After the jump you can see some of the unused concepts. Which one do you like best?

First and second are truly great.
Pity the art of movie posters is disapearing nowadays.
  • quintushalls
The first one gives too much info away. You spend the first half of the picture trying to figure out if it is an alien or he is insane, and that poster helps you know almost immediately what he is.

I love them, though! This film really deserves a mainstream audience.
  • peter
I disagree, it's just a guy sitting there, it lets you know nothing really. I don't think anyone is going to be sitting in the movie and think back to the poster and say OH I GET IT NOW. Also, I don't think there is any questioning in the movie, by the 30 minute mark you know exactly what's going on (or as much as the character does)
  • jickface
The fourth one is extremely similar to the poster for Solaris (the 2002 George Clooney version)
  • Ron
Question - which poster would have made the movie not suck?
  • bonchampion
    this is a joke, right?
  • I guess the questions to ask Ron is, what is your favorite movie? And did you see "Moon" in a theater?
  • Ron
I saw it in a theater, yes. The next day I saw Hurt Locker in the same cinema, and that movie was fantastic. I went to see Moon based on the hype from this site, and have not been more disappointed in recent times. Tomayto, tomaato
  • peter
    Sorry, your opinion is wrong.
  • Opinions are not wrong. I loved the movie, but it's just my opinion. Like Ron said "Tomayto, tomaato"
  • ed
no, ron's opinion is definitely wrong.
  • can somebody give me any info on how i can see this movie?!?
  • I don't think it's in theatres anymore, you'll have to wait for the DVD.
  • It's still playing in Los Angeles, at the Beverly theather.
  • Name
can we get those in high quality???
  • I would buy the 1st or 2nd one. Especially if it was somehow a nice, screen-printed version.
  • I like the first and last one, although the first one is too much like the starchild from 2001, and the last one needs different facial expressions. It looks pretty heavily Photoshopped, I'm sure they would've taken new photos to make it better.
  • Davide
Agreed. The first image is the most striking for me, but it's very evocative of the starchild, and what kind of arrogance would induce you to draw comparisons between your little space movie and 2001?
  • Rob
I did like the main style, landscape-format Moon poster, but I personally prefer the image on the top left one here. The font is poor tho, glad they rejected that. I imagine one reason that image was passed over would be if someone felt it was a little too referential of the embryo imagery used on many of the 2001 posters.

Wow, the first one is awesome. Can we get these in HQ!? Or, anyone know where I can find a Moon poster for sale? I've scoured the internet for one, can't find it anywhere!
  • I personally prefer the main one that was actually used. It was a throwback poster that really defined Moon's use of old-school camera techniques and miniatures, both of which are among its greatest strengths.
  • ajkartman
I have to say the first one is the best both in concept and as what it stands for. Although it may give away too much of the character, I also see it as an homage to 2001 with the star-child art.

SPOILER (DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE): I've been looking for SOMEONE to talk to about this... So, at the VERY beginning of the movie in the opening credits, when Sam Rockwell's name comes up, there is a subtle *second*, duplicate version of his name in the background. I was the only one in my group who noticed it, and I began thinking "twins?" "clones?" "two sam rockwells?" I'm not saying I callllled it, but I'm just wondering if anyone else caught this. Some pretty badass foreshadowing by Duncan if you ask me.
  • negropolitan
where can i buy these posters???
  • RJBlakeAAU
The first is definitely my pick. It would have drawn even closer comparisons with 2001, which could have been a good or bad thing because they are at the same time very similiar and ifinitely different
  • tricky808
Personally I'd hang up the 2nd one on my wall. But the last one "close-up" i believe is the most marketable. However 2nd is the closest to the vibe of the film. Which is Fantastic! Duncan Jones is my new big hopeful. "Mute" is already sounding great!
  • dagreenman18
Top right, hands down. Any chance of them selling it as a print?
  • plagueoftruth
    I'm with you 100%
  • Those are some sick posters. I especially like the top left with the two bottom as runner ups.
  • Topbanana
Take arguing about films to IMDB please. The second poster is genius - like Space 1999 or something...! as a 70's /80's kid space was all about white sterile interiors and big wheeled buggies, at least, until Alien came a long....
