johnny depp pirates of the caribbean

As you’ve probably heard by now, Dick Cook has been fired OR stepped down as Disney Chairman after working for the company for 38 years. The effects of this shocking move will be felt in the weeks to come, but we’re starting to hear of some of the possible aftershocks.

For example, one of the reasons DreamWorks signed with Disney was because of Steven Speilberg’s relationship with Cook. “Steven worships Dick,” an insider told Nikki Finke, and now that he is no longer part of the company, Spielberg is “devastated.”

But the more immediate aftershock is the now uncertain future of the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Johnny Depp told to Los Angeles Times that he is both “shocked and very sad” to hear the news, which he learned directly from Cook in a personal phone call. Depp credits Cook with his working relationship with Walt Disney, saying that he would have never joined Pirates without Cook’s constant wooing.

“He’s instantly trustworthy. And you generally don’t meet people at the studios you trust. He’s a rare beast,” Depp told the LA Times. “When things went a little sideways on the first ‘Pirates’ movie and others at the studio were less than enthusiastic about my interpretation of the character, Dick was there from the first moment. He trusted me.”

And now that Cook is gone, how will this effect Depp’s future with the mouse house?

“There’s a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment,” Depp said. “It was all born in that office.”

When asked about the announced fourth Pirates film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Depp said while he has a potential deal in place, his ultimate involvement will now depend on “how good the script is” (which is his possible out), and that his passion for the project has been “severely dampened” by the news of Cook’s departure from the studio.

Lol, I was wondering how long this was up and if I could get in with that comment first, turns out I was dead wrong. I hope this ruins PotC4, it should have ended after 1.

    LOL that's an epic quote
  • lol

    steven worships dick.

    poor depp; stupid disney.

I laughed at Steven worships Dick. I must be 11 year old.
  • nagroc
yeah, i felt pretty silly chuckling at that. but that shit's funny to see in print.
  • Yup, just like everyone else I too sniggered at the quote:

    “Steven worships Dick,”

    Nice to know.
  • The Pwny Express
Wow, I came here to see if anyone commented on "Steven worships dick" and I was not disappointed.

This is what I came in here to say, haha.
  • I sure hope it will squander the fourth installment of the series in some way or fashion. The first POTC film was awesome, but by the third one it was wearing thin. We definitely do NOT need a third one. I hope Depp is scared like shit to work with the company since Cook left.

I understand why he's worried, but I do hope the franchise lives on for at least one more film. It's one of the better movie series of the 2000s and I think four films would be a good number to end it on. If Disney can learn to not wear it out past four films, it would be great.

Terrible Cook's been given the boot. I would be worried if I were Johnny, too.
  • fanboy_d
t'would seem 'steven worships dick' is the new 'disney want to go after boys more aggressively'
  • “Steven worships Dick." What an unfortunate quote...
  • It's really unfortunate that such a juvenile quote is going to destroy all intelligent thought in this comment thread.

    But I'll be damned if I didn't laugh. A lot. Man, I'm 7.

I think it was pretty clear after Hook, A.I., and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that Steven worshiped dick. And after Pirates: At World's End, I think Dick worshiped dick, as well.

One would think that the Disney CEO would have put up some quiet feelers around the industry to see what the fallout would be (assuming Cook was fired), because it seems like losing Depp might mean losing Pirates 4 and might mean losing hundreds of millions, plus his seemingly positive relationships with a number of industry heavy hitters. But maybe it was calculated. Beyond Pirates, Disney's live-action have been pretty horrendous (quality and moneywise... at least the last Pirates made money, though were wildly expensive and difficult to make), so who knows.

As long as Depp and Rush are the focus, I'm fine. Tone down the "trying to be epic" storylines, tone down the effects. And tell a more focused and fine tuned story about the only two characters anyone actually liked anyway.
  • As chuckle-inducing as this article can be at a moment or two, I have to agree with Cook's close contacts.
What good did this do? At all? Surely they wouldn't FIRE him, with them concious of what he's done for the company these last years!
    Honestly, this is ridiculous.

We need an official press statement about this action on Disney's part. Rumor Mill is going too fast right now about what happened.
  • Damn. This is like an earthquake. I was looking forward to PoTC4, but not if there's no JD as Cap'n Jack Sparrow. Cook is a good man.
  • David1225
Iger is a no talent, greedy jerk. Of course, he should have fired himself, but why not pin it on the guy whose tenure at the company just happens to overlap with Iger's painfully inadequate leadership?
  • Slatters
Considering what a shameless money machine the franchise is, I'm fairly certain its in no danger.
  • Name
Because it would just be SO awful not to get another film out of this franchise wouldn't it?
  • Well, considering Depp is major fan-bait, critic-bait and overall viewer-bait, it probably would-- for the company, of course. Loss of resources, time, and probably a box-office bomb.

Of course, that'd be great for us. It'd give us something to bitch about.
And who on the INTERNET doesn't love that? We're still going on with Batman and Robin!
  • existenz
The script would have to be pretty bad to Depp to pass on it. Pirates 2 and 3 were downright HORRIBLE.
  • eddymovies
Neither of those had a script when Depp signed on. Heck, they didn't have one when production started.
  • existenz
On another note, has anyone seen "Jennifer's Body"? I'm hearing that it's bombing at the box office, which may spare us too much more Diablo Cody.
  • Aaron
I guess we can think Disney for canning Dick if it means the Pirates series will come to an end. The first two films were really good; the third one...not so much. And even if the third film was decent, do we really need four of the things?
  • Weyland_Yutani
i'm sorry but films like Wolverine, Transformers 2, and Indiana Jones 4 make Pirates 2 and 3 look like Oscar contenders. Maybe not great films, but keep things in perspective.
  • greggorybasore
Of those examples I'd much rather see Wolverine or Indy 4 again instead of sitting through either one of the sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • Jawmuncher
Steven Worships Dick, is probably the funniest thing I have read all day.
Nice to see im not the only one who thought so.
  • drdang
I KNEW I wasnt the only one immature enough!
    “Steven worships Dick”
  • Someone please make shirt that says "Steven worships Dick."
  • IVIXer
Lets not get ahead our ourselves here. Since when did an actor ever commit to a project based on who the studio head is? This is all about $. Depp, and more than likely his agent, can now use this incident as an excuse to go back to Disney and ask for more money to lock him up for Pirates 4. It's as simple as that.
  • thorofthunder
I couldn't stop laughing when I came across this gem:

    "Stephen worships Dick."

    Great quote. Epic, even.
  • mont.ee
i think POTC 4 is a bad idea anyway, leave it at a trilogy man! the third one wasnt even that good and your trying to develop a number four?!
thats always been disneys problem, never know when to stop!
