Obi Wan with Hood

As if it wasn’t already hard enough out there for Jedis (what with having to contend with the universe’s most evil forces imaginable), now they’ve got to worry about getting harassed by supermarket employees. According to the Guardian (via Reddit) 23-year old Daniel Jones, who founded the Church of Jediism in England, was trying to buy something for lunch from a Tesco Supermarket in Wales when he was told to either remove his hood or leave the premises. Hit the jump for some more details and for Tesco’s amazing response.

Let’s back up for a minute here. A lot of you are probably thinking, “There’s a Church of Jediism?” Indeed there is! According to their website, the church was founded in 2007 by several Star Wars enthusiasts. You’ll also find links on the site to engage in Jedi training courses, but most of these links are broken or incomplete. According to Time in an interview piece last year, the UK government recognizes Jedi Knights as an official religion, after 400,000 people listed it on their 2001 census forms. Jones remarked at the time, “If the government says to us ‘You can’t do that because you’re not a true religion,” we can say ‘Yes we are’ because there’s more Jedi than Scientologists in Britain.” I’m not sure if Scientology is the religion you want to evoke in order to prove your own legitimacy, but then I don’t run my own church, so what do I know?

That all brings us to this current hooded fiasco. Jones recalled, “It states in our Jedi doctrination that I can wear headwear…You have a choice of wearing headwear in your home or at work but you have to wear a cover for your head when you are in public.” But when Tesco employees spotted a hooded Jones weaving through the aisles, they were understandably concerned. Did the ends, however, justify the means? Jones describes the way in which his civil liberties were ruthlessly violated:

They said: ‘Take it off’, and I said: ‘No, its part of my religion. It’s part of my religious right.’ I gave them a Jedi church business card…They weren’t listening to me and were rude. They had three people around me. It was intimidating.

Tesco responded, in perhaps the most awesome way imaginable:

He hasn’t been banned. Jedis are very welcome to shop in our stores although we would ask them to remove their hoods…Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Luke Skywalker all appeared hoodless without ever going over to the Dark Side and we are only aware of the Emperor as one who never removed his hood…If Jedi walk around our stores with their hoods on, they’ll miss lots of special offers.

Oh SNAP, they went there. Well-played Tesco. Well-played. Jones has made an official complaint against the store and is considering a boycott.

Good...good. Let the hate flow through you.

For anyone wanting context, wearing a hoodie is regarded by the British public as a sign that you're a hooligan or part of a gang, and in any case up to suspicious activities. Many stores don't allow people in with hoodies, while others may ask that they lower their hood, I assume in part so cameras can see their face should they commit a crime.

A good example is basically every kid in Hot Fuzz wearing a hoodie.
  • Ahh, interesting. Thanks for the info.
  • Well, I'd imagine they weren't actually wearing hoodies but rather hooded cloaks. I mean, it'd be a bit weird for a Jedi to be walking around in something they just bought from JJB Sports. :P

Tesco just owned the Jedi religon

    Tesco FTW.
  • Ouch. Considering Tesco are inherently evil and piss over other business's in their community destroying Walmart aspirations, they should be FTL. The fact that one of their PR bods has an understanding of sarcasm doesn't make them cool.
  • Rusty Wallace
    lol u mad
  • Inherently evil, eh? Hyperbole much?
  • Meh.. nothing wrong with a bit of hyperbole every now and then :P Otherwise who would listen?
  • Tesco_FTW
...hhmmm, in this case I'd say an understanding of sarcasm actually does make them cool.

Church of Jediism is a freaking fanboy cult not a religion. anyway he had to take off the Hood cause in England we have a high crime rate based on people wearing Hoodies. when i go to stores with my hoodie i always take it off.

this Daniel Jones should of take his hoodie off instead of trying to say its part of his religion. i understand if its a islamic person wearing a Head Scarves cause its part of there religion, but this Jediism is a freaking joke.

    Well Done Tesco

"Church of Jediism is a freaking fanboy cult not a religion."

It's a fanboy cult, eh? Sounds like religion to me.

    @Name

my girl wont be happy LMAO
  • Oddzball
Jeez dude! RELIGIONS **ARE** Cults that merely have lasted a couple of generations and gotten influence in the communities they reside in. People who follow a fictitious story's philosophy are lesser than people who follow a guy who swears an Angel came out of heaven and gave him a book no one but himself could read? Or who deided the world would end in 1914 because the first foundation stone uncovered and measured to have a width just short of 25 inches?

    The Church of Tescoism WINS

this guy is a rubbish jedi, he could of used the jedi mind trick to get the tesco staff to leave him alone LMAO
  • Glad I read your post, I was about to say the same thing.
  • Well played, Tesco.
  • NotaViking
Great story, however given that they're in Wales, they didn't set their church up in England. Wales is part of the UK, not part of England. You can say that they founded their church in Wales or Britain or the UK, but not in England.
  • Dr_Gonzo
A real Jedi would have handed over the Jedi church business card and convinced them it was a twenty pound note.
  • greggorybasore
No, because greed and deception are not part of the Jedi way.
  • Very cool response from Tesco. But can we acknowledge that they one of the most evil forces in the UK, spreading like wildfire everywhere and abusing both farmers AND animals in the name of profit. Truly darkside.

And the Jedi religion story was always cute but didn't seem to be true fans to me. Why? Well you can't simply CALL yourself a Jedi, you have to have the opportunity and ability to be trained from a very young age. It's a like saying I'm a Ninja religion, it's stupid.

And just when I thought my day was going to be drab and boring I read something like this and I know that the whole weekend will be alright.
  • Tesco: 1
    Nerdy dude: 0
  • RJBlakeAAU
I had no idea what Tesco was before this happened, but now they could be the greatest chain to ever exist.

Even if the rest of my day is shit, this shall bring a smile to my face.
  • zoey
    !!!!!!hahahahahaha
pwnd most awesome stubborn jedi were.
  • nerd/ If the British Council is enforcing strict "hoods in public" rules then they are headed towards a schism. Name me one instance in the canon where hoods were employed when either a Jedi or Sith weren't skulking with their hood up.

Tesco knows their canon better. /nerd
  • Duh
    Tesco = The Empire.

They seem to have tempted Dave to the Dark Side...
  • graygrrrl
This is the funniest thing I've ever read! A tear came to my eye. Way to go Tesco!
  • I'm happy no younglings were hurt during this confrontation.
  • The Only Man Who Can
Is there a Church of Sith?
  • johnbo01
He already referenced the Church of Scientology
  • Haha, fantastic comment! =D
  • johnbo01
Since when the hell is a Jedi intimidated by "three dudes around me"?"

That being said Tesco has one hell of a PR department.
  • Ashitaka
You can't win, Tesco. If you strike him down, he shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.
  • Only in Wales.
    (Eff yeah.)
  • I don't care how many members it has or what their doctrine is, no way I'm taking a religion founded by a 23-year-old seriously.
  • Jesus was only 30 when he did most of his "renowned" work..... Age has nothing to do with it.
  • tricky808
May the force be with you Tesco...Amen.
  • LiamJM
Ok a couple of things... firstly Tesco rightly owned that dude. Secondly, if you are particularly knowledgeable of the Star Wars universe and history you should know that the Jedi teaching is extremely flawed. It’s one of the main reasons why there is a constant loop of sith uprising and war. Jedi go bad because instead of gradually experiencing and overcoming emotions from a young age they live sheltered lives, cut off from the rest of the universe. So once older and thrown into complicated scenarios they are emotionally underdeveloped and are easily tempted and overwhelmed. It’s in my opinion the most fascinating part of the Star Wars lore, especially considering the comparison with other religions and their perceived flaws.
  • The name "Church of the Jedi" bugs me. Shouldn't it be "Church of the Force"?
  • LiamJM
The "force" a supposed energy not a belief system. The Jedi have a belief system based on the force, the sith have another. "Church of the Force" could represent any church based on the force not just the Jedi.
  • starscream9289
Those Jedi will be back, and in greater numbers.
  • Fir3Wolf
That was great. I know I personally wouldn't want to miss any of the special offers Tesco has going on.
  • Dave Chen,

The plural of "Jedi" is "Jedi." Loser.

(Please note the irony of this comment.)
  • spm9000
guess he hasn't picked up on the jedi mind-trick yet
  • bluelouboyle
Why is Tesco evil?? If people don't like them then they shouldn't shop in them. The company is NOT an all powerful empire - If people didn't shop in a particular Tesco store then that store WOULD CLOSE. So, ultimately, the consumer has the power.

    GROW UP YOU PEOPLE.
