harry-brown

Clint Eastwood take note: This is what your old-man vigilante film should have looked like. The first trailer for Harry Brown hit the web a couple days ago, and it’s instantly landed the film on my must watch list. The feature directorial effort from Daniel Barber, the film concerns Michael Caine’s retired ex-marine character who goes all Death Wish on some local thugs after they kill his friend. Emily Mortimer stars as the token cop who tries to take him down for vigilantism.

I don’t suspect that this film will surprise us much plot-wise—after all it’s pretty much the same vigilante story that we’ve seen repeated ad nauseam—but it’s nice to see Caine kicking ass once again, and I dig the look of the film from the bit we see in the trailer. I haven’t seen Barber’s short film, an adaptation of the Elmore Leonard short, The Tonto Woman—but given that it was nominated for an Oscar in 2008, I assume it wasn’t terrible.

With the success of Gran Torino and Taken, I’m surprised we haven’t seen more films featuring older actors kicking ass recently. At 76, Caine is more noticeably aged than Eastwood (who’s actually three years older), but at least his classic British gravitas allows him to strike fear in the heart of youngins without resorting to excessive growling.

Check out the trailer for the film below:

Harry Brown is set for a UK release on November 13, 2009. There’s no word yet about a US release.

Michael Caine *is* the man! Looking forward to seeing it.

Sounds cool, but do you really have to use this as an excuse to trash Gran Torino? I know the /Filmcast hated the movie, but many people truly enjoyed the film. You guys might feel like you're living in a "crazy world" where the insane people like a film that you find sub par, but that doesn't mean that's the way it is. I don't see why the post had to start with: Clint Eastwood take notice... This post struck me as more of an anti-Gran Torino article than it did a pro-Harry Brown article.
  • RyanCarell
Considering there are only two shots at Gran Torino (a film I DID enjoy) and the rest of the post is about Harry Brown, I think you might be acting a little melodramatic here. This is /Film, and the posts will reflect the opinions of the /Film writers. That's why this is a blog, not a newspaper.

Personally I'm glad we have a site here that isn't afraid to be perfectly blunt about it's opinions, because despite those opinions they keep this a fairly professional outlet where the opinion doesn't stop them from at the least reporting on news even if they think it's about something they personally don't enjoy.

Anyway, I've gotten off the main topic. I think that Harry Brown definitely looks absurdly cliché and unoriginal, but Caine seems to doing something wonderful, and the visual approach is interesting despite being a little over-stylized. I'm down to see this.

My point wasn't that /Film should turn into a neutral site. I agree that one of the site's strong points is the fact that the writer's don't hide their opinions. But you've got to realize that when opinions are being thrown around people are going to disagree with them on the comment section.

The Gran Torino conversation has come up on the /Filmcast multiple times and when I saw it crop up on the site I felt the need to respond. I don't think I'm being melodramatic since it has been mentioned by Devindra on the show plenty of times and he may only mention Gran Torino twice in this article, but this article is only three paragraphs long and the shots at Clint and the film are pretty noticeable.

Don't get me wrong, though. I like /Film as much as the next moviegoer. The Gran Torino thing is just something I disagreed with.

Completely agree, keep the opinions but don't turn news into a rant fest about how much you hate something, leave that to the reviews. There's a difference between presenting a piece of news and expressing your own opinions and just flat out using a news article as a medium to express your dislike for something. Yeah, Devindra was reporting on Harry Brown, but he used the post as a medium to trash Gran Torino which he apparently likes to do, I started reading /film after Gran Torino came out (great movie by the way, don't get all the complaints), so I haven't seen them.
  • RyanCarell
Fair enough. I definitely see where you're coming from.
  • lol
seriously, especially considering eastwood is the definition of a badass. pretty stupid thing to write
  • Square
Gran Torino was a horrible movie with terrible, awkward and unprofessional actors struggling with terribly unnatural dialogue. Refer to scene on street corner with Ahney and the white kid trying to speak ebonics. I rest my case.
  • simon2it
Whoa whoa whoa! Proves that Michael Caine still got it? When did anybody ever doubt that Caine had it? When did he lose it? IT has always been in Michael Canies possesion.
  • Yeah man, he played a goddamn butler in the batman movies and he still had it.
  • Ok, I'll give you that ;) It's just been a while since I've seen the guy in full-on badass mode.
  • he knocked out a ninja in batman begins
  • M
That pretty much says it all dont it :)

A NINJA! and there's -only two people in the world can do dat, Caine and Michael Dudikoff!!
  • Scott
The movie looks surprisingly meh for all the hype at the beginning of this article. The Gran Torino trailer was much better, but maybe not having a great trailer will ensure that my expectations aren't too high. I'm sure I'll see it.
  • samboni
its weird to see michael caine in a leading role after so many years of being a character actor
  • Sorry, mate, but you're quite wrong on that one. Maybe you're not familiar with Caine's work, but he's almost always played lead roles -- just not as frequently in your lifetime, perhaps.

eg. Alfie, Funeral in Berlin, Billion Dollar Brain, The Magus, Peeper, The Italian Job, Get Carter, Sleuth, and jumping forward a decade, The Hand, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bullet to Beijing, etc.
  • samboni
of course i know he is a leading man but my point is he hasn't in many years hence me saying "after so many years of being a character actor"
  • justrobby
I'm judging this movie by its trailer, and it didn't look that special. A cross between "The Brave One" and "Grand Torino".
  • Dura
Looks like Alfred got some ideas...
  • Khuzud
Yeah, the trailer was kinda lame, but I think Caine has a great knack for picking good roles so I'll definitely watch this.

And taking a shot at Gran Torino and Clint Eastwood was stupid.
  • [A]
Eh. So-so trailer. I'm interested in the movie though--Caine is badass
  • Dr_Gonzo
That's *Sir* Michael Caine to you shmo's. Show some respect... :D
  • Pat
I didn't see the movie, but I was at the TIFF premiere of this and got pushed out of Caine's way by some woman.
  • "Clint Eastwood take note: This is what your old-man vigilante film should have looked like."

Seriously? Gran Torino was excellent. I've seen Harry Brown, and it's excellent as well. COMPLETELY different movies. I don't get the shots at Clint...
  • kzap
    Looks AWESOME!
  • You obviously didn't get GRAN TORINO.
  • Rockie
    well

    that looks killer
  • Definitely going to see it.
  • Oscar
It would have been perfect without that stupid techno song.
  • Harry Brown's background music is for Brit wimps. Give me a new Dirty Harry Callahan over this any day of the week (not that Michael Caine can't hold his own). Also, Gran Torino was a fine flick and the political incorrectness and lame neighbor kid were awesome, on purpose.
  • Oh I get the political incorrectness alright, but that doesn't excuse the sloppy writing, acting, or the song at the end ;) The movie relies entirely on our image of Eastwood as an icon, but has little to offer up on its own.
  • But I dig that the neighbor kids are terrible actors. It works better as feel-good exploitation, and you're right, Gran Torino mainly relies on the iconic nature of Eastwood as a star and national treasure. When I'm his age, I doubt I'll be able to get it up long enough to watch smut, let alone direct a movie in which I protect a hard body, talk like a dirty old man, and drink cases of Pabst on my porch while cursing the multi-culti progress of the world. I think an age-embargo should be placed on movie bloggers who dislike Gran Torino. ...maybe enforcing it can be the plot of the next Dirty Harry film. Smiley.
  • Being from Michigan, Gran Torino was essential viewing. A. It was shot there, and B. it %100 captures the the auto worker mentality with Clint Eastwood - being pissed all the time. There are so many union guys I know that are exactly like him. I especially loved the haircut scenes where instead if saying hello they just cut each other down. I used to work in a shoe store and people would come in saying "screw you" instead of hello. The movie just did a great job of capturing that mentality. Anyways, Harry Brown looks freeking awesome. I can't wait for the US release.
  • Ah, so you're saying love for the film could be a sign of senility? You may have a point there. ;) ;)
  • You've got to be kidding me, Hunter. His music sucks, so you don't like the film? Give me a break.
  • Seems like we can't find enough badasses in this generation so we are still using the badasses of last generation... and I'm okay with that. Michael Caine is the man.
  • Bob O
Gran Torino was a excellant film and told a compelling story and wasnt made to be just a vigilante film, which Eastwood could have easily done if he was only in it for the money. Eastwod has explained in interviews why he feels no need to do another Dirty Harry film, though it would be a easy way for him to make money if that was all he cared about.

This looks like a good movie, and you can give it kudos's without insulting a moive icon!!!!!
  • Poodle
Watch out! It's the kids from the flats!
  • wazuu
This is the British response to Gran Torino, and I'm loving it!
  • jasonb26
serious?! seriously?!?! could caine be any fucking cooler? no. no he could not. the man is the definition of ultimate badass. the rest of the globe must be gauged on the bar he sets.

    this looks too dope.
  • This looks promising. I am a big M. Caine fan, and I have watched all his movies, and even in bad movies he is still good. I don't get all the Gran Torino comparison and negative talk. It's great to see more movies like this, and Torino.
  • A movie where Michael Caine gets revenge on a group of chavs? count me in.
  • Looks like Alfred just wanted to watch the world burn.
  • kolbe
Looks really good. I'll definitely be seeing this.
  • rockinrors
Gran Torino was great, except there was no real gunfight.
This looks like the bit I was waiting for!
  • EvanJDeBiase
    michael caine is one ****** ****** ******
  • jrice73
Gran Torino is an excellent film. I guess some people on this site just have corncobs stuck up their asses when it comes to this film. Whatever. I'll watch Michael Caine read the fucking phonebook and that would be better than most films coming out of Hollywood these days...
  • I hope it doesn't end up like Taken where it wont come out in the Us for about a year later. Movie seems pretty cool, I mostly just want to see it for Michael Caine being batma... I mean kicking ass.
  • AB
God, I'm so sick of the ridiculous over-use of color effects these days. The whole film looks yellow. It's cheap. It's fuckin CSI.

    Some subtlety, please.

    Less is more.
