Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman

Earlier this week I sat down with screenwriter Diablo Cody and producer Jason Reitman to talk about the upcoming teen horror film Jennifer’s Body. That interview will run later this week. But I wanted to first share a snippet from that interview, where Jason and Diablo talk about the “overwhelmingly warm response” they have gotten in the past from /Film commentors. And while Diablo says she avoids any reviews, comments or commentary about her work, it’s clear she has some idea what the /Film commentors have been saying. Watch the hilarious clip after the jump.

  • Didn't appreciate the sarcasm I thought I heard.

    but... I *did* laugh :)

Much of the truth I <3 Reitman but not Cody just yet. She still has to prove herself to me. She hasn't earned my complete trust.

Diablo Cody is a stone cold fox!

Blatant snark, the calling card for genius.

That was funny and while I didn't like Juno as much as some, I still enjoyed a few parts of it. I can't wait to see Up In The Air.
  • haha hilarious.
  • Peter, why do you insist on publishing so many stories about these hacks?!?!
  • rockinrors
    Awwww shucks.

I thought /Film hated Diablo Cody? Wha?
  • /film was a big supporter of Juno, and I personally love Diablo's writing. A big group of vocal commenters are part of the Juno/Diablo backlash. Ad if you didn't get it, Diablo was being sarcastic in the video. I thought that was clear.
  • Stokes
I'm a huge fan too, I was referring to all the commentors (sp?).

    And I'm a bit daft, : /
  • /film commenters are passionate film fans; we have opinions. I think some people (myself included) find it a little annoying that Diablo Cody gets as much press as she does when there are many talented screenwriters who have put out many amazing screenplays who get no press at all. I also think many people (myself included) find her writing a little too cutesy and smug. To mock people who love movies and have opinions seems a little ridiculous to me.
  • I don't think it's ridiculous at all. I think it's great they know they have a few critics here and they aren't really mocking anyone, she's just mostly being sarcastic. And I agree we have opinions but for the most part, the one's that stick out are the mean and hateful one's directed at Diablo Cody.

I've heard of some people saying things about her writing style and what not but in your opinion, who should have won the Oscar that year besides Diablo Cody?
  • greycolumbus
Nancy Oliver for Lars and The Real Girl (which was a better movie overall).
  • greycolumbus
    Agreed.
  • I agree Lars was a great film with a good story but the real snub with that was no nomination for Ryan Gosling.
  • sgtzim
Is it me, or is Reitman starting to look like Edgar Wright.....?
  • I've noticed this too. I was just thinking last night that they need to team up and make a twin buddy comedy movie together.
  • There's just something about her that really burns me. After watching this I started googling her and found her Criterion 10 list:

    http://www.criterion.com/explore/29

As I read through it I got the exact same feeling I got watching Juno; while I like her list (and the general thrust of Juno) there's just something grating about the way she talks. Look at her description of Tenenbaums for example. There's just something sneeringly overwrought about her writing. There's no poetry or lyricism to the way she writes. She's obviously an intelligent and creative person but her writing screams that she so wants you to know that. I know she obviously speaks to people but I just can't shake that feeling I get from her.

JUno was Overrated. If you like Juno, good for you and I"m happy for ya. I saw it after everyone hyped it up and after it was on oscar watch and all that jazz and I honestly didn't get what was so amazing about it. it was pretty typical. Nothing special. Jason Reitman is a wonderful director. THank You For Smoking is awesome. Juno not so much. Diablo Cody has potential, but I think she'll be exposed for what she really is after JENNIFER's Body come's out. She's just lucky and thats all she has going for her...
  • that was funny.. i hope that shows you that your comments mean nothing when they are made in disgust. in the famous words of Ron burgundy keep it classy!
  • In the famous words of Ron Burgundy, "I'm Ron Burgundy?"
  • love all his work and and looking forward to up in the air. also seeing jens body opening weekend.
  • all honestly i think diablo cody is awesome, personality and skill wise, she someone i want to work with and thats including jason.
  • SS
Diablo and Jason I think you both bring a lot to the world of film. Love your work. I thought Jennifer's Body was hilarious and I'm looking forward to Up in the Air.

Seeing Diablo Cody able to joke about herself and the public backlash gives me a whole new respect for her as a person

Juno was generic hipster shit but I'm really looking forward to Up in the Air.
  • plagueoftruth
I really wonder where this hipster thing came from. Is it because the soundtrack has Belle and Sebastian and Velvet Underground? If so, then are we going to call 'Where the Wild Things Are' hipster shit because it has trailer music by Arcade Fire and a score by Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? I really want to know. Because if every time good music is used in a film it's going to be called hipster shit, then I hope every movie fits that category.

Honestly, middle class Pennsylvania suburbanites aren't typical hipsters. If you want hipster shit, watch most things Jim Jarmusch directs. That's hipster shit.
  • hipster, out in the middle of penn? counterculture has its subcultures and what was in juno, i can assure you was not hipster.
  • mitch
can you name me another movie like juno? you can call it many things but i'm not so sure about generic...
  • Juno was neither as good as the hype nor as bad as the inevitable backlash made out. I watched it twice to give it a fair run and just to see if I really was missing something. I liked the characters and the general storyline but the over the top self aware writing had me retching sometimes.
  • You know, when I watch Juno, I just assume someone talks that way and it doesn't really bother me. I've never been bothered by the dialogue of Juno but now it seems that it's Diablo Cody's thing so to speak. I still don't mind it, not even in U.S. of Tara.
  • cool video... all the haters can go f--k themselves. It's not easy writing a good script and trying to pitch it, let alone make the film project happen. Both of them are fantastic and have very promising careers ahead of themselves.

Even if some of you hate their works, it doesn't give a right to disrespect them for the hell of it.

ok i'm one of the pricks who's dissed cody quite a bit - but that was pretty damn funny. i got nothing against reitman whatsoever, in fact he's got the greatest job in the world and he's doin a damn good job of it.

looking forward to jennifer's body, especially if the buzz about 80's horror/comedy is true.
  • Ruiyo
Does anyone still care about Juno?
  • Name
I recon the only ones who should have an opinion that counts are the ones that have actually released their movie in theaters.
  • DanDollar
HAHA. it's cool that she's keen on what people say about her and can still laugh about it.
  • We truly are a bitter bunch of jerks a lot of the time. But trust us Cody we don't hate you. We just think you may have been praised a little too much for an honest but slightly flawed first effort.

Reitman on the other hand is a genius that shouldn't be derided.

We may not be quite as stimulating as Ebert's blog comments but I don't think we are all that bad.
  • STG
What I want to know is that who was the idiot that called Jason a romcom director, hahaha nice shot at all the obsessive fanboys.
  • Sketch
Yeah I didn't quite get that either. I don't see him as a romcom director at all.
  • Name
Diablo Cody is pretty awesome! She's kinda hot, I would definitely like a Lap-dance from her. I mean she used to be a stripper, that's awesome! Now she's a brilliant screenwriter.
  • From memory, the majority of top-regular users here support Diablo. I'd like to support her in more ways than one, personally. Sexy woman with whit, I'm SOLD.

Thoroughly enjoyed Juno (I still don't get what the gripe is with people...) and am anxious to see both Jennifer's Body and Up In The Air. Great vid, Peter.

I would say dialogue like Tarantino's is what makes me think of unique and thought out. Well back then not so much now least not in Deathproof but I mean, with Cody, it just seems so forced as if she's trying to change the language so that everyone can be hip and start using it. I didn't like Juno as much as I thought I would, but I did find it quirky and an interesting story overall, I just couldn't get over the dialogue. As far as Reitman, well his movies are good, I enjoy them but I don't get anything that wows me out of them. Up in the Air did have an awesome trailer, but just wondering what as a director will he do to make a film his and not just...dare I say a generically good film that I can think a few other good director's in his element would produce the same with no imprint?
  • I think the long single take of the girls having lunch in Deathproof justifies that dialogue. I understand they're not having the best conversation but it still makes for a great scene.
  • Sketch
It's good cause it's REAL dialogue but that real dialogue is what bored me at the time. But you're right.
  • Electro_Jones
I'd like to say that The United States of Tara has convinced me that Diablo Cody actually is kind of overrated. Juno was really well constructed, but the dialog sounded forced and was for the most part unfunny. A second viewing on DVD didn't change either of those opinions. Tara just reinforced them. The woman's got a tin ear for dialog, and the fact that so many reviewers single that out as her area of expertise is jaw dropping.
  • They single it out her dialogue writing because it is unique. Love it or hate it (as the case may be) it's a unique blend Diablo has and not many could do it the way she does. It may not be 'real', but at least it's interesting.
