Stone

Millenium Films has released a marketing trailer for The Painted Veil and We Don’t Live Here Anymore director John Curran’s new film, a prison-set psychological crime thriller. Edward Norton stars as a convicted arsonist who looks to manipulate a parole officer (Robert De Niro) into a plan to secure his parole by placing his beautiful wife (Mila Jovovich) in the lawman’s path.

Originally written as a play, and adapted for the screen by Independent Spirit Award-nominated scribe Angus MacLachlan, a Winston-Salem screenwriter and playwright, best known for the 2005 film Junebug and the short film Tater Tomater. A bit of trivia: Zachary Quinto (Heroes, Star Trek) played the lead in the one and only Los Angeles table reading performance of the play in 2003.

It’s a rough cut trailer for exhibitors and marketing, but you’ll get the idea. Watch it now embedded after the jump. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Stone hits theaters in 2010.

Apart from the fact that the trailer shows too much (once again!), this cast looks quite interesting... all three of them need something good in their portfolio and judging from the director's previous efforts I'd say, STONE might be the right choice for any of them.
  • guyfish
you think Robert De Niro needs something good in his portfolio?
  • stb247
Nowadays he does. What's the last good movie he was in? If he doesn't want to fuck up his portfolio the way Pacino did in the past ten years, yeah, I think he defenitely needs something good to show.
  • guyfish
His portfolio is already fucked, best to just remember him (and Pacino) for their older work. Norton's not doing too bad, I do like him as an actor and it would be nice to see him in something to compliment American History X and Fight Club but I don't think it will be this movie.
  • Norton surely doesn't need something good in his portfolio. American History X, Fight Club, The Illusionist, one of the better superhero performances as Bruce Banner, and a hugely critically acclaimed performance just 4 years ago in Kingdom of Heaven. The man's portfolio is -littered- with great performances.

kingdom of heaven was orlando bloom
  • euge
Norton was the leper prince, uncredited
  • Yeah, Norton gained incredibly good reviews as his performance as the Leper Prince of Jerusalem.
  • Not getting too inspired by the trailer's generic moral dilemma theme and showboating Norton. But any opportunity to see DeNiro do some real acting (rare these days - needs to sack his agent) is exciting. For all his showboating, Norton could get a reaction from DeNiro - he certainly needs a challenge.

And can Jovovich act? Good for her!

Cast looks great, plot looks terrible. Trailer gave away too much. I now have no reason to see this at theaters.

You think Edward Norton needs something good in his portfolio?

Just like DeNiro: What's the last good film Norton has done in the past ten years? I know, it was "The painted veil" but how many people have actually seen this great pic? So, yeah, I do believe Norton needs more movies like that (or "25th hour" which is the only other good thing of his past ten years)
  • The Illusionist and Kingdom of Heaven. The Illusionist was great in every aspect, especially him, and Kingdom of Heaven was decent while his performance was spectacular.

Red Dragon, Death to Smoochy and 25th Hour were pretty good in my book. I looked to see his 10 year mark and noticed "Fight Club" which I think is a pretty poor way to judge his career. It was a great movie but it's time to move on.
  • Thank you. Death to Smoochy is vastly underrated.
  • Guest
OMG i cant believe you. The Italian Job, The Illusionist, American History X, Rounders, 25th Hour, The Incredible Hulk

Ed Norton doesn't look like he's doing anything good or special here, but Robert De Niro might be pulling out a good or great performance once again. That alone has me excited. And I literally mean that alone.
  • surgemonkay
I would watch this because Edward Norton is in it. Other than that it looks pretty mediocre.
  • There was a time when Robert DeNiro barking "Sit the fuck down!" sent tingles down your spine and made you take notice. Now, it's just sorta, oh... DeNiro's yelling again. Must be a serious moment or something. I'm disheartened because I'm a huge fan of his and Norton, and I SO want to look forward to this movie. It seems to me like Norton is the only one doing any acting.

Norton with a goatee = Bad Norton (American History X, The Italian Job, 25th Hour)
  • fanboy_d
norton with cane row = win
  • Swarley
Norton with wife beater = every movie he's ever been in (except kingdom of heaven)
    But I'm not complaining.
  • Fir3Wolf
Looks pretty average at beat. Big fan of Edward Norton so I'll probably catch this sometime on DVD or something.
  • looks awesome!
    de niro and norton rule

For some reason De Niro in that gave me a weird flashback to cape fear.
  • tits @ 1:45.

Yea, I saw some Jovovich tatas and I hate that Paul W.S. Anderson is tappin dat ass. Anyway, I'm guessing this is a red band trailer considering some of the language as well as the nudity. I'm not sure what to make of this though. It looks like American History X meets Fatal Attraction. It also seems like something that could be on the Lifetime channel if it didn't have Norton and DeNiro in it.
  • Great, with this and Leaves of Grass, that's two Ed Norton flicks I have to look forward to.
  • chronozome
    umm...NSFW tag?
  • rockinrors
    Looks good.
  • The trailers does give away too much. It was not meant for audiences to see but to give distributors an idea of what they would be purchasing and/or selling.
  • Completely agree that the trailer gives away too much but again, it's a marketing trailer and not a theatrical one. Not sure if Norton's giving any different a performance than say his AMERICAN HISTORY X, maybe a bit toned down. But rather than this, I'm more interested in him in LEAVES OF GRASS.

---Do we REALLY need another doper saga?
A talented man like Norton -who's achieved
'fame' and made his money -and STILL fancies
himself an artist should really be up to bolder
and more daring things. CLUE ---glutted, junk
cedit America is NOW Red China's opium addict
-and helping them to bury consciousness of
the most awesome genocidal legacy in recorded
    human history---

SO -stop hashing in with the corrupt Hollywood
staus quo Ed ---and start earning the name 'artist'...
  • tom p
    ---Yet another doper saga? -Huh?

Norton et al are talented for sure --but apparently too bought off
-or too lazy to take a good look at anything new. ---yawn
