Joe Carnahan’s A-Team film is actually coming together, if you pardon the expression, right now. What a strange world we live in. Does anybody actually remember the show as being any good? I thought even its fans had it pegged as a bit of a kitschy, guilty pleasure.

Soon we’ll start seeing images from the set, I’m sure, and most of the speculation about the cast and probably even that iconic van will be laid to rest. Indeed, more details are getting nailed down all the time with Sharlto Copley’s negotiations now confirmed by the trades, and a lead role for Jessica Biel also reportedly in the works.

A story bubbled up last week that Copley was negotiating a turn as Howling Mad Murdoch in the film. Variety now tell us that his casting has been locked, which seems like a smart move on the producers’ part.

Biel’s contract is also still unsigned, apparently. Her potential role has been described as “the ex-love of Cooper’s character ‘Faceman,’ the general pursuing the team”. That description is as clear as mud – are they trying to say Faceman is the general? Have they gone that wrong? Or are they alleging Biel will be playing the general? That’s against type a little, isn’t it? I think that’s the idea, though.

If the rumors pan out, Biel will be taking a role in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor when that gets underway. The A-Team can keep her busy in the meantime, I guess.

I’m intrigued as to how Carnahan and co. have retooled this basic idea to make it fly as a modern big screen picture. I’m not expecting Todd Phillips’ Starsky and Hutch or McG’s Charlie’s Angels… but having said that, I’m not entirely sure what to expect. How serious is this film going to be?

The casting seems to be rather fanboy friendly across the board, with all of the stars being favoured in the tight circle of internet movie news sites I call home. Will it have cross over appeal to the public at large? Who cares? Star Trek wasn’t jam packed with names and that took off like a rocket.

Wait CARNAHAN is doing this? Jesus help us this is gonna blow. Why the F would he get the job. The A Team is all about the characters. If it HAS to be a film - get a director who understands 'character' and not one who revels in capturing the magic of douchebags on screen, interupted with look-I-can-cut-fast-and-crank-the-color-levels directing. Pretty awesome outside-the-box casting of Copley though. Kudos to that if it happens...
  • No, the A-Team is all about building a battle car in a shed using whatever happens to be laying around.

Smokin' Aces was AWFUL, but Narc was a very well made film. Maybe, just maybe, Carnahan will return to form? Probably not though.

A note to all Americans. Sharlto's accent in District 9 was also put on as he isn't Afrikaans, but is an English speaking South African (this place is complicated!). Also the Afrikaans translation of the f-word, is spelt "fok" and is literally pronounced like "fork" but without the "r", so it's fok and it's fokkin cool that Sharlto's got the part. :)

Dwight Schultz had bit of a Southern accent though didn't he?

The only hope I had for an A-Team movie actually being any good was the cast, but now we have a fighter cast and potentially Jessica Biel? I'm still baffled why she is cast in movies especially action movies - did they see Blade 3? She was not good. Same look, same character all the time.
  • Meh Meli, I think Rampage will do fine. I think no matter who was casted as B.A. Baracus (unless it was Mr. T) people would of been upset about it.
Now with Jessical Biel, did anybody else witness the turdfest known has Stealth? Her acting in that was abysimal. All of her movies as you said, same look, same character, same facial expressions all the time. It's a shame that the sole reason why she gets put in big action movies is because she is a very attractive woman. That is it.
  • Jessica on the poster and in the trailers wearin' somthin' sexy. That's about all I look forward to at this point.

The A-Team is one 80's show from my childhood that I can still watch and really enjoy. Yes, the show was formulaic and the use of weapons was completely unrealistic. However, at its heart the A-Team was kind of a modern day Robin Hood story about a group of men protecting the weak and innocent even as they are hunted by the law themselves. There was also some good character work in the show, particularly by George Peppard and Dwight Schultz. I hope with the film adaptation they lose the campiness but keep the heart of the show, which was a group of men who were always willing to put it on the line to protect people.

Should be a fun movie... I passed a class in College by doing a report on why the A-Team was the greatest show of all time... yeah, I had a good college experience

Pity, both of them suck in acting big time. The movie's doomed. Wooden people and brainless athletes cast as iconic (ok, cheesy, but still memorable) characters.
  • This was 'doomed' long before these two were cast.

Why calling someone with different opinion a troll? Give me good example of Biel's professional performance. Sharlto Copley is new so no examples except beloved by many D9, which I personally disliked, mainly due to his acting and hey - guess what! - I'm allowed to think so so before giving elaborate reply in a way you did, think for a while blind boy.

Because you gave no reasons as to why you thought their acting sucked and just insulted him.

    Yeah, you're a troll.

You are the first and only person in the world I've seen complain about Copley's acting in D9. Everyone loved him in it because it was some fresh amazing acting. Have fun being 1 out of 6.5 billion.
  • This sounds awesome. But please Coopley, don't try to hide your accent. You sound badass with it. And who knows how you'll sound without it.
