Here’s a novel approach to a potential film rivalry: view the other party as marketing for your own project. Steven Spielberg has wanted to make a biopic of Abraham Lincoln for quite some time, but various roadblocks have been put in the project’s path. The film, currently planned to be based on a script by Tony Kushner, would focus primarily on the Civil War, and Lincoln’s unhappy appraisal of the war’s effect. But there’s a competing project: Robert Redford’s The Conspirator, recently confirmed to star Robin Wright Penn and James McAvoy, which focuses on the Lincoln assassination plot. But Spielberg isn’t looking at the Redford film as a rival; more like an ad for his own.

Speaking to Peter Bart at Variety, Spielberg says:

We are very happy that Redford will be doing this Lincoln movie. It is completely different from what our DreamWorks Lincoln movie will be, and we believe that it will add to the commercial potential of our film. Lincoln as a subject is inexhaustible.

Which basically says, yeah, we’re still making this one. Eventually. And no, Redford’s movie won’t stop ours.

Regardless, there’s still Harvey to worry about. Spielberg is still updating the Mary Chase play Harvey as his next feature. Recent reports suggest that he wants Robert Downey, Jr. for the lead. That’s a choice that is somewhere between blindingly obvious and utterly inspired. Downey would be playing Elwood P. Dowd, a drunk in some incarnations of the story, whose sister attempts to have him ‘hospitalized’ when he begins to introduce his imaginary friend Harvey, a six-foot tall rabbit, at a party. Downey’s past and his ability to conjure lovable eccentricity make him potentially a perfect choice for the role. While I’d rather see Downey doing more interesting films, his involvement is the first thing I can think of that would get me excited for Harvey.

  • Spielberg + Downey Jr.? There.

This whole Harvey remake has bummed me out from the get go. Lincoln sounds much better to me.

When's the last time Spielberg hired anyone who wasn't at the top of the zeitgeist? I'm guessing Schindler's List was his last film to make stars, instead of feature them.

I mean, he had Matthew McConaughey starring in Amistad. I love Downey Jr., but c'mon, Spielberg, throw us a curveball now and then.

Vin Diesel in Saving Private Ryan. He was an unknown at that point. I'm sure there are other examples. Samantha Morton in Minority Report?
  • I am far more interested in the Lincoln project than the Harvey remake.

The idea of a Spielberg shot Civil War battle makes me weep and orgasm at the same time. Hurry up and do Harvey and get to the goods.
  • I totally agree with William_Wright. Spielberg's work on Saving Private Ryan shows that he is among the best directors of combat scenes ever (has any combat scene to date really topped the beginning of SPR?). As a huge Civil War buff I think Spielberg could really bring the reality and tragedy of the Civil War home to a new generation of moviegoers.

That said, why do we assume his Lincoln biopic will have battle scenes? Lincoln was certainly never in battle (except for this one time he was in the same general vicinity of a little skirmish. Hardly cinematic). In order for this movie to have a battle scene, it would need to develop characters apart from Lincoln who were actually in the Union army. Otherwise, cutting to a battle scene would feel like "meanwhile, in a completely different movie." I remember reading that Tony Kushner's script was based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's book Team of Rivals. If it's a close adaptation, then we can be pretty sure there won't be any battle scenes.
  • Liam Neeson is slated to play Lincoln. That alone is enough for me to want Spielberg to hurry up and film it. Really, Neeson pairing up with Spielberg to play one of the greatest men in American history? Hell yes.

Not too excited for the Lincoln flicks, but it is nice/funny to see the competition.

Harvey, however, I'd love to see. I've done the play and seen the original movie and I think if Speilberg did it and took his time it could be great and highly enjoyable, especially with RDJ.
  • Merciful_budah
Hell yeah dude. I directed the play version a couple of years ago. It's a killer show.
  • JeremyTKM
Haha - props to you. That's awesome, it truly is amazing. I only hope that the movie does it justice (it being both the old movie and play version).
  • Merciful_budah
DAMN YOU SPIELBERG! I was so set with my dissaproval of a Harvey remake. And now you cast RDJ, and I can't help myself but want to see it now.

All I have to say is I better not actually see a rabbit in this movie...
  • I don't care what Spielberg makes when, I'll be seeing it.
