paranormal-activity

The ultra-low-budget horror film Paranormal Activity has been building acclaim over the past year since it screened at the Screamfast and Slamdance film festivals. I was able to see this film, in the dark, in an outdoor park, at the Telluride Film Festival, and I think Paramount has the next Blair Witch Project on their hands, if they market it right. Even if you aren’t creeped out, you’re sure to have a lot of fun if you see this in a packed auditorium. Teenage girls at my screening were screaming throughout. A door opens by itself, scream. Nothing happens, scream. The way this film builds tension, will have you on the edge of your seat, and your date squiring and gripping for your arm in the seat next to you.

Right now they’re doing a very small release, in a few select cities on September 25th, to get people talking. They have released a brand new movie trailer, which consists mostly of reactions to a test screening. Smart move.  I must warn you, one of the shots in the trailer is from very late in the film, and could be considered a spoiler. Watch the new trailer embedded after the jump.

The film was shot for $11,000 over the period of one week, for the most part with two actors in a house. Directed by first time writer/director Oren Peli, Paranormal Activity is inspired by Peli’s own experiences with strange noises after moving into a new house. The film centers around a young couple (played by Micah Sloat and Katie Featherstone) who learn that their house is haunted, and end up having increasingly disturbing experiences.

The film consists entirely of home video footage, which is probably why it’s drawing comparisons to Blair Witch. But I assure you, this film crams a lot more story and character development into 10 minutes than the entire Blair Witch, and the crappy sequel.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple.

I don't get it. This doesn't look scary at all. Powder foot prints on the floor? Really? It looks like a poorman's combo of bits from The Excorcist and The Amityville Horror.

Maybe I'm missing something here. But I'm not picking up what they're putting down.
  • muffin7
I think they're saving the scary stuff for the theaters. Would you rather have all of the scary parts revealed in the trailer? I certainly wouldn't.

Looking forward to this one. Always loves me a good old fashioned scare-fest!
  • capawesome
I mean in terms of the trailer. I don't find anything interesting. Much less scary about it.

In paranormal investigation work you put powder down in areas where you believe that spirits are walking or paths. Sometimes if a spirit interacts with the powder it either leaves drag marks, prints, or scatters the powder. So if someone thought a spirit was walking around their bed at night they could put powder down on the floor to see if in the morning there had been any changes to the powder possibly indicating paranormal activity.

    I'm just saying. :)

    i do agree :) rowan
  • jim
you have to see it. so dont just start talkin shit if you havnt seen it..
  • Elise Alyxandra
You really have to belive into the paranormal stuff and demons to get it. belive me i belive in the stuff. ive seen it four times and still i get really scared. I cant ever be by myself after i see it. I say its the scariest movie I have ever seen in my life. til this day i spread that.
Like I said, if you dont really belive in the stuff and or experienced it, it prob wont effect or scare you like its supposed to :)

Fuck it, I'm inviting a hot girl to watch this. haha.

Honestly, I prefer the other trailer.
  • Betch101
    GEH IT, Gregory!
  • The scariest thing, is expecting something and it never really happens. That's why the Blair Witch was so engaging. You felt trapped, alone and terrified along with the 3 main characters. This movie feels to be touching the same nerve as the Blair Witch Project did. It seems real, it seems disturbing, it seems original, and that is something we do not see with movies these days. I'm intrigued, I want to see more, and it makes me want to go 2 hours out of my way up to Columbus to see this movie. Right on.

I'm pretty sure you only posted this so you could bash on The Blair Witch Project.. oh well
  • [A]
    Cool trailer, by the way.
  • Dylan
Hell yeah! There is a movie screening in Madison about 2 min. from where I live.
  • AWhitman
i hate how over-sound fx'd trailers are these days.. let the story speak for itself!
  • I don't know why people rip on the Blair Witch so much. It doesn't need any elaborate story arc or character development.. The goal of it was to feel like real homemade footage of scary shit happening in the woods and to make you feel their fear, and it completely succeeds.. I think its easily one of the best and scariest horror films of the past 15 years. Plus made by some film students with a few thousand? It has its flaws but ultimatly the whole thing was brilliant.

Back on topic.. For all the same reasons I love blair witch, I'm super excited for this.. Everything I read is the best press a movie can get.. Nothing about the story aside from being scary as all hell. However.. That selection of cities for the 25th release is bogus.

People "rip" on Blair Witch Project so much because it wasn't scary,it was annoying. The shaky cam gave me a headache and I wasn't scared in the least especially since they weren't scared enough to put down the damn camera. I mean, really,if there was something truly scary and life-threatening going on,they would forget all about the camera. I know that this was the basis of the movie, having the footage, but there should've been a better way to portray the fear with out having them hold on to that camera until their supposed deaths.
  • steve_G13
people rip on Blair W. because it was not true. This movie these things really happen, I can attest to that
  • EJ
You are an idiot. Or schizophrenic.
  • Elise Alyxandra
ha ha ha ha yes i thought it was annoying too. not even close to paranormal activity....to me :)
  • i didn't find anything particularly scary about the trailer, but i think id give it a chance if it comes to theaters around my way.
  • jimmytheghost
Peter...I love you. I thank you for providing me with my number one movie news source. The work you do is severely unrewarding for the amount you put in.

But from now on, please don't tell me there is a spoiler in the trailer when I would have no idea it was a spoiler. Especially when the trailer is just a mash of clips. After reading your comments, I now I know the shot at the end of the trailer is a spoiler for the whole film when it originally just looked like a random shot from the movie. If a spoiler is seen by an audience who doesn't know better and no one is there to call it...does it make a sound?

With that said, this movie looks amazing. Loved the Blair Witch Project and I know I'll love this too.

But most of all...I love /Film. I'm sorry for being a dick :)
  • quintushalls
    Trailers are spoilers.
  • evanz
I think the spoiler was when she said "If it's *not* a ghost, what is it?"
  • Hanswurst
I wonder why they stumble around in the dark. They could alway turn on the light. Logical error....
  • monkeymafia
The lights probably don't work... Haven't seen the film, but having seen a few horror films, I know that you can always assume the lights won't work at some point... Logical pass...
  • zgirl
they do have a light on. the camera isn't on nightvision, they have a lamp on in the corner across the room from the bed so they can see what happens in the camera... as far as 'logical errors' go this movie is pretty hard to criticize. and of course is completely amazing.
  • IK!
This trailer is totally abysmal. A part of me is interested in seeing the film, but this just makes the movie look so...dumb.
    I'll wait.
  • kolbe
I think this looks really scary. Cant wait to see it.
  • jerimonewilliams
PEOPLE NEED TO DEMAND that it be shown in other cities like New York and
L A!! I am dying to see it in New York. Go to the site and demand it:

  • Just screened the festival cut in class (so the version that Paramount bought, not the version that will be hitting theaters) and I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. I'm a bit sensitive to horror-suspense films as I seem to have a low"fright factor." There are a few "jump" moments, but for the most part it is simply increasing tension that ratchets up more and more as the film goes on. I hesitate to comment on the actual content of the film for fear of spoiling anything or coloring somebody's reactions, but I will say that the 99-minute run time of the cut we screened felt much longer, and I mean that in the best way possible. My shoulders are actually tired from being rigid with tension for easily the last 45 minutes of the film.

As previously mentioned, the film was made for $11,000, which truly makes this film an tremendous accomplishment. I recommend this film wholeheartedly!

  • rockinrors
All these test footage trailers are a load of crap.
[Rec] did a trailer like that too.
I've never seen anyone in the cinema react like that... :S
  • ake
This looks badass if they're indeed hiding all the big scares. GREAT trailer. Can't stress enough how much the trailer is sucking me into going to see it.
  • cattygirl
I don't need a trailer to know that I will want to see this. I loved Blair Witch the first time. I'm more afraid of the things you don't see than the things you do...
  • mitchbrown1990
    how do you demand it
  • Name
They need to release this in every theater....Thats dumb if they dont they could make a killing with money if they do ill be pissed if they dont let all america see it
  • Ghost PI
I agree, it is rediculous that they wont just release it everywhere! the majority of people wont even get to see it.....why even get us hyped up about it. screw that!!
  • Meagan
I remember the craze over Blair Witch Project. I didn't even think that one was even scary. I have a feeling that this one won't scare me either. I hate it when they build it all up to be so big and scary,it's always a let down.

  • Lisa
I drove 20 miles to see this movie with my two teenage girls. This rates right up there with one of the dumbest movies ever. There was one scene that was a little creepy but other than that I just kept waiting and waiting for the scary stuff. What a major disappointment!!! I wouldn't even wait for the DVD release and waste money on that.
  • alisha
seen it, it is not scary at all worst movie i ever seen, a boyfriend n girlfriend walk around their house with a camcorder. two thumbs down it really sucked
  • Bia

  • Name
the movie really isn't scary..initially. it's like a seed--it takes time to be horrifying. the scariest part is the inexpensive production technique--it's realistic, adding to the scary element. just my opinion..

  • joshns
it was good scary mostly becuase it felt so real. i thought i was based on a true story witch made it more scary come to find out its not.
  • Tmarsh0508
I know the movie looks stupid. Before i saw the movie i said its stupid, it doesnt even look scary blah blah. But i recently go dragged into seeing it. I walked out shaking. The movie was literally the first horror film i have seen in my 20 years that i can define as Horrifying.
  • Name
My husband wants to see this movie and I'll give it a shot. I like my horror movies subtle and intense so I have hopes that I will like it. If you like this kind of movie there is plenty of real life video footage on the internet of people filming paranormal activity in their homes. The truth of it all lies somewhere in the middle so you will have to weed out what is logical and what is crap.
