Harrison Ford and Karen Allen Talk Indy 5

ford_kicks_back

Another Indiana Jones film seems inevitable, doesn’t it? Do you even want it though? Speaking at the Deauville Film Festival this weekend, where he was given a lifetime contribution award, Harrison Ford revealed what he knew about the upcoming fifth outing for his adventuous alter ego; meanwhile, a video has been posted online showing Karen Allen talking last weekend at Dragon Con and spilling what few beans she had to share.

We’ll start with Karen’s input. This abbreviated video - cut short when the camcorder in use ran out of memory - shows her addressing the Dragon Con crowd. If you don’t want to see the whole thing, I’ll summarize what I think are the key points allow.

So, she thinks that an official announcement has been made and that according to an unnamed friend of hers that heard it, the film will be due in 2012. Hmmm. It seems somebody somewhere has gotten the wrong end of the stick - but the mistake here might just be the ‘official’ part, the info itself might be good. I guess it depends on who this friend is and where they get their info.

Harrison Ford’s statement is a little less fuzzy and infinitely more watertight.

According to Tout Le Cine, Ford told the assembled press at Deauville that he, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have agreed on the maguffin for the fifth film. Well, my translation software doesn’t say the ‘fifth maguffin’ but the ‘fifth element’ - I hope he wasn’t just talking about the Luc Besson movie.

Now that the premise is locked down and, according to Ford “George is working actively”, all that remains is to get a script written that they still all agree on. That might not be so easy.

Or, considering they all agreed on the script for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, perhaps they’ve stopped being at all ‘precious’ and writing a screenplay the three of them would rubberstamp will prove no more difficult than firing up Final Draft and headbutting the keyboard for a while.

I sincerely hope they never, ever shove Shia upfront and make an Indiana Jones sequel without Ford in the lead role. It’s his winking, twinkling demeanor that I watch them for in the first place.

Well, that and bitching about the law of diminishing returns.

Hasn't Lucas and co. beat enough dead horses further to death?
  • Gelman
If Indiana Jones is to survive, it'll be because the creators have embraced the James Bond formula: Allow new directors to come in, allow for younger actors to take over the role (and no, I don't mean LaBeouf; I'm thinking Matthew Davis), and allow for expansion of the Jones universe. Yes, Ford will always be the Connery, and there will be hits and misses, but every once and awhile, we'll get a Daniel Craig/Casino Royale.

Otherwise, if Ford is kept on it'll force the story to take place post-1950s. The true Jones timeframe is the 1930s. For that we need youth, and directors who have not gone gaga over CGI.

It's the only way the franchise can continue.
  • slumbergod
Please, no Shia, no aliens, less cgi (= no Lucas)
  • mangoshakes
    heck yeah i want it.

"...firing up Final Draft and headbutting the keyboard for a while."

It's so funny because it sounds about right!
  • pic_czar
spielberg needs to get back to directing some passion projects.
  • After the 4th installment, I am hope with this 5th installment, Indy goes to find the legend of Sasquatch. I mean, could it be worse than Aliens?
  • whsmith
I'm thinking Spielberg should continue to blend genres he's previously worked in. How about "Indiana Jones and the Golden Dinosaur Egg of Terror"?
  • CyT
Thats awesome! Jurassic park with Indiana Jones .. thats about the best mashup I have ever heard.
  • love it. whsmith, sounds like a winner in my book. I wonder what they can put Indy in to blow up a town only to have him to survive.
  • ambient_indie
The fourth Indiana Jones film was awful. It is so clear to me that Ford and Spielberg gave up their creative freedom for a downright terrible half-way written piece of garbage just to make something. I'm done with Indiana Jones. It will take a lot for me to see this one. Jones was interesting in Raiders, Temple and Crusade. We had character development. Crystal Skull took the character and sucked the nostalgia from all previous films. Skull was one of those rare occasions where I felt insulted as an audience member.
  • existenz
I know someone who worked on the movie, and they said Spielberg and Harrison Ford would constantly refer to the movie as a piece of shit. As in, "Let's hurry up and shoot this piece of shit."

They were doing it only for the money. Ford's career has been in a ditch and Spielberg hadn't been box office king for years. Hopefully next time they actually care about it, but I have my doubts.
  • CyT
Thats completely the opposite of what I have heard, almost. I believe Harrison and Speilberg always wanted to do a 4th film but Lucas kept on either rejecting the script or re-working it so much the other two didnt like it. In the end they compromised and they weren't 100% happy, but at least they got to do what they love and thats making a kick arse cool film.
They really dont need to worry about money any more. Its just about the opportunity of making an Indy film and travelling the world doing it. So as long as Lucas doesnt have much creative control this time (which he will) it will be better. Or, Harrison and Spielberg will stand up to him a bit more at the script writing stage like they did on the original trilogy.
  • shadow
No, just fucking stop. Spielberg, stop doing sequels and remakes, they are destroying your name. Lucas, GO BACK TO SHOOTING ON LOCATION YOU IDIOT, OR AT LEAST MAKE LOOK LIKE YOU ARE.
  • I want a fifth film.
  • mangoshakes
i still feel the first like 2/3 of Skull are great. and the intro is awesome, the shadow against the car when he's putting on his hat is so beast. love it.
  • whsmith
Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite movie of all time....
Contrary to popular opinion, I love Temple of Doom, and put Crusade about equal with Doom. I've always wished they'd made more Indy movies back in the late 80s/ early 90s....
Having said that... I wish everyone involved would now retire and stop making movies. All of these people, including Spielberg, seem to be creatively bankrupt. It makes me sad - I know they're all going to go on milking their old properties and make lots of money doing it, but for their legacy as great filmmakers - I wish they knew when to hang up the hat.
  • JohhnyUtah
if they listened to any *honest* feedback from Crystal Skull, they'll hopefully want to redeem themselves and make the 5th a better/good movie.

if they haven't, start mentally preparing yourself for Shia to have a CG gopher sidekick— and maybe even Samuel L Jackson as an incredulous teacher who's accidentally taken along for the ride.
I'm sure Harrison Ford will be in it for at least 15 minutes though. Hahahaha...

    F*ck.
  • CyT
That pretty sums up my feelings too.. fingers crossed they just concentrate, agree and do it for the fans!
  • If the last part was a petition I would sign it.
  • Plan9
I'm holding out on the idea that Indy has kind of Star-Trekitis, where every other film is good. Raiders still hangs on to my personal top5 all time list. Which is saying something since ToD did everything it could to ruin it for me. At least #4 had no Short Round to embarrass his ancestors.
  • existenz
I'd love to see it. Hopefully with a better script and less of Le Beef.
  • Harrison and Steve
just make "Raiders of The hollow earth"
(where ford, connery and sallah set out to locate it, only to find hitler planning another world tour) and all will be forgiven.
  • goobity
I love it when random forum-posting fanboys get all enraged and weepy.

Indy 4 wasn't as good as the first 3 (Classic) films. Boo Hoo.
Lucas and Speilberg have done an incalculable amount of good ON film and FOR film. They've earned every dollar I've forked over to 'em.
Bring it on. I'll be there with popcorn in hand.
  • whsmith
I love it when random forum posting fanboys get very self righteous about their own opinions, pretending that lower standards are somehow more mature - engaging in cognitive dissonance to justify the money and emotional investment they've put into a given movie franchise - defending billionaire Hollywood film makers who's feelings might be hurt cause someone said their work sucks.

You're welcome to your opinion and enjoyment of Indy 4, The Prequels, Transformers or whatever other crap you happen to like and obediently line up for "with popcorn in hand" - but please refrain from telling other people they're not allowed to dislike or even hate something just because Lucas and Spielberg once did great things, are above criticism etc etc. If anyone else had made Indy 4 - what standard would you then hold it to? Would it then be above criticism?
  • probot
    Well played. Set and match!
  • agemoi
couldnt agree with you more. These guys used to be legends and Lucas is known for a fact to just be in it for the cash. He has no passion, no desire to make anything half decent.

Someone, lets say Joe, once told lucas that his first movie was Joe's favorite. the college film he did ((cant remember the name now)). and as opposed to a nice modest thank you all he says is "Why? that didnt make any money." Was in a book a friend of mine read. After that i lost all respect i had left for the man

Who cares if they once did good work, its worse they keep desecrating their own names
  • Weyland_Yutani
Indy 4 was the biggest disappointment I've ever had at the theater. If they harnessed some of the better parts of the crystal skull mythology, they might have had something, but instead they simply created a magic skull that got them out of every possible situation. Spielberg, who even in films like War of the Worlds has shown that he can build tension into a sequence, completely mailed in every part of Indy4. Creatively on vacation.

I'm a huge fan of Ford's and the original 2 films, but I'm honestly of the opinion that you need to bring Indy back to the beginning. Hire a new actor and get some new creative blood involved. It's worked for Bond over and over. I'm open to a new Indiana Jones.
  • CyT
I have faith. I want Indiana Jones films to come out forever and reckon a new one would be better than Kingdom. But, I agree Brendon .. they can only be headlined by Harrison. If Shia ever becomes 'Indiana Junior, Junior' ill personally fly over and do what happened in the south park episode to everyone who works on the film. Twice.
  • I think we'd all feel better about a 5th Indy film if it wasn't such a blatant cash-grab.
  • mangoshakes
not much isn't at this scale. but i do genuinely believe Ford when he said "they're just so damn fun" to make.
  • I realize it's all business at the chore of it all, and no doubt it would be a great deal of fun to be part of that production. But when you hear Spielberg talk about the first Indy and what they were aspiring to achieve with that film, well... each new addition sort of tarnishes that polish a little more.
  • greggorybasore
I'm part of that seemingly small minority who liked Crystal Skull so I'm all for a 5th film.
  • saeseetom
    Same.

Enjoyed the SW prequels too. Didn't absolutely hate them with a burning passion, but didn't think they were the best films ever made.
  • greggorybasore
I was disappointed with Episode I, and unimpressed with Episode II but I thought Episode III made up for it. For me it was the only one of the prequels that really recaptured the epic sweeping feel the original trilogy had for me when I was a kid.
  • frelling_cute
I would go see if if Lucas didnt have script approval
  • twophrasebark
George Lucas does not care what you think. Sorry. He's just one of those people we all know that keep doing the same thing, no matter how many people beg them to stop.

Will go see a fifth, sixth and seventh movie. But Crystal Skull was horrendous. I wouldn't get your hopes up.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Seriously, people were already making fun of geriatric Indy in the last installment. Time to pass the torch.

Spielberg has been making a lot of questionable choices lately:
Oldboy remake, TinTin, Indy4???? Ridiculous for a filmmaker with his pedigree.
  • haroldsmaude
    Fuck. Me.

    Worst idea ever.
  • Happy_Evil_Dude
It's neither "fifth maguffin" or "fifth element", he actually said "5th installment"
  • Dannymanners
I hate so say it - but even though I am not a fan of Indy 4 - which to me -is one of the most crushingly disapointing films ever (along side Terminator 4 -weirdly) - I will still go and see this....as will everyone else...lets face it. Its still Indy at the end of the day. I`m hopeful thay will make a more mature film in-light of the mixed reviews Skull got - hopefully alittle like to tonal change between Temple of Doom and Crusade
  • RJBlakeAAU
I believe I am one of the few people who actually enjoy Indy 4. HOWEVER, I can still see its faults and know it isn't an ideal movie. I do not see all the hate towards all the aliens though. The main reason I would complain about the ending would be it was basically Nazi's getting their heads melted off. Now, I recognize all the problems and see how people disliked it, but I had a fun time despite its flaws.

I also feel the only reason that THAT film was made by Spielberg and Ford was that Ford had said that if they don't do an Indy 4 by 2008, it would never happen. I have a feeling Spielberg and Ford have another story they want to tell and wanted to keep the franchise alive and this was the only story that Lucas could come up with... because... well, I don't think anybody can say that he hasn't become to obsessed with money and not with story. I miss the guy who came up with perfect story structure like that long manuscript that birthed Raiders of the Lost ark... I miss him a lot.
  • erikphnx
I actually liked Crystal Skull. However I will never forgive them for blowing the chance to put the buzz saw contraption at the front of the truck to better use during the jungle chase. That truck was the first to be taken out, would have loved to see it take out a few vehicles, russians and of course nearly take out the heros !
  • Weyland_Yutani
exactly - just one example among many missed opportunities for cliffhanger drama, not unlike the sliding platform entrance to the temple, which opened an opportunity for Spielberg to get creative, but instead the sequence is paint-by-numbers, ending with a 10 ft. drop into water. Whiff.

Not unlike the unargued, instant decision to drive a car off a cliff. Why worry? Young Spielberg would have made his characters sweat a little.
  • Yes, I do want it. The fourth one was exhilarating.
  • Dannymanners
    seriously?
  • James Van Fleet
You know why Harrison has so much fun making these movies? Because Indy 4 earned him $60 million dollars. Think about that for a second. Let it settle in your mind. Sixty million one dollar bills. Sixty thousand-thousand dollars. Everyone talks about that legendary $20 million paycheck for Jim Carrey in "The Cable Guy." Three times that. Three times the ceiling for any other actor. Probably more, given how studios are trying to scale back.

    Sixty million dollars.

I'd want to make another one, too.
  • Tom
In this one, he gets into the fridge to keep himself from spoiling.
  • JS
Anyone here who says they won't see it will end up seeing it.

Personally, I thought the fourth was the weakest but wasn't without its fun moments. And I will see the fifth.
  • JS
Anyone who's posted saying they won't see Indy 5 is totally going to see it.
