Lets see how many people change their tune on Michel Gondry and Seth Rogen’s The Green Hornet now. The film has been talked down quite a bit in some circles — every time we run an article on the movie the same string of comments pops up about how Rogen shouldn’t be playing a superhero, how there’s no interest in the film, etc. Which seems crazy to me since, if nothing else, this is Michel Gondry making a superhero movie. And now, it’s him making one with what could be an amazing bad guy.

Nikki Finke reports that Christoph Waltz, who impressed just about everyone who saw his turn as Nazi Col. Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds, has been cast as the villain Chudnofsky. Variety had previously described the role as an “intimidating gangster….who tangles with the Green Hornet.” Waltz makes a more than fitting replacement for Nicolas Cage, who had been circling the role, but never actually signed on.

This is all I need to be fully excited for the movie. Waltz’s performance was good enough to earn the Best Actor nod at Cannes this year, and both times I’ve seen Basterds I found him to be amazingly captivating. If Gondry can get the same energy level, and hopefully a very different performance, out of Waltz, The Green Hornet could be a great time.

The film is shooting now from a script by Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Rogen is Britt Reid / The Green Hornet, Cameron Diaz is a reporter and love interest, and Jay Chou is the martial artist and Hornet sidekick Kato. Edward James Olmos and Tom Wilkinson are also in the cast. The film will be released in December of 2010, and we may not see much actual footage until next year’s Comic Con, which Rogen has said he’ll attend to promote the film.

  • Hells, yeah! I'm on board with this.
  • richCie
can't he find himself a role in a film that might even be halfway interesting?
  • kid66
Can we stop allowing Cameron Diaz to be in movies?
  • bonchampion
I was just imagining how bad her acting will look against greats like Wilkinson, Olmos, and Waltz. I shudder at the thought.
  • Enthropii
Lol. Don't be too worried about Diaz. You havent seen the horror that is Jay Chou yet.
  • Octoberist
what a huge upgrade from Cage.
  • BrendonConnelly
I love Cage, I loved Waltz in Basterds even more. Beautiful.
  • Christoph.

    You're so naiive
  • This is the best news I've heard all day, possibly the best news for the entire week.
  • ScanCase
Wow! I'm finally really interested in this project. I think everyone can agree that Christopher Waltz is on everyone's must watch list.
  • MarkoP
I'll say this. Even if this movie is a terrible flop, it definitely looks like it'll be an INTERESTING terrible flop. Much like how Speed Racer was. And I'd take that over something boring and generic. Anything Gondry does interests me, even if he's only actually directed one good movie, a few so so ones, and a few terrible ones.

I do worry though that Christoph Waltz might get typecast as villains now and hope that this character is different enough from Hanz Landa.
  • jonathanh
I'm not sure if I like this as his next role or not, but I can assure you it won't be anything like his Hans Landa role, simply because QT didn't write it.
  • Thrilled to see Waltz reprise a villain role, and very excited to see Gondry tackle superheroes.

Cautiously optimistic about Rogen's involvement as an actor. Ever since Freaks & Geeks I've held a candle for him... but at the same, acting a superhero? Hopefully he can shake out the signature snarky expressions and inflections that makes it seem like he's playing the same character in every film. If anyone can direct him into a wildly different role than he's been typecast for, it's Gondry (think Carrey in Eternal Sunshine). Could be great!
  • Hopefully he still gets to flex his acting muscles in this. Something tells me it won't quite have the artistry or flamboyant flexibility of a Tarantino effort. Nice to see him getting American paychecks, though!
  • yes11
Great. Its taken him less than six months to become a shitty hollywood villain. All this is going to do is water down his turn in Inglourious Basterds. They might as well cast him as a Bond villain already.
  • While I would like him to do non villain stuff I would love to see him as a Bond villain.
  • starscream9289
    IT'S A BINGO!
  • This is exactly the opposite of what I consider good news.

This movie's gonna be bad and no amount of names they slap on it will change that.

And I think Green Hornet set a world record for fastest impulse typecast
  • Ashitaka
For all the characters, or just Waltz? Seth Rogen would not be impulsive for a superhero role. At least it isn't Shooter McGavin as the villain - remember in the late 90s when he played every villain in a comedy? That won't be Waltz, because the guy has more than one layer.
  • Wouldn't you try to go after someone as good as Waltz if you just lost your lead villain a few days ago and production has already started? I mean who would you want for this other than Waltz?
  • I just would shut down the retarded movie
  • That's obviously not going to happen, not now anyway.
  • Octoberist
thanks for having faith, man. at least wait until there's a trailer to completely write it off.
  • Bro I never had to wait for a Transformers 2 trailer, or a GI Joe trailer or a fucking Land of the Lost trailer. I know all these movies are going to be shit and I know why they're going to be shit.

Just how I knew Hazards of Love would be brilliant.
  • So you guessed right. Well I know that Incepetion, Black Swan and John Carter of Mars are going to rock. Might as well make me a producer right now.
  • Vegabro must truly have "the touch". Tell us oh wise one, what films we SHOULD look forward to over the coming years. And I'd like to apologise on behalf of anyone who was actually looking forward to The Green Hornet (or at the very least, to have an interest in it). I understand now that we were really really stupid. Only someone with immense wisdom and "the touch" could have predicted the immense shittiness of GI Joe. We're not worthy!!!
  • For some reason I can't respond to either of you, but let me just say you both missed the point
  • plagueoftruth
It's easy to look back on the movies that sucked this year and say that you "knew" they would suck. My guess is that there are plenty of films that you declared would suck that ended up being pretty good. But you don't talk about those, do you? You want to seem like you have some kind of inside knowledge.

Here's a suggestion: Instead of saying "this movie's gonna suck" try saying "I don't think this looks good" or "I'm not that interested."
You'll sound like less of a douchebag.
  • Here's a suggestion...I'm...a douchebag
  • em
get the fuck rid of cameron diaz
    she is terrible
  • Ashitaka
    @ Captain Howdy

QT isn't about the "artistry," more about the flamboyant flexibility and writing. In terms of pure artistry, Eternal Sunshine > all QT films. That doesn't mean that it's a better film, just more artistically original, which may be owed to the CK screenplay. Science of Sleep wasn't bad, but maybe that was TOO much art and not enough film.
  • bhsbrennan04
I just hope Christoph Waltz doesn't just turn into one of those actor's that does every little thing that is offered at him.
  • I still don't understand everyone's hate towards this movie. Yes, I agree that Seth Rogen might not be the best to play the Hornet. But this is Michel Gondry, and the man is pure talent. I love his music videos and LOVE Eternal Sunshine. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see Be Kind Rewind and it is still on my Netflix queue, but the man does have talent. If anyone can make this movie work, he can. Save all the hate for the trailer.
  • Name
if you've seen Be Kind Rewind you would understand.

But anyway, I don't think much of the hate has anything to do with Michel Gondry. He is a great director. He is not a good writer though. He has good ideas but needs someone with talent to execute it for him. But I have no idea how much he has to do with the script in this movie.
  • I get the feeling that Waltz is about to break into mainstream Hollywood. This can only possibly be a good thing after his performance in Basterds.
  • definitely looking forward to GH now
  • teddy123
If this move turns into a success and Waltz gives a stellar performance... what does that say about Nic Cage? Didn't he drop out of the Wrestler and was replaced by Mickey Rourke, who was nominated for an Academy Award? Now, Christoph Waltz could come in a give another great performance... and Cage is accepting roles such as G-Force? He's another big paycheck away from Face Off II
  • e_dog
What more need be said about Nic Cage? His resume for the past 15 years is basically "Adaptation" island in a sea of unwatchability.
  • Hell to the f*ck yes - so extremely excited for this. I love him :D !!! AHHH

He just got me excited for this movie. I'll be watching it for his performance, and thus far (as far as I can tell) for nothing else.
  • Is tis good news? Yes, but they have a hell of a time getting this far so I still have some trepidation.
  • "So you guessed right. Well I know that Incepetion, Black Swan and John Carter of Mars are going to rock. Might as well make me a producer right now."

Had to LIKE this comment. That guy obviously hates anything Green Hornet. I guess if it turns out to be awesome, he won't be the smartest person alive anymore.
  • Don't you hate the 4 deep reply limit? Yo Peter, is it in your power to change that?
  • enzomoran
See! Now I want to see this film.
