Star Tours 2 Trailer

star_tours

If there’s one medium guaranteed to lop the arms and legs off of footage from a 3D simulator ride, it’s YouTube. Having said that, we couldn’t all be at D23 for the big unveiling of their new Disney themepark attractions, so lets be thankful that we’re getting to see the Star Tours II trailer online at all, and better still, when it isn’t bootlegged handicam footage but an official upload.

Peter first reported on the Star Tours revamp back in May, rounding up a good deal of info on what we can expect from it, most of which still hasn’t been officially revealed. The juicy bits of his report will follow the break, along with the trailer itself.

Here’s what Peter had to tell us about the ride a few months back:

[The] revamp will incorporate prequel characters (like Naboo citizens and Geonosians) along with many aliens from the original trilogy (Aqualish. Bith, Rodians, etc). In the action sequence, the Star Tours vehicle is now going to be chased by Boba Fett.  C3PO and R2-D2 are still the hosts… Admiral Ackbar holographically communicates with the Star Tours vehicle. Right now they’re shooting mostly green screen footage, as it is the middle part of the production timeline.

Not much of that to see in this clip, however. What we get here looks like a super-souped up version of the old Phantom Menace podracing video games. Imagine watching this through a pair of 3D specs and in a rumbly, tumbly motorised box for a moment, maybe even with a fan blowing in your face, and I’m sure you’ll come closer to full effect intended.

Another note in Peter’s report said:

It’s not the total podracer reboot that was rumored a few years back, thank God. I’m hearing that its essentially the same ride but updated. It sounds to me like they might be shooting the footage in 3D, but I’m not sure.

Looks now like there was something to those podrace rumors after all, so we’ll have our thanks back, please God. The 3D part has definitely been borne out though.

The ride will launch at the Californian and Floridian Disney parks in 2011.

Here's to hoping they smooth out the ride a bit, a little closer to what the Spider-Man ride at Universal's Islands of Adventure in Orlando is like. The current ride, at least the one in Orlando's Hollywood Studios, feels like you are about to break your neck at times.
  • Chris
Somewhat off-topic, but does anyone know what happens to Marvel's Islands Of Adventure theme park in Universal now that Disney too over?
  • existenz
Universal retains the rights to use those Marvel characters in perpetuity. Disney would have to buy out the contracts to shut down those attractions and characters.
  • presto117
that would REALLY hurt islands of adventure. Well, the Harry Potter world is gonna make them money, but still. that was my favorite part of the park when i went a few years ago, but since i live in Orange county and just repurchased an annual pass, i would really like to disney to open a couple marvel rides or bring those characters to D-land, islands of adventure.
  • Is it just me, or was that "trailer" incredibly boring?
  • Name
This looks terrible! If this is just an Episode 1 podrace they've effectively ruined one of the best experiences at Disneyland.
  • Truecoat
From what I have gathered at other websites, there will be 25 beginnings, middles, and ends. This will generate thousands of possible rides and should be pretty good. I assume the pod racing will only be part of the story.
  • padme
when ur done crying about how terrible you think the ride looks, do a little research and you'll find it is not just podracing.
  • Kapit
Cool! I can't wait to see the whole thing in action!
  • rpk
Can they just forget that the prequels were ever made and just redo the star tours based on the original trilogy?
  • DrBathroomMD
Not everyone hated the prequels like you seem to think. The general public enjoyed them just fine, especially it's target audiance(oh but they dont know any better right?). They don't give a shit what one fanboy on the internet thinks.
  • padme
the prequels rock!!!!!! i love both trilogies.
  • imonwelfare
I saw the shakycam footage. It's better than seeing this trailer by itself, because storm troopers and darth vader are involved in the event of presenting the actual trailer. But even after all that it's still... pod racing... blegh.
  • The good folks making Star Tours 2 seem to be operating under the mistaken impression that people actually liked the prequels...
  • DrBathroomMD
People generally did like the prequels so...
  • padme
    >:( the prequels were a w e s o m e. you and many other people need to open your mind to new things. and idk what statistics you've been reading, but according to mine, MILLIONS OF PEOPLE LOVED THE PREQUELS,according to movie and dvd sales.
  • It's about time they update that ride! It's been sitting in its own old-school style at Disneyland for 20 years now. Geez! That's a long time.
  • vva
Kids love the prequels. This is for a whole new generation. The original Star Tours was great... for the 80's. It's time for an update. And people complaining about this are just out to complain about anything it seems. We haven't seen anything worth commenting one way or the other.
  • Guest
A bad film is a bad film. Simple as. No self-respecting film fan would try to defend the prequels. That an old favourite is being updated to include elements from these films is worth commenting upon.
  • Ed P.
I like the prequels. No they aren't IV or V, but still entertaining and very good in parts. Gotta look beyond the film and into the script, technological advancements and understand the perspective of the director before you can really say the prequels suck. Some of the stuff in the prequels, particularly 1 and 2 were quite revolutionary - even though the content and acting was off par.
  • existenz
Revolutionary? The prequels have some of the worst green screen I've ever seen, let's not get started on Jar Jar, and the CGI all looked pretty fake, like a cartoon or a video game. And you bring up the script? The script for Phantom Menace was horrible, the other two were only slightly better.
  • vva
Oh.. please. I'm a self-respecting film fan I thought Episode III was better than Return of the Jedi and third only to the first two originals. People need to grow up with this weird hate. They're only movies.. and a lot better than most of the shit people seem to go gaga over.
  • Guest
It's not hate, and it's not something that will change upon growing up. The prequels have barely any wars (negating the reason for the series title), bad acting from otherwise good actors, and unconvincing CGI which is always up on screen. Backstory's backstory for a reason, it doesn't need to be seen, just implied. The prequels are completely superfluous.
  • Well I for one think Episode III is great. But I'm so sorry, I like the movies. I don't respect myself anymore... thanks for telling me my opinion Name!
  • patrick
I loved Episode III as well. I really think it is the third best SW film behind Empire and A New Hope. I never really jumped on the Lucas-hating bandwagon, though I'll admit I don't care much for I and II but they do have their fun moments.

And if anyone actually read the article, it looks like it's not going to be all about podracing.
  • padme
they were not bad. in my opinion, you have set your expectations wayyyy too high. you say 4,5, and 6 and set expectations impossibly high. i am guessing you saw originals when you were a kid. now that you've grown up, you, according to your messages, do not like the newer movies. star wars are movies not only for adults, but also for kids. this was true in 1977 and its true now.
  • presto117
agreed. i just renewed my disneyland pass after a year of not having one and have been on the ride at least 3 times in the past week, and, well.... i'm starting to see the flaws. sure, the fx are great for the time period, but it's a little short, the transitions are a little "meh" (if you pay attentnion, actually barely pay attention, you can see an obvious cut between when the cruiser approaches the comet and when it enters the comet) and a few other things. i think the new ride can do pod racing as long as it's not exactly like how it was in episode 1 (like how ST now basically just does the death star scene) and the boba fett (jango?) chase would be really fun, too. people need to grow up and give this a chance.
  • bttokar
I can always count on coming to these boards to find people ALWAYS jumping to conclusions based on minimal footage. How about just reserving complaints until you actually ride the completed ride instead of instantly ripping on the thing?
  • Guest
Bad films are bad films. Simple as. We have seen that the new ride is going to incorporate elelments from the prequels, which no self-respecting film fan would try to defend. That they're updating the ride to include inferior work is worth commenting upon.
  • Did you just rip off Name's comment?
  • Ed P.
Now, if they do what the initial vision called for there would be several different versions of the ride (including the original, restored and remastered) we'd journey through Hoth (Echo Base), Endor, Camino and some podracing.
  • My favorite part of the original Star Tours ride was that I actually felt like I was in a space cruiser. I don't know how they're going to keep the realism factor alive with a podracing setting but I hope they pull it off. Also, I hope that it's not just podracing. I loved the flight through space from the original and hope that it hasn't disappeared. It just doesn't look like a very good simulation to me with the footage shown.
  • existenz
I wouldn't mind the podracing if the ride also includes a flight through outer space and maybe a return to the Death Star. What would really be cool is the use of tactile effects (hot air blowing in your face during the pod-race, cool air as you fly over Hoth, etc.) combined with the movement and 3-D. Adding in scent would be even better but is probably too much of a nightmare to pull off.
  • Disney's California Adventure has used scent in "Soaring through CA," therefore, I think it's a possibility. Hopefully they'll put in everything you wrote and more.
  • scott
I am a self-respecting film fan and i love the prequels, warts and all! But I won't try defending it to a bunch of trolls who mistakenly believe that their opinions are facts. I'd gladly discuss or debate it with anyone else though.
  • dpod
if i see jar jar binks anywhere, im never going to disneyland again
  • James
Meesa think this looks like shit.
  • dangeer
Why is it that this had to turn into a prequel vs old trilogy debate? Who cares if you liked them or not? This is about Star Tours 2. Will it, or will it not deliver? I think it will, regardless of whether or not it includes prequel stuff. Most people agree that the action in the prequels is top notch, even if they didn't like the films. Why not have it in the ride as well? Just don't throw out the main things that made the original ride fun. I, for one, would love to sit in the belly of a pod racer!
  • scott
Sorry dangeer, i got carried away up there. Just know that i too would love to sit in a pod-racer!! Updating this seems like a given really, cant remember the original too well but im sure it could use the overhaul.
  • toho
that would be cool as shit, and you all know it. A ride that changes each time, from a visual perspective? Awesome. And it's something most of us have deep passions for, one way or another. Bravo. Star Tours is dated....George Lucas is not designing Star Tours 2, just inspiring it.

This really makes me want to go to Disney again.
  • Joe
What the presentation left out from D23 Expo, each simulator will have its own adventure, the only down fall that I get from the revamp, there "re-using" the current simulators =(

They should really bulldoze the entire Tomorrowland and really give an all around future "tomorrow" land. That's wishful thinking though.
  • 88fingerz
If there's one thing that Disney doesn't do in its rides....it's disappoint. I think even if things seem like they might be somewhat sub-par....we can have a good deal of faith that they'll have plenty of surprises in this ride.
  • hhghg
    looks ultra ultra cheddar
  • hhghg
smooth edit entering the comet rules by the way
  • TheFutureIsBright
Some people can't embrace change! The prequel trilogies rocked just as much as the original. If you wanna live in the past then don't go on the new ride!
