Must-Watch: US Antichrist Trailer

antichrist_us_trailer

I almost didn’t post this, because we’ve run a few clips and/or trailer from Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist already. But goddamn, this is a hell of a trailer. For one, it is in HD Quicktime, and while I’ve understood previously that the movie has some great imagery, this presentation suggests that it might be a really genuinely beautiful film. Furthermore, this trailer is genuinely scary. It hints at the classic effect of the original Alien and The Shining trailers for inspiring fear. No small feat. Check it out after the break.

Apple has the trailer in HD. (I’ve embedded a YouTube version below, but really suggest checking out the HD version.) My only complaint about the way this one is assembled is that there is a too-heavy reliance on quotes from press out of Cannes. But the actual images are increibly gorgeous. Antichrist was shot by Slumdog Millionaire cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (who has worked with both Danny Boyle and Lars Von Trier many times before) and it seems like he’s really outdone himself.

Antichrist was one of the first films to play for press last week at the Toronto International Film Festival. While the Cannes reaction to the movie was fairly unified (shocking, provocative, but not necessarily good) the TIFF reviews have been more interesting. Not that they’re any less divided than those that came out back in May, but critics seeing the film now, prepped for how insane the experience might be, are having some reactions that are less overcome by shock and disgust. Some are much more impressed with Von Trier’s filmmaking. Movieline is calling it an instant classic, and the always thoughtful Roger Ebert has been scrutinizing his own reaction to the film. He’s probably said it best, no surprise:

Do I believe his film “works?” Would I “recommend” it? Is it a “good” film? I believe von Trier doesn’t care how I or anyone else would reply to those questions. He had the ideas and feelings, he saw into the pit, he made the film, and here it is.

That's quite an intense trailer. Willem Dafoe being crazy is always interesting to see.
  • Did you watch the trailer? Willem Dafoe isn't the crazy one.

Peter - it is a very, very beautiful film. Amazing images, gorgeous shots of the lush forest.

WHOA! Quite gnarly. The images look beautiful. Makes me wanna not go into the woods with Willem Dafoe. Doesn't she know he's the green goblin!?
  • Yeah, but he's also Jesus, so that should balance it out.

This trailer is going to give me nightmares! I better leave out some chocolate-chip cookies and milk for Satan.
  • wazuu
Whoa, this was pretty creepy. I wanted to make a joke about bush since she's naked and they're in the forest, but whatever.
  • I assume that's the redband trailer. Why would there even be a greenband trailer? That really would be utterly pointless. Imagine seeing an Antichrist trailer before Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

On second thought, I'm going to watch this. I might be disturbed for the rest of my life, go into shock, or vomit more than Gary in Team America, but I'm going to watch it.

beautiful film. I'm just disappointing because of all the discussion around about what happens - I knew nothing going in and very grateful for that.

anyone know if there is a release date set yet? id almost prefer a dvd release. seems like this would be scarier home alone than in a theater.

Saw the film a month ago. It's a film that will split audiences-I adored it but 4 other people I went to see it with hated it. I think the hype doesn't help it.This is not a traditional horror film and a lot of it is very slow and, for the majority, it is not a scary in a jump out of your seat way film.
It is beautiful and it's horror comes from the atmosphere it creates. All the way through there is a feeling that something is really wrong in Eden and the woods itself are evil.
Saw this in a small cinema, and just before one of the mutilation scenes, you could hear the entire audience taking in a deep breath i preparation.
Fantastic film, just don't go in expect a jump-filled rollercoaster with all loose ends tied up, it's a much more dark, depressing, atmospheric horror film.

one of the worst movies ive ever seen
  • This definetely will be a great film. I'm excited because I'm not quite sure how to classify it. I have a feeling it will be on peoples top 10 lists but won't make it to the Oscars.

I think I might be too old for this sort of cerebral wackiness.
  • chrad
    Too old? Huh?
What do you think is appropriate for someone your age? Fantastic Four?
  • Too old to think?

I saw this a few weeks ago. I thought it was beautifully shot and a very solid film. It certainly isn't for everyone.
  • Holy shit! This is the first I have heard of or seen anything about this. Looks absolutely brilliant. *Adds to top of looking-forward-to list.*

    Where have you been hiding?
  • I know, right? I have no idea how I missed this. But I'm kinda glad I did. Don't have to wait so long now :)

Ive watched this film twice now. I dont know yet about how I feel about the movie. It was haunting yet beautiful, and the images and scenery were absolutely gorgeous. But there were times that I was like WTF?? All in all its a great movie, even if I cant give you an honest answer on how I feel about it.

when does this come out in the US?
  • Yeah, good luck getting a US theatrical release for this.

The more I see of this the more I like it.
