The world’s most A-grade B-actor, Bruce Campbell, was stopped at the red carpet premiere of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and pressed for details on the upcoming Spider-Man 4. Seeing as he’s had a role in each of the three Sam Raimi Spidey pictures so far it wasn’t too much of a stretch to assume he’d be on the call sheet for the next go around too. Not only did he confirm that, he also claimed a January start date for the project. But what could he reveal about his appearance in theĀ film?

According to the info garnered by Access Hollywood, Campbell is expecting his role in the next film to be “a major part.” Of course, they translated this in their headline to there being a “villainous role in the works” for the actor, despite the absolute lack of evidence to support this supposition.

It’s just about possible that Campbell has been playing the same character in each of the films so far, one guy who just doesn’t seem able to hold down a job. Explicitly revealing that could be a fun quirk. Or maybe they could hold that off until the fifth installment, already rumored to be at the basic planning stages.

Campbell’s little roles in the series have turned out to be rather important to the overall narrative - from giving Spider-Man his “mask name” to creating serious tension in the Peter-MJ romance or, last time around, facilitating Peter’s wedding proposal, if in a slightly embarrassing manner. Perhaps this kind of significance is all Campbell meant by major, and he knew he could pull a few legs and start a wave of speculation with his use of the term yet still justify it later? I wouldn’t be surprised. But then, I wouldn’t be surprised if his comment was based on nothing at all. What would surprise me, if pleasantly, would Bruce Campbell actually taking one of the lead roles in the film.

A whole host of talented writers have taken a pass at the Spider-Man 4 screenplay and Raimi swears that the lessons of part 3 have been learned (hopefully this means that Avi Arad has been chained up in the dungeon with Sean McNamara and their Robosapien) so I guess I’m back to full on optimism.

I don`t think this is a good idea. You can`t just rush to know who you`re choosing to play a villain you`d like to cast.

im not sure if any body was watching the same spiderman films as me but the first was absolute garbage-nothing happened, the second was good but the third movie was quality, i dont know why everybody seems to hate it when it was easily the best of the series up to now but i can't wait for the fourth. 2011 cant come quickly enough!!!!

For all we know he could be the minster officiating at Peter Parker's wedding - how's that for significant?
  • BRUCE CAMPBELL WILL BE THE CHAMELEON!

if those characters happened to all be the same person it would all add up!!

    1. they have all shown incredible interest in spiderman/peter parker's personal life and

    2. it would have shown the character's unrelenting fascination with acting out different people - very specific people.

i love the spider-man trilogy and i hope 4 is awesome and with bruce with a bigger role that has to be awesome i hope he is a deadly villian.

I really need to revisit X2, everyone says it's a great film and I remember it to be awful.

It actually angers me that people think this raimi guy is anywhere near competent. Hes moronic, at best. The spiderman series has been a mess. None of them were good. Not one good action sequence in the whole "trilogy". Maybe this one they'll dump the super hero thing and just go straight romance. Cause thats what they apparently want. Actually just make the whole movie about mary jane. Spiderman 2 sucked and sam raimis gay. I mean evil dead are known for being crappy movies. They spent more than 250 mil on the last one and the effects were not that good nor the dialgue or acting. Id say the best thing about that movie was that it was at least in focus.

Ever see "The Gift" or maybe "A Simple Plan?"

These are not moronic by my or many other's standards.
  • joebbb
I feel as if you just helped my argument. The gift was horrendous and predictable. With a terrible cast to boot. I cannot judge simple plan at this time.

    for i havent seen it

Well it can be said that Raimi has not done a good job with the spiderman movies, you cannot call him incompetent just from these movies. He proved himself to be an excellent director all the way back in the 80s with the Evil Dead series, and has made many other good films since then. Don't be so quick to judge
  • joebbb
Alls Im saying is the spidey movies were a product of tasteless executives helmed by a director with lack luster skills. Lame cameos, sub par action, poor cinematography, and unfunny comedy. I put this man on the same level with Micheal bay.

"evil dead are known for being crappy movies"

In what universe? The only time you ever hear complaints about those series is from people who don't like horror (which is understandable to a degree) and idiots who can't understand good film. I could name 5 or 6 awesome action scenes from the Spiderman trilogy and I'm sure you'd B.S. some reason why they "suck," but ultimately I don't even care. You called Sam Raimi gay. On slashfilm you called Sam Raimi Gay. How fucking old are you? 12? Are you actually a fucking homophobe or do you "just mean lame" or some bullshit? you wanna talk some movies, feel free. You want to be an immature homophobic screen-dummy, why don't you just keep it in gym class.

Look at the third evil dead. Thats not campy? Thats what the series is based on. Compare the horror in the shining and exorcist to the first evil dead. I think its common knowledge the evil dead movies are corny. Which is ok. Gaysa bit harsh you got me their. But please compare dark knight or iron man to any spidey flick and you can see how amateur that guy really is. Look at his decisions on venom. The last act of spiderman 3 is a mess. All the exposition from the news caster to tell us mary jane has been captured in a giant web? Huh? The green goblin is very corny. Go back and actually watch it. Dafoe gave a horrible performance. It fits perfectly with the villians from the 60's batman. Theres not a single memorable or iconic shot in the whole series. No lines to quote. Nothing that made its way into pop culture. Except the great powers line. But thats cause it was made of fun. Name an action scene I will go back watch it dissect it. When peter saved the people on the subway is when I left the theatre in 2. When did spiderman use his powers to do that. Clearly some hollywood writer's dumb idea. And all the people promise to keep quite. Suddenly it turned into some disney movie. Thats pure hollywood crap right there. Over dramatized reality. See I didnt use "gay" this whole rebutle.

"Look at the third evil dead. Thats not campy?" It sure is. You said Crappy on that first post. Make up your mind, because the two are not synonymous.

"Compare the horror in the shining and exorcist to the first evil dead." So I shouldn't like Bananas because they taste more fun than Apples?

"But please compare dark knight or iron man to any spidey flick and you can see how amateur that guy really is" Spiderman 2 is better than Iron Man in my opinion. But even if it wasn't, that's like saying Casablanca's better than Wayne's World. It definitely is, but Wayne's World kicks some ass.

"Look at his decisions on venom. The last act of spiderman 3 is a mess" Venom wasn't his decision, it was Avi Arad's. That's what that last paragraph is aboot in the article. And yes, that whole last movie was a mess. No argument there. Once again though, Avi Arad forced Venom on him. Sam wanted to make the movie about Sandman and Harry.

"The green goblin is very corny" Have you READ the comics??? (and believe me, I'm a fan, but you're pretty naive if you don't think the whole concept of a costumed hero is corny)

"Theres not a single memorable or iconic shot in the whole series" Oh yeah. In ten years NO ONE's gonna remember the upside down kiss

"Name an action scene I will go back watch it dissect it" Then I won't even bother. You're ability to BS is meaningless

"And all the people promise to keep quite." Well he did just save their lives. stuff like that happens to Spidey in the comics quite often actually.

"See I didnt use "gay" this whole rebutle." Well bully for you...

joebbb says : "But thats cause it was made of fun."
even though i'm sure you didn't mean to say this, it was the only time i agreed with you. as far as the evil dead movies...they are intentionally and self-consciously corny/campy (duh!??!) and they are wonderful.

joebbb also says: "When peter saved the people on the subway is when I left the theatre in 2. When did spiderman use his powers to do that."
errrr, umm, like, since spider-man was ever created he has been using his powers to save people. you know, the great power great responsibility thing yadda yadda yadda....are you for real joebbbb? cuz if so, you are too cute for words.

    Troll much?
  • I wonder if the stench of Spiderman 3 can be removed for as successful 4th installment? No doubt it will make a bucket-load of cash. But will it be worth the watch?
  • neuroticmonkey
When doing press for Spiderman 2, Bruce Campbell also said he was "the one that stops Spiderman." Of course, referring to the fact that he turns away Peter Parker from the theater. So, I'm guessing this is just Bruce Campbell making a joke and he'll be a giant fat guy or something.

Of course, i'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised and see him as Mysterio.
  • MickJ
Would love to see Marvel get their hands back on Spidey, as it should be. Some day.
  • mikeson
The big reveal should be that he's Mysterio.
  • [A]
I call it BS. Not the 'bigger part for him' part but the 'shooting starts in january' part..
  • He's Mysterio.
First off, he gave Spidey a name. Weeks later, he saw it all over the news and the papers. He was obviously angry he never saw a dime. He then quit his job for the low paycheck and went on to usher in an off-broadway theatre.
He recognized Peter, and sort of put him down. He wasn't happy with that.
He was fired from there, and went on to work as a Matiere'D, where, again, recognized Peter, and sent in Gwen to their table, with hilarious dramatic results.

    All according to plan.
BUT!! He wasn't happy. Once working as a failed actor and special effects man, he decided to go up as a villain for spiderman. A very theatrical villain, who's probably going to do as much money as the trademark for the "Spiderman" name would've gotten him.

I mean-- I can't believe it. My friends joked about this story months ago. I'd be surprised if it was even considered.
  • Maybe he was being sarcastic and AH just didn't pick up on it.

Would love to see him in a major part though. ;)

I'm actually looking forward to a 4th spidey despite the 3rd one. I think Sam Raimi knew he messed up the 3rd one, even though it wasn't entirely his fault. I definitely think he can make a good movie and hope we get another cool Spidey film.
  • Dr_Gonzo
I'm sure Sam Raimi would not be involved in a 4th film unless he had enough control and could make the movie that HE wants. I didn't hate Spidey 3 but I think it was ruined because of it's over ambition and poor script. As things stand Spidey 2 is still my favourite comic movie closely followed by X2 then Iron Man. I have no doubt that Raimi can deliver another fantastic Spidey movie. As for Bruce, he's great n all but a lead role? no no no.
  • lipslikeasukal
Finally, someone else who's put Spider-man 2 at the number one spot. But why no Batman Begins or Dark Knight?
  • lipslikeasukal
Whoa, now! Okay I love Spider-man 2, but I also love Batman Begins (for a time, and maybe even now, I considered BB better than TDK-- probably due to my bad opening night experience for TDK).

I don't really have a top five. I'm not a big fan of Hellboy, though I like Del Toro's works. If I had to I'd say 1-Spider-man 1 2- (tie, sorta) Batman Begins and The Dark Knight 4- Spider-man 1 5- X-men (because it started it all for me)

Also, I never hated Superman Returns. If I remember correctly, I enjoyed it.
  • Dr_Gonzo
Don't get me wrong, I liked Begins and I liked TDK even more but for me they were both far too long. By the end of both movies I just felt drained and I almost stopped caring a little bit. They were both overcooked imo and TDk was way over-hyped. SM2 was perfect in every way for me, running time was perfect, story, script, plus it was packed with beautiful little Raimi signatures like the operating room scene and amazing set pieces like Spidey stopping the train and the finale.

What would you say are the top 5 superhero films?
  • BrendonConnelly
I agree that Spider-Man 2 is the greatest superhero film ever made. I also love Hellboy 2 and Superman Returns, but probably not in the 2) and 3) slots...
  • Guest
Batman Begins and The Dark Knight aren't to everyones taste. Agreed, Spiderman 2 is by far the best superhero film ever made, along with Hellboy II and Superman Returns.
  • Rockie
i like the spidey trilogy warts and all

    bring on the bruce
  • The only reason why I can tolerate or even like the Spider-Man Movies, is because of BRUCE CAMPBELL and Sam Raimi. Oh yes.. Fan Boy I am.
