A Christmas Carol Trailer and Premiere News

christmas_carol_new_still

The online teaser trailer for Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey’s new 3D, performance captured movie of A Christmas Carol has finally, finally gone live. We’ve had in-cinema chances to see a shorter trailer for this film for a couple of months now, and there’s even been a lesser-spotted TV ad hopping around of late but, for some reason that I’ll probably never agree with, even if I can fathom it out, there’s not been an official trailer released on the internet until now.

Check this trailer out after the break, as well as finding out about the film’s World Premiere, which is set to be open to the public as well as the typical VIPs.

I’ll preface my next comment by saying that I’m mad keen to see this film and am absolutely convinced it’s going to be a doozy, but… well…

Just as it seemed like Zemeckis was hiking back up the hillside out of Uncanny Valley, along comes The Ghost of Christmas Past who almost looks too realistic. Or perhaps I’m just unnerved by this particular spectre’s likeness to the Teletubbies’ sun-baby? Whatever it is, he feels like a new kind of creepy for these motion capture pictures. It will take me a few more watches to get used to this character I think.

You’ll probably have noticed how heavily the trailer plays to the 3D component of the film, with a great deal of flying off into the screen under and around things. Of course, this all seems to come from the same sequence in the film, so we needn’t expect the whole movie to feel like a themepark ride.

The final close up of Scrooge was particularly impressive, I think. I don’t know how much of that was recorded from Carrey’s performance or how much of it was keyframe animation, but either way the end result was very exciting. In 3D and 50 feet tall it’s bound to be even more so.

Should you want to attend the World Premiere of the film, the details have been announced by… er… by Boris Johnson? The Mayor of London? The most head-scratchingly eccentric of all Britons to currently hold any kind of public office? Yep. He was speaking in New York where he’s trying to promote the UK’s capital as a tourism destination for US holidaymakers. Here’s the deal on the premiere:

The World Premiere of Disney’s A Christmas Carol will then take place at three of London’s leading cinemas in Leicester Square creating the UK’s biggest ever 3D screening, where the stars of the film Jim Carrey, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, Bob Hoskins and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis will come together to greet guests and media from around the world. Tickets will be available for the public to take part in the world premiere which is in support of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

I’m in. Well… if I can get in.

Everyone keeps talking about how impressive and realistic the animation is. I'm still not sold. Am I alone?

Looks more realistic and impressive to me than anything I saw in the Avatar trailer...

It's all because you haven't seen it in 3D.

3 months later, you're eating those words.
  • muffin7
a few years later, you'll be eating those words, friend. Avatar sucked. It actually set cinema backwards. It is the worst movie I've seen all year, and just because it had pretty cool CG it's getting great reviews. That technology will be NOTHING in just a few years, and then what will Avatar be remembered for? It's story? LOL.

I'm not sure they're going for a 'realistic' look here, though. It's not Beowulf. It's supposed to look more broad and theatrical. That doesn't stop it from not looking impressive.
  • BrendonConnelly
I agree. But the face of 'Past'... that's 'too real' to my eyes, even if only by mistake.
  • mbellerbrock
Really?... I have to admit, the ghost is the one thing that looks horrible to me, looks like decent videogame graphics. The rest looks impressive in a cartoony but yet more realistically grounded way.

    Could be good, we'll see.

that last shot of Carrey is spectacular!!!
  • anthonyb
Yeah, have to agree that last shot of scrooge is a huge step up from Polar Express. also seems the eyes have now been de-zombiefied ;)
  • jank
I was there on avatar day and after seeing this trailer, I see now what everyone was saying about the cgi (for avatar) being nothing groundbreaking. it seems (to me at least) just as on-par with this movie - minus the hype. will I still enjoy both movies? I think so. revolution? I think not.
  • jason
are there people that want to see this movie
  • James
THAT'S!! how you make a trailer!!! looks stunning.
  • I for one am looking forward to this Movie. I am a huge fan of Robert Zemeckis and I believe that, he may successed with this movie.

When it comes to the Animation, I for one don't really care; although I will say it's a big improvement from The Polar Express.

I'll just go watch Scrooged again.
  • PalmliX
    Haha nice
  • So I excited for this. I saw the trailer originally when I watched Inglorious Bastards but it was great to see it a second time.... and a third... and a fourth.

I've always loved the story so that doesn't seem to be too much of a problem, also, I particularly like the designs of the three ghosts (even if we did only get to see them momentary).

The animations *is* realistic but not too realistic, I believe that it's degree of realism will add to the underlying weight of the movie.

One qualm thus far, Scrooge's speech mannerisms aren't to my liking, I hope that my mind changes by the time I go to watch it (or even while I watch it) because that just may be enough to pull me out of the movie (not out of the theatre, I just won't be entranced by it as I sometimes am by other movies)
  • Mr.F
    They still have zombie-eyes.
The Ghost of Christmas past is awful, seems a retarded version of Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast.
  • Peter R
Rather watch the Muppets Christmas Carol. After Michael Caine, Jim Carrey' silly accents and stupid faces just wont do in this classic holiday thriller.
  • JLocms
Seriously. Carrey's definitely evolved into a decent actor, but I cringed at his accent.
And, honestly, I still am not convinced of a point for motion capture as a technique for an entire film. It feels like something that'd be useful for maybe a couple characters where makeup, lighting and other traditional effects can't do what you want, but applied to a whole film just feels gimmicky.
  • dagreenman18
wow, Marley looks awful. Christmas present looks fine, Chritmas past looks meh, and Scrooge himself at least moves nicely, but Marley looks like a bad projection from the Haunted Mansion ride.
  • VelocityAtrocity
I have absolutely no interest in watching a Xmas movie in early November. If it's still out in 3D in early December, I might go see it. It doesn't look as bad as I thought, for a remake.
  • BlackManJew
It would be cool if it was live-action..
  • Do we really need to use technology to animate really old people? Isn't it much better put to use doing something like Final Fantasy?

I have no desire to see this. The face animation looks pretty good at the end but who cares? I'm not paying $15 to see a computer's rendition of an old man's face in three-d.
  • Always a fan of "the Christmas Carol" movies. And Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey in a Disney movie, now THERE'S something to see. I mean I know that Zemeckis did "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", but I thought that after the controversy behind it, it would've been awhile.
  • FreDre
Well, it looks like they didn't went for a total photo-realistic approach in this one.
The eyes are an improvement from Beowulf but the skin looks kinda fake (maybe it's artistic choice?).
But I enjoy the hell out of those Zemecki's mocap films, they have some fantastic shots and in 3D it's really beautiful.
Can't wait to see this, it will be a great appetizer for Avatar
  • Ian
Don't need a Disney Christmas Carol - I'll stick to Dickens thanks.
