FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE WALT DISNEY STUDIOS, THE BEATLES’ APPLE CORPS LTD. , AND OSCAR®-WINNING FILMMAKER ROBERT ZEMECKIS DIVE INTO NEW MAGICAL 3D ADAPTATION OF THE 1968 CLASSIC YELLOW SUBMARINE

Anaheim, California — September 11, 2009 — The Walt Disney Studios has made a deal with Apple Corps Ltd. to develop a new 3D performance capture adaptation of the 1968 hit animated film “Yellow Submarine” to be written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, it was announced today at the D23 Expo by Dick Cook, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. The film will be created by ImageMovers Digital, Disney’s state-of-the-art performance capture animation studio operated in conjunction with Zemeckis and his partners, Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey, who will serve as producers on the project.

For this fantastic new voyage to Pepperland, Zemeckis will incorporate the 16 Beatles songs and recordings from the original motion picture licensed from Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC and EMI-Capitol Records, respectively. The songs include “All Together Now,” “All You Need Is Love,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “With A Little Help From My Friends” while combining his unique vision and style to bring this dazzling tale to life.

In making the announcement, Cook said, “This is truly an inspired collaboration, and a wonderful opportunity to revisit one of the most imaginative and memorable musical fantasies of all time. To be working with the amazing folks at Apple Corps, and to have Bob helming the sub is truly as good as it gets. With all those incredible Beatles songs and imagery, the spectacular vision of Bob and his pioneering team at ImageMovers Digital, and a classic adventure full of wit and action, we’re sure that moviegoers are going to have a great time on this latest trip to Pepperland.”

Zemeckis said, “’Yellow Submarine’ is one of the greatest fantasy films of all time, and making this new 3D performance capture movie is a dream come true for me. With the latest advances in technology, we will be able to take moviegoers on a voyage unlike any other, and bring new excitement and dimension to Pepperland and the various sea worlds they encounter. I’m thrilled to be working with the good folks at Apple Corps and our partners at Disney on this epic retelling of one of my all time favorite films.”

Jeff Jones, CEO, Apple Corps Ltd., said, “With The Beatles and Walt Disney Studios, we have a partnership between two of the best loved creative entities in the world. We’re very excited about the magical fantasy that will result from this collaboration. The marriage of the music of The Beatles with the talent and technical wizardry of Robert Zemeckis and ImageMovers Digital should produce something very special. We look forward to working with Bob and his team on realising his new vision for ‘Yellow Submarine’”.

The original motion picture (released in the U.S. on November 13, 1968) based on the music of The Beatles was directed by George Dunning and featured the inspired art direction and design of Heinz Edelmann. The movie is set in Pepperland, an undersea paradise inhabited by music lovers who live in peace and harmony and are protected by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. That is…until they are threatened by the music hating Blue Meanies. It’s up to John, Paul, George and Ringo to set off on a magical adventure in their yellow submarine and bring music and harmony back to Pepperland.

I'm still waiting for a Beatles biopic.
  • BrendonConnelly
Backbeat gets that story started off very well. Nowhere Boy might make a nice prequel for the even earlier bits of Lennon's life.
  • tricky808
I'll see this. Hopefully it won't have polar express zombie eyes. I wonder what kind of animation style he will be going for?
  • The Walrus
don't see it. It will be a ripoff of a classic. If you watch it, it'll encourage Disney to make more ripoffs
  • hartman27
I read the news today...oh boy...
  • The Walrus
"oh boy is right". Disney is going to murder one of my favorite movies.
  • whsmith
    My headline:
Robert Zemeckis and Disney Join Forces to Rape the Beatles.

Not content with creating lifeless performance capture pieces no one cares about, Zemeckis sets out to fuck with a beloved property in hopes that someone will pay attention this time.
  • jonnyh
    why is this necessary??
  • I just don't know about this. ...I hope they're not trying to go for the hyper realistic look.
Go with Beatles Rock Band toons! They looked great!
  • tom
This will not only be terrible, but will not make any money. Zemeckis is still here, peddling his dead eyed mocap trash, while John Hughes lies a moulderin' in the grave. No justice.
  • The question is: Will the Disney 3D glasses work when you're stoned? If not, this movie isn't gonna work.
  • Kyle C.
Really? I think Zemeckis has officially jumped the shark. Now I'm not the biggest Beatles fan but even if I was I would still greet this news with a shrug.
  • Someone arrange a link on Google Maps as to the location we want Zemeckis strung up and I'll have it arranged. Hows about Abbey Road?
  • Hey, Robert Zemeckis, how about giving 3D a rest and coming back to making movies with REAL people? You know, the kind you used to make that were GREAT?
  • What are these REAL people you are speaking off?

    *Takes off 3-D glasses*

    Ahh! Life!

    *Puts them back on*

    Aww...peace.
  • johnlennon
stop trying to profit off the beatles...just listen to their music. and also Fuck Rock Band
  • johnlennon
stop trying to profit off the beatles...why change something that is already good? and also Fuck Rock Band seriously you guys
  • cinemactik
This is beyond insulting, it is just obscene. Yellow Submarine in not only a classic of animation, it is the best marriage of The Beatles music and storytelling. Nothing good will come of this.
  • RingoStarrLover
What the fuck is your problem!!!!!!!! you suck! you cannot remake the yellow submarine! its a classic. And whats the deal with the rock band! Leave the Beatles be exactly how they are now bitches!
  • Sketch
I'm actually excited about this. Well mainly if it's around the same style as the original. But even then if you seen the animations provided in the Beatles Rockband game which are pretty far out awesome, I think a film like Yellow Submarine can really be awesome as well.
  • Greatest fantasy film of all time? For the love of god, it was just a way to cash in on Beatles-Mania.
  • frelling_cute
Booo Hisss. Zemeckis needs to be stopped.
  • Meli_V
I cannot in any way be excited or even want to see this happen. Leave it alone and do something else - why a remake? Can you make it better? Um. No. Part of the beauty is the hand drawn animation. I don't need replications of motion captured Beatles....the fact two are no longer with us ...well, it's a little insulting. I'm aware they didn't voice themselves in the movie and only appeared in the end, but that is beside the point - at least they were all still living.
  • Rick
Oh no! It's gonna be creepier then the original!
  • Harrison and Steve
i like Bob but the mocap films forsome reason just didnt connect, save beowulf..
seriously, why not just do what the world really wants, BTTF 4? i mean what better way to help Mj Fox raise money for parkinson's research? come on already. it's a no brainer. call Gale and bang out a script..
  • Chad
Having tweenage "pop artists" cover "Hello Goodbye" and "Blackbird"? I can live with that.

Remaking "Yellow Submarine" into a 3D motion-capture film? That is going WAY too far.
  • Gerrick Mack
If ringo, paul and apple crops signed on for it then you guys should stop bitching about leaving the beatles be.

This is a great way to give this crappy age of miley cyrus and garbage nu-metal a fresh look at what real music and storytelling is. and give grown ups something to reminisce about
  • klownfist
Amen to that Gerrick... I certainly am NOT going to condemn this project until I see it for myself. I just don't get what all the backlash is about. Everyone is totally thinking the worst instead of realizing that we have some of the most brilliant minds at work here(Hello... The Beatles and Disney together...) and you know damn well that if Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia signed on to this then they are going to have a hand in it as well which will be a good thing. They're not going to let anyone just release something that doesn't hold up to the Beatles legend. Look at everything in the past 10 years that came out with the Beatles personal guidance, Circe de Soliel and The Love Soundtrack, the remasters, Rock Band, etc... Everything they put their stamp of approval on has been nothing short of brilliance. Especially with how protective they are with the Beatle name. So I believe alot of integrity is going to happen here. And you would have to be a dummy to think for one minute that Zemeckis isn't going to be handling this one with kid gloves. For he realizes how beloved the original movie is and he has stated many times himself how much he loves the 1968 film and is a true fan of it. So why would he want to ruin something he loves so much? And incidentally, if you look in the Disney history books, years before Toy Story was made, the Disney execs so wanted their first CGI animated film to be a sequel to Yellow Submarine and it was to be titled "Strawberry Fields Forever". (look it up) They even had Pixar animate 10 minutes worth of test footage, which is out there somewhere, God I would love to see that footage!!! And seriously, that is what my hopes of this film will be, more of a continuation of the story instead of a retelling of it, because the Pepperland characters are so rich that they can tell more than one story. Plus there are many more songs to animate and with characters like Bungalo Bill, Lovely Rita, Dr. Robert, Maxwell, Mr. Mustard, Taxman, Day Tripper, etc... You can have multiple stories. I truly hope this becomes the next big franchise... Oh the merchandise... I am digging this all the way people... Beatles forever...
  • Dan the Man
I agree Gerrick... its another great way to introduce mobs of new young mall rats to something they might not otherwise ever experience. So let it be folks, i'm pretty sure it's in good hands.
  • The Walrus
I can't live with it when tweenage pop artists cover Beatles. When the Jonas Brothers did Hello Goodbye, I almost puked.

So you can imagine that this remake is pissing me off
  • I love when somebody "loves" a film so much , they have to remake it! Why Bob? Are you going to improve The Beatles? Good Luck. The original was hand drawn and took a lot of talent and time , now it'll just be fed into a computer and spit out. Lovely. ( The Beatle-Zombies angle does interest me , but not as this project. ). Supposedly they want McCartney & Starr in on it ,let's see what they say. I don't think Disney or Apple wanna crap on "Yellow Submarine" or The Beatles, but I just don't see the point of a remake , they got it right the first time!
  • tonedeaf
My dad auditioned for this movie as John Lennon. He been in a Beatle Tribute band since 1994 and he is a Lennon look-a-like. Keeping my fingers crossed he gets the part!
  • william
get over yourselves Beatles purists.....i am sure you all pissed and moaned over Let It Be Naked, the Across The Universe filck and 'LOVE' in Las Vegas too.

u are all jake aces, each and every one of you leftover burnouts from the 60's.

I far one can't wait to see it.
  • G. Wizzman
    Illiterate dope is illiterate.
  • blah
i wish that they would keep the same animation and just put it in 3d
  • adaminfanticide
I heard about this but hoped it wouldn't actually come to pass. I'd be fine with a sequel, but a remake will be absolute shit! By the way, is robert zemeckis by any chance the "genius" behind such "masterpieces" as forrest gump? if so, then this is sure to be intolerable. Someone needs to start dosing disney executives with massive amounts of LSD now if this disaster is to be averted.
  • Moondog
I am a huge beatles fan... there is no need to "remake" Yellow Submarine. The original stands just fine on it's own even after all this time. Actually I have thought for a while it would be cool if they came out with a new sequel however, with the computer animation style ala Toy Story, Happy Feet, etc, in the same imagery of the original film, making the characters look the same and all. The original film did not have the actual Beatles doing the voices, so I've thought for a while it would be cool to bring the Beatles back so to speak.

But I'd rather see a sequel rather than the original remade. Possibly make a new movie "Octopus' Garden" for example, with an all new adventure for Sgnt Pepper's Band, with other songs not in the original (Strawberry Fields, I am the Walrus, Blue Jay Way, Lady Madonna, Hello Goodbye, Baby You're a Rich Man, Octopus' Garden, Dear Prudence, Penny Lane, Fixing a Hole, for a few suggestions).

I heard the Jonas Brothers were covering the songs.. is that true?
