Disney Announces The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made

zz2add966b

At Disney’s D23 fan convention, Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook officially announced that they will be actively developing a new Muppet movie, which will be titled The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made. And for those wondering, this is the screenplay written by Forgetting Sarah Marshall scribe/star Jason Segel.

I had previously heard that the project was titled The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made. The new title is a reference to an old unproduced film idea by Jim Henson which involved Gonzo blowing the movie budget on the opening credits resulting in the remainder of the feature film being shot in the same back lot, clumsily redressed to look like different locations from around the world.

The new film won’t likely feature the same storyline, as Segel has said that his story follows the Muppets, who must unite to save the Muppet Theater from an evil oil tycoon. As it turns out, the old theater its on top of some black gold. It is possible , but doubtful, that the screenplay could be rewritten to take on the concept of the old Henson idea.

Thanks to ComingSoon, who are on the scene. No information on when they plan to go into production, or release the film.

    i cannot wait.

I think Disney waiting to see when they should release the film. Maybe 2012?
  • Anyone have access to the screenplay?
  • Guenevere Dean
    So we can burn it?
  • South_Texas_Terror
does this mean the puppet dracula opera is on the back burner?

This is great news. After hearing about so many remakes and reboots and sequels, finally here is something I'm glad to see brought back.

I really want to read the screenplay. Segel absolutely adores the muppets and this has me excited.
  • That Henson idea about Gonzo blowing the budget sounds pretty hilarious, hopefully this follows that thread.

This sounds like crap. Disney must be desperate. Guess that's why it's the "cheapest" muppet movie, eh?
  • The worst part of the commenting system switch to Disqus is the lack of a downvote button.

Don't make me slice your throat.
  • Jason
Yeah. Where can I downvote YOUR lameass comment. The chick is right.
  • It's like we are forced to have nothing to say, because we have nothing nice to say.

with Disney's new found support (this is no longer the Michael Eisner era) and the talented Jason Segal, they want make a good Muppets movie that is relevant again. For that I cannot wait.

Truly, the muppets died with Jim Henson. Every time they try to come back with a new show it's awful. Let sleeping frogs...croak, or die or something.
  • He's got a hell of a job cut out for him anyway. Writing for each character is tantamount to teasing apart siamese twins joined at the head. He's going to have to figure out who goes where.

I've really been diggin' Jason Segel's filmography. And me not being a huge fan of the muppets even has me excited.

Segel has no one around him apparently to tell him when his writing is working and when it is terrible.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall was incredibly uneven. Sometimes very smart and sometimes terribly off track.

I don't have high hopes for his efforts here.

    lolwut.
  • twophrasebark
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is rated 7.5 on IMDB.

    Wut?
  • ericlarson
So your criticism of the film and specifically the writing is based off the stellar rating "system" of IMDB? Do you have an educated opinion? What specific issues do you have with it to which you can attribute "very smart" and sometimes "terribly off track" towards it?
  • Guest
You're asking me if I have an educated opinion after your first response was "lolwut."

Well, the character of Sarah Marshall, for which the film is eponymously named, never really justifies the narrative arc of the film. She never justifies Peter's devotion or enmity. She returns to him at the end and he rejects her and says "you're the devil!"

Where in the movie did this happen? She seems no flakier than Peter or anyone else in the film. As with a lot of recent screenwriting, we're "told" and not "shown" what it is about the characters that is important.

Look, it's not like you want to hear my analysis of this movie. You're clearly disturbed someone is criticizing your man crush on Segel. But since you asked, there you go. Wut.

It's called Forgetting Sarah Marshall for a reason..she isn't supposed to be a main focus as a character. The point of the story is to forget her because she isn't important in Peter's life and his journey realizing that and ultimately meeting the right person. I'm not saying it's a comedy classic or ground breaking but it beats 70 percent of the crap they call "comedy" these days and an excellent first go at writing. I'll take another piece from him then the inevitable "The Hangover 2"
  • PIGS... IN... SPAAAAAAACE!!!!!

I thought Henson idea was pretty funny and original.

I really hope they rewrite the script because Jason Segel's storyline of the Muppets uniting to stop an evil oil tycoon is just too predictable for a comedy. I've seen a lot of comedies with heroes facing up against some rich person.

They are running out of predicaments. Amnesia, check. Heist, jail, unemployment, disbanded, re banded, space alien abduction, kidnapping, great white way, tinsel town, treasure hunt, check. Christmas classic, double check.

Jason is screwed. There's only one thing left. And I know what that is. And it isn't kids.
  • That's a strange and intriguing title. I'd half expect the film to be Sweded. Which might actually work out better.
  • I'm just waiting for the SORORITY ROW Muppet movie
  • Reese
I still want to see a direct sequel to The Great Muppet Caper, just so that they could finally explain just how in the hell Fozzie Bear and Kermit were twin brothers.
  • jason seagel and muppets? i'm there!
  • Fake Lars
Steven Seagal is making a muppet movie???
  • Mind=Blown.

You think Segal will voice any of them? I mean, we have strange enough muppet voices ever.

"Hey, you want some spaghetti? That's like my specialty and junk."

A place someone who can treat you as a king or who can spoil you like a queen, this is the great place. It's dedicated for those sugar daddies
***** Sugarloves.Com **** who are rich and successful to support and pamper women who will treat you like a king and for sugar babies who are attractive and young to seek a generous benefactor to mentor and take care of you.
