TIFF Review: Jennifer’s Body

jennifersbody4

Two years ago, screenwriter Diablo Cody made a huge splash with her big screen debut Juno, which was praised by critics, and was ultimately met with backlash by those who arrived on the backend of the hype. An Academy Award and two years later, Diablo is back in Toronto with something to prove. If you hate Cody, I doubt Jennifer’s Body will do much to change your mind. There are sure to be a lot of naysayers with a vocal agenda who will likely never give this film a real chance.

For me, Jennifer’s Body was a lot of fun. The movie feels more like the teen horror films that I grew up with in the 1980’s than the contemporary slashers produced by Platinum Dunes or Dimension Films. Actually, it plays more like a teen comedy than a horror film, and that’s not a bad thing. The laugh to jump ratio is probably 50:1.

If you’ve seen the trailers, than you know the story — Megan Fox stars as a high school girl who becomes possessed and begins eating her male classmates. Amanda Seyfried plays her attached-at-the-hip BFF, who must put an end to the carnage. The storyline doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor does it try to. I’ve been using words like familiar and fun, but I’ve heard one other critic say “derivative.”

As expected, Diablo Cody’s word-work is the centerpiece of the film. Fox seems born to deliver Cody’s clever snappy dialogue, which is more Valley Girl than Juno sarcastic, laced with pop culture references ranging from Evil Dead, to Wikipedia, to Aquamarine. Trouble comes when Fox is forced to leave her comfort zone and show some actual emotion, which thankfully only occurs in one or two scenes.

Reitman regular JK Simmons has a supporting role as a teacher with one hand. And if you look quick, you might even see a cameo from screenwriter/producer Diablo Cody. And Adam Brody headlines an indie band who is trying to capitalize on a small town tragedy, which ends up being one of the best running jokes of the film.

The film almost feels like an indie which could have easily premiered in Sundance’s Park City at Midnight line-up sans the big name stars. Fox will likely make some huge bank of this film come DVD time, as this film couldn’t have cost a lot to produce.

Aside from black projectile vomit, most of the gore-infused action is kept off screen, side from a post-kill shot or two, and sometimes cleverly visualized (ie silhouette). It definitely feels light in this respect, especially compared to most R-rated horror films these days. Even the script is decidedly more graphic, describing a victim as looking like “lasagna with teeth,” an image that never visually comes across on screen.

But again, this film feels more like a comedy than it does a contemporary horror movie, and I’m sure those who might end up liking Jennifer’s Body, will appreciate the humor over the scares/gore.

/Film Rating: 7.5 out of 10

Good review. I'm actually looking forward to this movie. I don't have Diablo Cody as much as some people.
  • kellyjo562
I loved Juno so I can't wait to see this.
  • Great review. I remember hearing that Diablo was delivering a horror film after Juno and being very intrigued. I have no reason not to look forward to this. I enjoyed Juno, Diablo's writing is somewhat refreshing (compared to the usual Hollywood machine) and Megan Fox is hot. And horror is always fun. What's not to like?
  • evanz
I'm hoping it's something along the lines of Heathers or the original Buffy movie.
  • The_Kid
I actually really want to see this, so a 7.5 isn't that bad, it's not great but it still has me wanting to see this in theaters. So I guess I'm going to see this when it comes out.

    I lol'd.

Seriously though, how many Sonic Youth references in this one?
  • Great review I have to say. I didn't think too much about this film but it sounds like it has something to offer. Maybe this film could help in the reemergence of the comedy/horror genre?
  • I just came out of the Ryerson screening of Antichrist, and Diablo Cody, Megan Fox, et al were arriving for the Midnight Madness screening of Jennifer's Body. There was an ENORMOUS crowd out front, screaming and blocking traffic. I don't think this movie is going to have a difficult time making money when it is released. I personally can't handle Cody's writing, but I can see the appeal.
  • This is a marketer's wet dream. Link the Juno and Twilight audiences, throw in a dash of 18ish R-rating-drooling teenyboys for more M. Fox hype (with the first zipper shot in the red band preview mirroring the first motorcycle shot in Transformers2), and GG: success! All it needs is a nude Clint Eastwood monolgoue in there somewhere to sweep the Oscars. Hoping Peter's right that's it's as witty as it is jumpy. Definitely looking forward to it, myself ;-)

hm, I was hoping for a real horror film laced with humor but I still want to see this. I liked Juno and didn't have a problem with the dialogue so maybe I'll like this one too.

Kind of odd to not once mention the director (Karyn Kusama) in a movie review. Also, you simply using "Fox" to talk both about the star of the film and the company producing it without distinction is a bit awkward and causes the reader to retread certain passages to understand what you're talking about.

So a writer who is the funniest and most interesting person in her own little world, but nothing special in the real world. And a lead actress who everyone thinks is hot cause the media tells them so, but just looks like an average college girl who is talentless. Sign me up!
  • evanz
You think Megan Fox looks like an "average college girl"?

    YOU LIE
  • Steve
Now thats not true. I live in a town with 10-15 thousand college girls and there are literally thousands that are equally or more attractive than Megan Fox. Shes just a big thanks but no thanks for me.
  • evanz
Steve, if you were correct about this - that Fox is average looking and can't act - then wouldn't it make sense for Holywood casting agents to scour college campuses for any "average-looking" girl they could find and sign them up to movies for a few thousand dollars? It would save them millions of dollars. You know why that doesn't happen? Because you're flat out wrong, Fox is way better looking than your average college girl, and she *can* act.
  • Alex
Steve, please I beg you, tell me what College you're currently attending!
  • I really wanted to see this movie until I saw the trailer......I did not care much for the trailer at all. but I trust your opinion and if you say it's worth giving it a chance, I'll go see it.
  • Steve
Evan- A simple answer to your question is, thats not the way the system works. Much like the music business. The system wont stand hundreds of people coming at them and taking their pick. There is a system that people work through and she made it through that system. I only said she was talentless, which she is. She can act minimally, as in she has experience in front of a camera and can act at a step above high school drama club. But the reason there arent all these girls out there that could act as well and do look better than her is that she got her shot, due to whatever circumstances there were, and she has shown that she is always willing to do what it takes to make it, whether that be perving with Michael Bay or saying what she needs to every week to keep interest up. And sorry, but I dont find her that attractive, I believe I am less than 10 minutes from girls that are more attractive, and possible even girls that if they had the chance and motivation, would be her equal or greater.
  • evanz
"The system wont stand hundreds of people coming at them and taking their pick."

Not what I said, though. I said, why don't talent scouts just go to college campuses and ask pretty girls to be in their movies? If there's so many of them, and acting is non-essential, it should be really easy to find as many Megan Foxes as they want. Heck, they could even find some that aren't so bitchy.

The point is Megan Fox *is* special. There are not a million Megan Foxes out there. There are tons of beautiful actresses who did not achieve the level of success Megan Fox did, and I'm sure they did everything they could to promote themselves. Fox doesn't even really promote herself that well compared to many of her peers. The truth is - the truth you're too silly, stubborn, or faux-cool to admit - is that she is not "average". Not by a longshot.
  • Steve
The truth is, I don't ruin my shorts every time I think about her. The small amount of acting she has done, I have found unimpressive. I feel her looks are average, and nothing special. I am not silly, I am stubborn, I won't deny that, and I'm not faux-cool, I am too old and Midwestern for that, but that has nothing to do with that fact that to me, she is not special.
  • evanz
Well, I guess I could only ever hope to have a average-looking girlfriend by your standards Steve. What a great world it would be if that were true.
  • Robert
How dare you spoil these poor guy's masterbation fantasies?! They've already pre-order the Transformers 2 DVD planning for that special night when they ge to be all alone with Megan.

Truth is, I totally agree with Steve.
  • CheshireAna
I've got to agree with you. Frankly, the girl can't act her way out of a wet paper bag. I can't find her attractive at all, either, simply because she just looks like she tries SO hard to look "~sexy~", and she just comes off as incredibly fake and cheap looking. There are plenty of better actresses out there who are far better looking, and who don't bitch when they can't get
  • CheshireAna
*- who don't bitch when they can't have a tanning bed delivered to them NOW on set.
  • Guest
Megan Fox aint special and she cant act plus they are better average looking girls then Megan Fox
  • Merciful_budah
This movie looks like a cross between Poison Ivy, Ginger Snaps, and Carrie. I was definitely not interested after the trailer, but if it really has a good sense of humor about itself, then I guess I'll give it a try. Horror needs some vindication this year after H2, and I doubt Saw... Goddamn it, what Saw movie are we even on now...? Saw Legacy will do the trick. It's a damn shame that Orphan and Drag me to hell aren't playing in theaters anymore.
  • Steve
    Evan-
I do wish you luck on that, I am stuck with my slightly better than average looking wife. Haha.
  • Manuel
Steve I completely agree with you. Sometimes I think I'm the only non-Megan Fox fan in the world. I mean, she doesn't have much talent. She's not that great of an actress and the only reason she truly broke out into the business is because she was in Transformers. You know how? She washed Michael Bay's car. Really? Anyway, besides her nonacting skills, she's really not that hot. She's naturally gorgeous but the make-up department slaps too much on her, especially on TF2. But really, there truly are a lot of girls here in CSUF that are waaay hotter than Megan Fox. And have much better attitudes as well.
  • evanz
My argument with Steve is that he called her "average". You can only pull that off in online forums like this. In the real world, you'd just get rolled eyes.
  • Steve
In my defense, whenever she is brought up in real life conversation (which is thankfully rare), I do refer to her as average, and the feeling is generally mutual among those I am talking to. But I also appreciate and respect your opinion.
  • greycolumbus
You're right evanz! She's by no means average. Why? Because she was lucky enough to break into acting and be idolized as a sex symbol. If Michael Bay never found her, someone else would have been cast opposite Shia LaBeouf in Transformers, and you'd be putting some other broad on a pedestal.
  • CheshireAna
Honestly, I think she's average looking, too. She's really not anything special looking, and just comes off as looking cheap and trashy with how hard she tries to appear "sexy" all the time.
  • Guest
    totally agree with you.
  • Connor79
great review, I agree 100%. I thought Ms. Fox did a great job with Cody's dialogue & Amanda Seyfried was adorable as Needy. I think thus far alot of the critics dont "get it", It's almost like they were expecting another JUNO or for Cody to have written another oscar worthy screenplay. This film was clearly aiming to be exactly what it is, A clever teen horror comedy...I found it to be incredibly refreshing. As a hardcore horror fan who sees at least 50 horror films a year -some good MANY terrible- I recommend this whole heartedly.
  • peter
Diablo Cody fucking sucks. The End.
  • I really didn't expect to want to see this movie, but with this review I definitely might.
  • I have just seen the trailers of this movie.I heared that Megan Fox brings her body, I can't wait to see it! Movie is looking interesting.
  • H.P Lovecraft meets a sweet coming of age teenage comedy. Being VERY critical of horror movies, I must say...Jennifer's Body was a really good movie. I'd even say that it tops out as one of my fav Comedy/Horror movies. Though depicting extremely malicious violence, it did have a really calculated sense of refrain in regards to gore, and focused more on tension and horrifically pithy tonal transitions. That said, Jeniffer's Body is hilarious. The dialog at times seems out of place. Like the abruptness of Needy confronting Jennifer after murdering her boyfriend, preternatural evil as a symbol of hormonal issues that teenage age girls have to deal with while growing up. It's great because its like a chick flick that is also a perfect horror movie for guys. Take one of the hottest film actresses in Hollywood, and then have that same beautiful girl eviscerating and devouring dudes, spewing black slime and trying to steal her best friends boyfriend...am I the only guy here that thought Megan Fox projectile vomiting black slime was really sexy and stylish? (Just Kidding!)

Also a few scenes had choicely contrasting "fun party music" playing as a sonic theme during macabre violence, a swift witted juxtaposition!

Jen's Body is a very entertaining film and mood-wise, a marvelous achievement in ironic tone and playful malice. If you really explore the dialog you can see that the movie really does have a heart, amidst the hopeless demonic possession of Jennifer's Body. Also found Johnny Simmons performance to be stand out, his relationship with Amanda Seyfried was believable and touching. On a ten point scale I'd give the film 8.5/10.
  • Steve
So do they pay you to be a corporate shill or do you just get off on it?
  • Just writing my own review. It's my opinion...I really liked the movie. Thought it was really funny and twisted, unique.
