Paranormal Activity Finally Gets a Release Date

paranormal-activity

The ultra-low-budget horror film Paranormal Activity has been building praise for the past few years—after successful showings at the Screamfast and Slamdance film festivals, and most recently at Telluride. Anne Thompson is now reporting that the film is set for a September 25 release by Paramount. Given that the film was shot for $11,000 over a week, I don’t think the studio is worried too much about pushing it out there without a huge marketing campaign.

Directed by first time writer/director Oren Peli, Paranormal Activity is inspired by Peli’s own experiences with strange noises after moving into a new house. The film centers around a young couple (played by Micah Sloat and Katie Featherstone) who learn that their house is haunted, and end up having increasingly disturbing experiences. It’s being compared to Blair Witch because the film consists of home video and security camera footage, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing in my book. While Blair Witch may not have been entirely successful at scaring the crap out of you, there’s something to be said for minimalist horror that implies more than it shows.

Judging from the critical response to this film at the various festivals (it’s still at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 5 reviews), Peli’s low budget experiment will get some sort of reaction out of you. I’m hoping it’s one that involves being curled up in the fetal position.

  • Finally! I've been waiting to see this since the first /film story about it. I'm so glad we get to see the original version and not some crappy remake.
  • I have no problem manning up and saying that looks freaky as hell and I will have to pass on that one!
  • Franz
Why dont they just turn the light on... I mean, hello?
  • ryz
    Hello to you to. :D
Maybe the power has been knocked off.

It's about freakin' time. I've seen this one twice (Screamfest, then again at an advanced screening at Paramount) and it's scary as all hell. They changed the ending for the advanced screening and I hope they changed it back-- the original was way better. Hope this makes a ton of cash!

I find it odd that a first time writer/director can make a great film for $11,000 over a week and yet there are still studios that make very crappy movies.
  • Despite cringing at the somewhat cliche 'through the handycam' approach, this seems to suggest it has a little sparkle behind it. Something about it says "watch me or you'll be missing out..." I sure hope it delivers.

It's about time for the theatrical release.

It's about bloody time! A couple of screenwriting friends of mine saw this like two years ago and have raved about it ever since. It should not have taken this long to get this film out into theatres or on DVD. That's just stupid. The film itself sort of reminds me of an American version of GHOSTWATCH but without the documentary team from the BBC and Dave Lister. I will be there opening night to have the living crap scared out of me.

Looks like nothing more than an episode of GHOST HUNTERS and that audience reaction was as premanufactured by the studio as it gets..
  • Skulls R Us

The most horrifying movie i have ever seen, and probably will see! The documentary like Camera style adds a haunting realistic affect. Paranormal Activity is everything the Blair Witch Project wanted to be, multiplied by a 100000. What the Exorcist was in the 70's, I think Paranormal Activity will be for our generation. No other movies compare!!!!

I would really want to know if this story is fiction or non-fiction? I have heard many different opinions.
  • hesstruk
It's all staged, but it really does seem real because of the handycam effect.
  • seanpmanning
It's a little of both, the director of the movie experienced some paranormal activity in a new house he moved into and deciderd to make a movie out of it, however, the movie is not based on the actual events outside of the hearing of noises. I saw it and can tell you that I will refrain from any critique until I see the original which I feel is far more scarier than the "Hollywooded" version. Hollywood kills films in order to try to appease to their idea of what is good and bad, a notion that is definitely not based on the average persons reality.
  • amy whitehead

  • emilyk

  • Ella
does anyone know if it is the original ending (micah getting thrown at the camera) or the remake (katie rocking by the bed) that is on the dvd?
  • Ella
or original katie rocking by the bed and remake micah getting thrown at the camera either way lol
  • mickey
i watched it with my wife... believe me if they call that movie scary -- well then something is wrong with the public -- as far as scariness goes take a movie like psycho -- now that was scary... besides this movie i heard is fiction -- which makes it less scary -- and believe me again it is definitely not a scary movie....
  • Tess Craft
