Last night at the Venice Film Festival, the spiritual sequel to writer/director Alex Cox’s punk rock, sci-fi cult classic Repo Man, Repo Chick, premiered. Co-produced by David Lynch, the film has loomed with some hesitation in the minds of fans as an oddity, because it was shot almost entirely on green screen using RED cameras and an indie budget. After the jump, we’ll take a look at the first review by Variety, whose reviewer seemed surprised to like it as much as she did, if not as much as the original. I’ve also included photos and videos from the production, and I’ll update in the comments as more reviews come in…

This sentence sums up the review’s sentiments like a spinning hub cap: “A wacky blend of leftist, anti-establishment politics, eye-searing colors, outre costumes and manic overacting, Repo Chick could be likened to what you would get if Michael Moore directed an episode of Nick Jr.kiddie series Lazy Town.” Interesting.

If you’re wondering who the main star is above, that’s Jaclyn Jonet who has only performed in one other feature, Cox’s little seen 2007 effort Searchers 2.0. Before we look at Variety’s review, let’s get the film’s central concept out of the way:  ”against the background of the credit crunch and the subprime mortgage crisis in the US, where repossessions of homes, cars and other forms of property is at a new high. The repo business has expanded to everything from boats, houses, aeroplanes, small nations…children.”

Jonet plays the titular character, named Pixxi de la Chasse, a rich chick who is cut off by her family for her spoiled, reckless shenanigans. In need of cash and youthful redemption, she enters the modern repo business after being hired by the Velvet Glove Acceptance Corp. Quibbles in the review bring up a scrambled sense of direction and a low batting average for laughs…

Unfortunately, for reasons too complicated to explain, the pic morphs halfway through into a thriller spoof, as Pixxi goes in pursuit of a stolen antique train that’s being used to carry missiles by a gang of environmental terrorists. The terrorists’ ultimate demands are for the President of the United States to close all golf courses (providing the opportunity for a ranting message against the wastefulness of golf), ban the sport entirely and also make the entire government go vegan.

So far, Twitter has been light on reactions, and while these are negative, they’re merely Tweets after all…

“Don’t ever see “Repo Chick” unless you like model trains, valley girls, and bad green screen.” - @KyleWhite

“The mere fact that some films are never distributed and ‘a relief. Repo Chick How did you get into Horizons??” - @cinemablog_org (translated from Italian)

Here’s a behind-the-scenes interview with returning actor, Del Zamora, who discusses his confidence in the sequel to pay respects to the original while updating accordingly…

And an interview about the intensive green screen work…

Even with all the recent and new info and images, I’m having a difficult time conjuring how this film plays. What about you?  No details on the film making it over to the States sans festivals just yet. After a public spat over the rights to the title with Universal–they have a unrelated film in production called Repo Men–it’s nice to see Cox prevail. That imagine in the bedroom reminds me of computer rendering for my store planning class.

Repo Man had one of the most amazing soundtracks ever. I'm curious what sounds AC has lined up for this one.

PS: John Wayne is still a fag.
  • Thanks for sharing nice images because I have heard a lot about this movie but not able to get good images from the images.

Nice interview with Del Zamora. Hope to see Repo Chick in the USA soon.

I saw a screener of this fun film. What a joke it is that some guy who was the first to tweet about Repo Chick, ends up being the ultimate arbiter of this movie. His bad tweet review is all over the internet. Repo Chick is a fine movie with wonderful performances. The green screen backgrounds are obviously, supposed to be styled in an artificial manner. It is the theme of the movie, that the characters (much like our own lives), play out daily rituals, that in the big scheme of life, mean very little. Modern society is such a construction of artificiality and facade. Appearances become the most important currency.

There is an alternate universe in this movie. Either you accept it and go along for the ride, or you cry and pout that Repo Chick is not Spiderman I or Spiderman II, or Spiderman III. There is a style to this film. It is part of the motif. Sadly, today's audiences don't seem to have the capability to understand farce and ironic satire. A sort of irony deficiency. Repo Chick will still work for the dumbed down audience, however it is the intelligent, well traveled, well read audience, that Alex Cox has always spoken to. Nihilism has always been part of his strong suit as an artist. I can't expect the Neanderthals like KyleWhite and cinemablog.org to get movies, that sail over their heads. I just don't want them to be the arbiters of what gets seen, and doesn't get seen. If it is up to these low brow types, nothing but sequels and mindless action flicks will get produced.

Be nice to independent cinema or you'll end up with nothing but mind numbing flicks that feature product placement at every turn. The indies will die, if it is up to these provincial, lowest common denominator types. See Repo Chick for yourselves. Don't let a few dimwits steer you away from any indie cinema. Indies make movies because they love it. The studios just want to make money. Just like McDonald's hates good food and loves money; the studios hate good movies and love money. Transformers are just money making, lowest common denominator movies. That's okay. Have your dumbed down movies. Just leave a little room for indie cinema that leaves you thinking about it for a few days and in some instances, touched for life.

Alex Cox couldn't direct a turd down the toilet.

Independent Cinema doesn't have to be bad cinema. There are some great Independent films to discover and i am sure Alex Cox sentiments are good, but one day he has to realise that he just isn't a good filmmaker and this is why he doesn't work very often. Anything of any value he has done should be credited to those who brought talent to project, Roger Deakins being an example.
Directors like Alex Cox are actually detrimental to Independent cinema. They simply give it a bad name. Move over Alex and give others a chance.

Artnam is obviously involved in the project in some capacity...

Repo Chick was shot 98 per cent on greenscreen and incorporated miniature sets and stop-motion animation, as was used by the legendary Ray Harryhausen. Eric Leven supervised the project and the VFX team from Collateral Images.acnee

Artnam IS Del Zamora, so sad, so desperately sad. There is no conspiracy with big studio films chaps, they are normally watchable unlike 'repo chick' which is a disgrace..
  • Roger Borman
This film is absolute rubbish. The sad attempts at trying to justify the disgraceful greenscreen and ultra cheap FX as being a purposely legitimate part of the movie is an all time low for Alex Cox....and as for anyone who is in anyway a cineaste trying to give this blobfish of a film any fins...they're obviously blind, deaf and braindead....sorry Al...file under plop..again.

    repo shit

    Artnam...(Del Zamora)

Yes you're right....today's filmgoing audiences don't understand ironic satire and farce....but the inference that Repo Chick is somehow instilled with either of these is actually a farce...

Unfortunately for you Artnam (Del) and Mr Cox the majority of them do understand rubbish and seeing as though Repo Chick falls neatly under that banner the game's up......and Repo Chick will be soon available in the numerous " under $1" dvd baskets at 7/11...Walgreens...Wal Mart....hey you name it...

just not on any cinemas screens
  • roger borman
    Also...

I noticed that there was a reference made here to the spirit of Ray Harryhausen....the steaming pile that is Repo Chick and its quasi VFX efforts can in no way whatosever hold a burned Swan Vestas to anything Ray Harryhausen ever did, thought about or shat out down a toilet on an off day with the shits...

There is no justification other than the film is totally rank. Please have the guts and brass to admit that it is....no matter how you try to dress it up with a million comparable reference points...they are only lame props for what is obviously a "Dougie Bader".........it's got no legs
