rambo5poster1

The recent announcement that Rambo V: The Savage Hunt would venture into sci-fi received a surprisingly large and middling response from readers last Friday. More than a year ago, I speculated that the film might take on a similar vein to Predator, and based on a new, official plot synopsis over at AICN, that seems on the money. In fact, the project is a loose adaptation of a sci-fi action book called Hunter by James Byron Huggins (Leviathan). Sylvester Stallone bought the rights to Hunter a while ago, which sees “the world’s greatest tracker and “his giant black wolf Ghost” in a showdown set in Alaska with a massive, intelligent creature, the result of a shadowy DNA-experiment. Rambo V’s plot is clearly based on the material…

A beast is loose somewhere north of the Arctic Circle…And the raging creature is headed south toward civilization, ready to wreak bloody devastation…It’s a job that Rambo and his 22-year-old hunting partner, Beau Brady, can’t turn down, but they and a team of highly skilled Special Forces Kill Team [sic] discover that the prey is beyond their wildest imagination, a half-human abomination created by a renegade agency through a series of outlawed genetic experiments…they’ll still have to confront the grim reality that it may have grown immortal.

It’s of note that this synopsis is a bit different from earlier details, which had Rambo hunting down (as opposed to being hunted by): “brilliantly instinctual killer soldiers that have no qualms about taking life. And when things go wrong, Rambo is brought in with a Black Ops squad to hunt, capture and kill these chemically engineered creations.” The rather un-pro poster that was released for the project (above) seems to point towards Rambo having a wolf, like in the book, rather than (or in addition to?) battling a lycanthrope-type terror as some have speculated.

The addition of a sidekick doesn’t sit well on paper. The appeal of Rambo is that he’s a loner, and the end to Rambo IV (Rambo) made that crystal clear, hinting that Rambo would be returning to battle in the U.S. a la the first film. It also digs up bad memories of Die Hard IV, which had John McClane trading stale wisecracks with a bright-eyed Justin Long. Of course, DH4 categorically sucked ass mostly due to the franchise-detour that was a PG-13 rating; the rating for Rambo V hasn’t been announced, but Stallone previously flirted with making The Expendables PG-13, which is cause for mild worry imo.

Again, I think some of the negative reaction thus far—besides canon loyalty—can be chalked off to that straight-to-DVD-esque poster. It looks like something Stallone would make if he hadn’t pulled a pretty stellar pop-culture comeback with Rambo and Rocky Balboa. Last year, I was intrigued with the “different genre” idea and, as a fan of the series, I remain so. In fact, I think it sounds pretty ambitious for Stallone compared to a “Mexican drug trafficker” fiesta as previously rumored. Stallone’s last foray into sci-fi was the failed and pricey launch of a Judge Dread franchise, but I’ve always found it interesting that he didn’t make more sci-fi flicks like California’s governor. Never say never. But what say you?

this will be the greatest rambo movie ever... hopefully the russian from rocky 4 is the werewolf abomination
  • Gelman
The U.S./Mexico border idea was perfect. People are actually defending their own private ranches along the border from smugglers right now. They could USE Rambo. Plus, immigration will be a big political issue in the next couple of years. Rambo could have been relevant, ticket sales would have skyrocketed, and some people would probably even have protested in front of theaters. It would have made the news.

But now, this sci-fi-ish movie will be forgotten a week after it hits theaters.
  • mixed on rambo having a partner. on one hand i agree that rambo is especially badass because he is a loner, but on the other, i don't give a shit about the series and it would be hilarious if he had an equally badass old war buddy on the hunt. it would only work if they were both dead serious, old, and brutal.

update, i just reread that quote.. i thought it meant an old friend of 22 years, not a godamn 22 year old.. fuckkkk that shit. they will probably get shia laboof.
  • steve63
lol shia labeouf is the worst person alive
  • Gelman
"John Rambo and the Kingdom of the Black Wolf Ghost"?
  • Bill
If you saw that last movie, where he was a boatman, kicking ass in Burma, towards the end of the movie, he was firing a 50 cal machine gun. He got wounded, and was holding his shoulder after it was over - which is the same picture in front of the wolf. That is kinda cheesy.
  • existenz
That creature sounds a lot like "Doomsday" from the Superman comics. Genetically enhanced, immortal, raging creature, etc.

I really don't like the sidekick idea. First Blood Part II had the Asian girl as a sort of sidekick/love interest, right? No thanks. I just want Rambo blowing the hell out of some shit, and getting really angry in the process. The sci-fi idea could be cool, especially if it ends with Rambo becoming the first Master Chief.

And yes, that last bit was snark.
  • agemoi
    good stuff..

Last i saw though.. die hard 4 didnt suck ass. I was surprised at how much ass it refused to suck, actually. The addition of Justin Long was a little jarring at first but i thought their dynamic worked really well everything considered. And hey, the unrated version is there and it was pretty good too

    Just sayin..
  • justinlecair
Unfortunately you're absolutely wrong. Die Hard 4 was absolutely terrible. The entire appeal of John McClane was that he was a regular guy faced with tremendous odds that he had to overcome through great physical sacrifice. In Die Hard 4 they turned him into a comic book character. He felt no pain and all of his signature wit was ignored to open up more screen time for Justin Long. Furthermore, the technology vs. tradition storyline didn't work and the antagonist was emotionless and robotic; and even though Timothy Olyphant played him that way on purpose, it doesn't excuse the fact that it was lame and incredibly cheesy. Please, whatever you do, never pretend that Die Hard 4 was a good movie ever ever again.
  • SixFootSeven
It was pure, unabashed, mindless fun. And let me emphasise "mindless" there, it wasn't trying to be realistic, it wasn't trying to be profound, it wasn't attempting to be poetry put to the screen. Hell, it wasn't even pitched as a Die Hard film originally.

What it was trying to be a was showcase of flashy, explodey setpieces with Bruce cackling away at the destruction caused.

So for what it was, and as far as turn-off-your-brain flicks go,
    I enjoyed it.
  • CyT
Fine ... buts thats not what a Die Hard movie should be. I think anyone who is a fan should hate this one ... its a lot worse than Indy 4 was, given the similarities.

Although Kevin Smith is awesome :)
  • Die Hard 4 was much better than Die Hard 2. Go watch the latter again.
  • This is a serious deviation from the series. Having what is essentially a werewolf inside of a Rambo movie is ludicrous. Then again, First Blood actually contained a serious message about our country's mistreatment of returning veterans, and the series has already deviated pretty far from that with the 2nd and 3rd installments. However, the 4th Rambo really brought back some of the magic of the original with a lot of its deeper themes, therefore, I can in no way endorse the idea of Rambo fighting a werewolf and neither should any longtime series fans. Let's be honest though; we're all going to see this damn movie out of curiosity.
  • Gelman
You're wrong on one thing: I'm not going to see it.
  • Joe
And you'll be the only one at home Gelman. I mail you some oils.
  • First John McClane, then Indiana Jones, and now Rambo is getting a sidekick? Where will it end?!?!
  • Name
Next thing you know they'll give James Bond a side-kick...ah shit hopefully that doesn't happen.
  • Gen
Christian Bale refused a Robin, and I seriously doubt Daniel Craig would ever warm up the the idea of a young sidekick. Come on, they rebooted the Bond franchise for that reason alone, to have it rebooted. No need to water it down again.
  • Joe
Daniel Craig and the Bond people won't f*ck up the outstanding new Bond series. No worries on that one.
  • thatguy27
Indiana Jones got a sidekick in "Temple of Doom", his name was Short Round.
  • CyT
And Short Round is friggin awesome! Suck on that Shia.

"Hey Lady ... you call him Dr Jones!"
  • Gelman
It'd be impossible for Rambo to have an Asian sidekick. He'd shoot at him thinking he was charlie.
  • I am confused because the plot that leaked out was from Stallone himself. Where is this synopsis coming from?
  • I think what is going on is that the Trades got the right synopsis to begin with and then Stallone made something up to throw us off and then when that was too awesome he made this one up that is going to piss everyone off. Beau Brady? That is too bad to be true. My money is that we are going to end up seeing Rambo save some children from a sex ring south of the Mexico border. This just sounds too strange. I was really hoping we would see that second one that he personally told Knowles. I am confused though.
  • ndrage85
I really don't have much of an opinion. It's been years since i've seen the originals, and recently saw the new Rambo. People were telling me how awesome it was just for the brutal violence alone. After watching it i was a little underwhelmed, not by the lack of violence, there was plenty of that. Just that it didn't seem like that much of a movie. Plot could have been fleshed out more. More of a journey.

As far as this new one goes, I think this plot sounds horrible. Cliche and just boring. It could be entertaining, but hell, I think the Mexican cartel plot sounded better. Sits better with the theme of Rambo. Injustice. I wasn't aware Rambo was a sport hunter who took contract jobs. Maybe it's been too long since i've seen the originals.

And what's with the hate for Die Hard 4? I guess i understand most of the points. I love the Die Hard movies, I guess it's been so many years since Vengeance that I kind of looked at 4 as a stand alone movie. And as that I thought it was great fun. And I felt enough bam and pow considering it was a PG-13 movie. Sure it could have been better and would be nice to see the REAL John McClane, although we did get a bit of that. The unknown everyday hero. Saves lives but still gets shafted. Does what he does because it's the right thing to do. The movie was entertaining, so I can't fault it too much.
  • Ralphy
If he's going to have a sidekick why not the sniper from the last one?
  • Guest
this sounds like a straight to dvd movie
  • Joe
No you are just playing on your fears about the scifi stuff. After the success of the 2008 Rambo film, everyone will go see whatever Sly makes next with "Rambo" in the title. Thought we already made this point clear...read the thread please Dan the man.
  • Mike
I would be excited about this if it wasn't related to the Rambo character. Sounds like a fun plot, but why use this in a series that is grounded in legitimate conflicts and a legitimate character? I like the second and third Rambo movies as fun action, and I felt like the fourth was a great return to form (all the action of the second and third with plenty of character moments pulled from the first), so why ruin it with the inclusion of monsters?

    Really, Sly?
  • Sounds like fun. Though, casting my mind back to the independent grainy originality of FIRST BLOOD, I'm kind of upset to see how this has become franchised. Still, can't hardly blame him/them, right? Money is money.
  • Shaun D Lyon
The book is a good adventure yarn and can easily see why Stallone has transposed his Rambo character from the books protagonist. People should read Hunter by James Byron Huggins to see what I mean.
  • billybigballs
Please don't do this Sly. I was excited to see Rambo back in the U.S and wanted to see how he would cope. Battling against human trafficking a huge problem in the World today would of been great. I liked how Rambo battled against humanitarian issues, not fighting mutant animals.
  • Gelman
Of course, one could say that the smugglers crossing our southern border ARE "mutant animals."
  • Joe
Agreed. There are many more productive, decent things to spend one's time on than shitting on people because "daddy wasn't home." Get over it drug lord mutant pansies. Eat a tortilla and be happy.
  • That's insane!
  • thatguy27
Like Die Hard 4 or not (I personally enjoy it more than the second film in the franchise) you can't blame it on the fact that he has a sidekick. In case no one remembers John McClane spent the third movie jumping through hoops beside Samuel L. Jackson's character Zeus.
  • Reniassance_Man
Sorry, but I'm tired of the argument that Die Hard 4 sucked because of the PG-13 rating. DH4 sucked because of the writing. They got a completely human character from the first film and turned him into an almost full-blown superhero in the fourth film. Jets blowing up a freeway? Seriously? I'd expect that shit in a Vin Diesel XXX, or maybe in an Ice Cube knock off sequel, but not in Die Hard.
  • Amen. Glad to see I'm not alone on this.
  • leroy1031
sounds weird to combine Rambo and sci-fi. I also agree with the fact that Rambo should not have a partner. other than that it looks alright.
  • olli
Whatever happened to that proposed Rambo sequel where he's up against the KKK? That'd be fun as hell to watch and probably the best way to keep the antagonists as utterly reprehensible and cannonfodder-appropriate as the baddies in Rambo 4.
  • entertainmenttod
Im a big fan of Sly and Rambo but this plot seems absurd. Clearly Sly wants a big mainstream hit and he's selling out the Rambo character to do it. How do you go in this direction after the last film. Its like putting Batman on the moon.
  • Yeah, I'm also curious as to the source of this new plot synopsis.
But like everyone else, I'm totally against a side-kick. . . and in general, much preferred the last "plot." What with him and a group of guys going against a group of super soldiers, as opposed to one super natural monster.
I'm honestly excited about the new direction, but I just hope we get a straight answer as to what the plot is exactly before too long.
  • The source of the new synopsis appears to be Stallone himself, as AICN has scanned and posted a preview of the official script/premise. They also have direct contact with Stallone on the project, so it would appear to be 99% legit. Also, as stated in our article, the synopsis has a lot of similarity to the book Hunter, which Stallone has maintained interest in.
  • But Stallone is apparently the one who gave AICN the synopsis last week so why this new one? WHich one should we believe?
  • danno
Rambo already has a damned sidekick - his MAHOOSIVE knife!

    Or is it an M60?

As long as one of them gets a speaking part.
  • Joe
Right on. And now he has yet another sidekick: his massive right hand, aka "throat killer"
  • Daniel
Hunter is one of my favorite books. I love the work of James Byron Huggins. I froze when I read this. Even if this film sucked I would watch it five times.
  • ShadowMan
Hunter is a great book, and Rambo is actually a very fitting cinematic replacement for the book's title character, and I think if more people were familiar with the book then the excitement level for this movie would be far higher. Fact is if you were to put the original Predator movie, or even something like John Carpenter's version of The Thing, into a brief two paragraph synopsis before we had seen the films then they too would sound pretty lame, and yet both are superb and fan favourite creature feature films, along with being damn good film making on their own right.

Hunter, via Rambo, has every chance at being every bit as good, if Stallone manages to deliver it to its true potential, and after surprising everyone with Rocky Balboa and Rambo, and what looks like a fun old time with The Expendables, I wouldn't bet against the guy. It should also be noted that Stallone has been trying to get Hunter made for the better part of ten years, and this is likely the only way he was able to do so, so this isn't a cheap Rambo cash in, its the combining of one of his iconic characters with one of his passion projects, and that has every liklihood of being a match made in action fan heaven.

Mark my words, if Stallone gets this right, its going to kick a lot of asses and surprise the hell out of people. Here's wishing him the best of luck.
  • no sly dont
the last rambo was awesome and a great companion piece to first blood.thats where rambo ends for me but id still see this and if it turns out really bad sly should go full boar for 6 and try to get rambo vs wolverine or rambo vs terminator at that point it just wont matter anymore.if he really wants the scifi route he should do a supersoldier thing minus the halfwolf or dinasaur angle.and just have him and mickey rourke hunting down drugged up steroid raging killing machines in the artic now thats gold that rights itself .
  • Spawn
Man, I'm starting to feel sorry for the poor old fellow.
