Defendor Movie Trailer: Woody Harrelson Fights Crime!

defendor_1a

Every piece of new material I see from the Canadian homegrown superhero movie Defendor, starring Woody Harrelson and Kat Dennings, has me more interested in seeing it. Peter posted a bunch of photos a while back and I ran a short clip not long after. Now the full trailer has arrived in advance of the film’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. And yeah, I’m ready for this one. See the clip after the break.

Here you’ll see Defendor in action. He’s really Arthur Poppington, who becomes a self-styled superhero on the trail of Captain Industry, a drug and weapons dealer who may or may not exist. Defendor wears a costume made of sweat pants and duct tape. His weapons are common items like marbles and lime juice. (How much did I giggle at the delivery from Elias Koteas in the lime juice scene here? A lot. In a good way.) Kick-Ass has one side of the ‘what if someone really became a superhero’ angle, and this movie plays another.

I love the look of the film; it’s low key, not too flashy, and seemingly just interested in getting the ideas across. Peter Stebbings seems to have got some nice stuff going here; I hope the action comes across well, though the focus is pretty evidently on character. And while you could argue that Woody Harrelson is just being Woody Harrelson in Zombieland (based on the trailers) here he looks like he’s gone a lot deeper into character.

Peter will be at TIFF starting next week (hopefully I will, too) and if things go well we’ll be able to bring back a first-hand report about the film. I know it’s easier to get excited about Kick-Ass, which has an established comic book as source material, but I hope people will pay attention to this one, too.

  • Reminds me a lot of SPECIAL.
  • lol
    exactly what i thought
  • swisschez
I just hope its better than Special. because, to be honest, that movie let me down. Looks like Defendor provides a second chance at the same premise.
  • Fir3Wolf
I was going to say that exact same thing. It really does seem like that movie only not so low budget. Still looks interesting enough to want to see it.
  • stevewithav
Its like Special with style. It seems like it has that "is this person crazy" element, but it also has action in it. Special directed by Zach Snider
  • Name
    Exactly what I thought.
  • Rockie
woody looks kick ass in Kick Ass, i mean Defendor

    all kidding aside i'm there
  • arthera09
Did anyone else actually find the trailer a little tragic (in a good way)? I feel really bad for the character. I think there is a lot of potential for this to be a powerful character film.
  • bonchampion
Yea I think that's the intent. I think the trailer is cut to appeal to a broader audience looking for a comedy, but they can't hide the very prevalent tragic hero storyline. Just watch the short clip that the article links to.
  • babyjaypan
dang it got raw in the end
  • I think I know the reason why Iron Man was so popular despite being a bad film.

Its been one of the few superhero movies recently that hasn't brooded in the existentialism and depressing nature of being a superhero. It just tried to be fun

And despite Woody Harrelson, this doesn't look fun, or by any means original. I mean, druggie prostitute girlfriend? How much more indie-bait could you get?
  • presto117
despite being a bad film? please... stop acting like your opinion is fact... I hate when people do that with a passion.you make the world sad.
  • I think it should go without saying that it is my opinion since, well, I am the one writing it.

And there are empirical reasons how someone could come to the legitimate conclusion that Iron Man is provably and viably a bad movie

And you're wrong, it is complacence and obligation that make the world sad.
  • Travis McGee
The way you wrote it, you made it sound as though it were fact that "Iron Man was so popular despite being a bad film," and not your opinion.

Also, I would love to hear your "empirical evidence" as to why (you thought) Iron Man was a bad film. I'll agree with you that it wasn't a great film, but you'll need to have some pretty convincing theories as to why it was (not a good film, or even a decent film, but) a bad film.
  • headmonkeys
What I liked about Iron Man is that the non-superhero elements and aspects of the story/character(s) were as interesting, hell better, than the superhero parts.
  • Travis McGee
A super-hero film has to be based in the existentialism. It's why they are separate from the rest of humanity.

The reason why Iron Man was a success was because it focused on characterization instead of ridiculous amounts of CGI and over-the-top fight sequences.
  • Everyone interested in this should run out and rent Jun-hwan Jeong's 'Save the Green Planet!'. It's the best of the delusional not-quite-superhero sub-genre I've seen.
  • mixmaster
men that movie was great, specially the ending.
  • mangoshakes
i'm so much more interested in this than kick-ass
  • presto117
    unlike
  • silent_jay
    why?
  • Then you obviously haven't seen the kick ass footage.
  • dagreenman18
Looks very well shot and funny. It also feels a lot like Special, a very underrated film that if you have not see, Netflix in NOW!!!!
  • mangoshakes
plus it's nice to see casey jones from ninja turtles!! slash what happened to his hockey stick :( maybe that's why he mocks the lime juice.
  • Scruffmcgruff
i havent laughed that hard in a trailer in a long long time.

    the slingshot/marble were classic

and of course this nugget.. "please god NOT the LIME juice!!"
  • kore
    he looks like mr. incredible
  • Guest
    its BLANKMAN
  • Almost Blankman.
  • Poland626
This seems like a bigger budget version of Special from 2006
  • GregoryV
My next Halloween costume. I'm excited to see this.
  • silent_jay
this is Special with a bigger budget, and zombieland is a bigger budget shaun of the dead.

that being said i still cant wait
  • probot
okay we get the idea, It looks like "Special".
  • headmonkeys
Can't wait for the film. And damn, it looks fucking dark.
  • kjell
    Has a lot of potential
  • kolbe
Looks great, cant wait to see it.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Woody Harellson, despite showing up in a few films like No Country, sort of disappeared for a long time before this year. It's really cool to see him in these lead roles again. Welcome back, Woody.

Not so interested in 2012, but his character almost makes me want to see it.
  • andystan
I think this is literally the first time ever I have ever felt sympathy for Woody Harrelson. I mean that in a good way. It's also the first time he's ever made me laugh.
The film does look a lot better than I originally thought it would be, but then again it's a lot easier to make a good trailer than it is to make a good film
  • Weyland_Yutani
You've must have never seen Kingpin.
  • angrymoor
    I really liked the trailer.
  • RyanCarell
Best comment so far, in my humble opinion ^
Can't really start an argument with you, and thus, I feel like you got to the crux of the issue.

I personally don't really like it. I think it DOES make me interested in the movie, but I don't like trailers that really play up the movie. I prefer to simply get some footage and basic plot ideas then go on my own path to deciding if I want to see it.

Anyway, I love the cast, I like the concept, and I don't think it looks very funny, but do think it looks quite interesting and thought-provoking.
