Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Red Band Trailer

boondock_saints_2_trailer

UPDATE: You might not have looked closely at the logos at the end of the trailer, but Anne Thompson reports that the new company Apparition has picked up the film for distribution. That’s how you’ll see it (or not) on October 30. Please, spend a few moments considering that the same company is releasing this, Black Dynamite and new movies from Jane Campion and Terrence Malick. Makes my brain hurt. Original article follows.

You might have seen Dave Chen’s video from the Boondock Saints II: All Saint’s Day panel at Comic Con, where the reaction of the fans to the trailer reveal was as loud and insane as Twilight fans seeing new footage from their chosen series. Given the hatred levied at Twilight and that fanbase at Comic Con, the irony there is delicious. Now the Boondock Saints II trailer is online and you can see the phenomenon for yourself. Or is it a phenomenon at all?

I was shocked when the first film became an underground sensation, because despite a few good aspects (can’t really argue with Willem Dafoe and Billy Connelly) the thing just plays like painfully self-aware Tarantino lite. And in this trailer, when one of the two titular brothers says ‘lets do some gratuitous violence,’ I get the sense that nothing has changed. That might be exactly what attracts fans of Troy Duffy’s first movie, I suppose. I don’t hear any memorable dialogue here or see anything that looks like something to get excited about.

Here’s the plot of the sequel, as written by Dave, in which the returning Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus and Billy Connelly are joined by Julie Benz and Clifton Collins, Jr.:

A COPYCAT KILLER IS IMITATING THE BOONDOCK SAINTS! GUNS! JULIE BENZ IS HOT! SLOW MOTION! MORE GUNS! SLOW MOTION! PEOPLE SHOOTING THINGS! ONE-LINERS! LOTS OF GUNS! PEOPLE GETTING SHOT! MORE ONE-LINERS! SLOW MOTION! CLIFTON COLLINS JR.! MORE GUNS! EXPLOSIONS! BILLY CONNOLLY HAS LOTS OF GUNS IN HIS JACKET AGAIN! AGAIN WITH THE ONE-LINERS! PETER FONDA, FOR SOME REASON! DID I MENTION THERE WERE GUNS IN THIS MOVIE? SLOW MOTION!

All I have to say is this: if you’re really dying to see a hitman movie with Irish accents, a hot babe, crazy violence and some killer, funny dialogue, get In Bruges. Please.

Soooooo excited for the long overdue sequel.Love the original.Even have a tattoo from the movie.I might even forgive the sequel for having Judd Nelson in it since the original cast will be there.

What had me curious now has me a bit naucious after seeing this trailer. Why anyone gave Duffy money for this is beyond me. I loved the 1st one- mostly becuase it was a QT knock off- but this screams direct to video. Ugh!

I'm sure that I'm not the only one, but I've been waiting YEARS to see footage of this flick (better yet... for this flick to be made), as the first is my all time favorite.

This trailer was well cut, and does a great job at letting me believe I should be entertained by BS2:ASD.

Norman Reedus was freakin' hilarious in the first one, and his character seems to have carried over rather well into the sequel.

Was that Rocco at the 1:38 mark? Isn't he dead? I know there were rumors of flashback scenes and that's more than likely the case.

Who is that guy playing Sean Patrick Flanery? Looks nothing like him! Is he getting old? Plastic surgery? Botox? ??? (still an exTREMELY talented actor, though)

Love seeing the return of Detectives Greenly, Duffy and Dolly. Should make for some great comic relief. (which I'm sure the movie will be choc-ful-of)

Not sure of the rest of the /Film readers, but being a complete product of the 80's, I can't watch any movie with Judd Nelson and not have John Bender appear in my head.

I really hope there's a good use of the rope in the this movie!

That's really all I have to say right now. I'm sure that once I watch this trailer 150+ more times I'll have some additional feedback.
  • Yeah, pretty sure that's Rocco, probably flashbacks, orrrr maybe it's a zombified Rocco!

    No, just NO

i think it looks awesome and it is my kind of a film.

Amen to In Bruges! Boondock SHIT = overrated rubbish. This sequel looks no different.

Actually, I didn't know there were Bonndock Saints haters until today. Loved the movie, I think it's fun, smart and well made. But I have to admit it, this trailer fails to impress. I don't think it's gonna be as good as the first one.
  • Haha, I'm with you there, the hatred is simply astounding. Only the second time I've been surprised by overwhelming comments on /film, the other is when people raved over how much they loved Pee Wee Herman.
  • i liked the first one, get over the tarantino-esque shit, lots of movies try to be like that, at least this series is entertaining and good fun
  • Kensei
Well I will watch it, I will probably enjoy it and leave the theater satisfied (which is rare these days really). But no way in hell will it beat or come close to beating the first one, I honestly just saw Boondock Saints about three years ago, never heard of it until my best friend shoved it under my nose. Seen it a good dozen times since if not more, and this looks like a good action packed movie, but no William Defore and that saddens me. BUT it looks amazing just doubt it will come close to being a classic or cult classic.

John Woo should get paid for everytime a lone diector 'borrows' his gun-play style. At least Tarantino acknowledges Woo's 'A Better Tomorrow'.

Love the people who say they hated the first one but take time to watch the trailer and read the article and then complain. Come out of the closet already!
  • calling people gay huh? what's it like in your Mc WOOOOOOOOOOOOOORLD!?

    hey, it could happen.....
  • mchops
I said come out of the closet...as a boondock saints fan that is.
Oh and btw, that advertisement up above for the Movies Now app - I suggest checking it out. It's a decent app
  • i know what you meant and i'm just playing. bored at work. really i just wanted to say MCWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORLD. love and respect always /film readers

You like the word mcworld? Ok that's cool.

I didn't call anyone gay. Read before you write.

Excuse me, I believe I can resolve the issue of whether or not this movie (or the previous one) are any good:

IF YOU LIKE THIS SORT OF MOVIE, YOU WILL LIKE THIS MOVIE.
  • jamie
I've never really understood why the first one is so popular amongst freshmen & frat boys.

Is it because they "discovered this hidden gem of a movie" in someone's dvd collection one night whilst pregaming, and then were lauded for spitting out one liners from it later on during beer pong?
  • Poland626
In Bruges? More like In Boredom. Seriously, you cannot compare these two movies. IB is somewhat similar but you are talking about a slow paced, action limited movie where boondock Saints 2 is full of action. It's what In Bruges SHOULD HAVE BEEN and will be
  • YoungZer0
The beauty of In Brudges is that it's not just another braindead action movie ala Boondock Saints. It had clever dialogs and loveable characters. And your last sentence doesn't make sense, since In Brudges never tried to be as shitty as Boondock Saints and never will be as shitty as Boondock Saints.

I bet you also enjoyed Transformers 2.
  • The Great Cambino
I never understood the lovers or the haters of Boondock Saints. I always thought it was just a fairly well-made, moderately fun flick with some quotable lines. I'll probably rent this, just like the first one.
  • People gravitate toward extreme poles on almost every subject, it's a way of life. You're either with us or against us. When you disagree it becomes our job to prove you wrong, and we are both forced to our extreme beliefs.
  • DoctorTran37
Man. That didn't even look like Clifton Collins Jr. I thought Rocko had gone heavy metal for a minute.

I just don't get the whole "Boondock Saints sucks" argument I've been reading here. I haven't read one legitimate, well-thought of argument...including Russ's (who is already my favorite writer here btw).

I can see the comparison to Tarantino, sure, but since when is that a bad thing? I guess I just don't get how being compared to another is an insult. I've read about many directors (probably on this very site) being compared to other directors often. It's impossible not to be compared. Humans like to see patterns, and everything has already been done before anyways. As the saying goes: "Good artists copy, great artists steal." I don't think Troy Duffy copied anything Tarantino did at all, he stole the idea of mixing humor and violence...what else? Tarantino's signature flares are still his own.

As for the original film itself, I thought it was fun and smart. It kept you engaged, the story was original, and the characters were all well crafted. What else can you ask of a first-time writer/director?

And yes, the slow motion may be a bit overkill, but fuck if everyone on this site doesn't suck Zack Snyder's balls for adapting two comic books via 99% slow motion - only one of them adapted well, at that.
  • I don't get how people can think that boondock saints is smart. it is clever in some moments but it is not smart. If it was a smart film it would actually get the main characters or the audience to question the validity of what they are doing. Instead of making a movie that could raise questions about vigilantism Troy Duffy leads everyone to believe God is looking out for them and they are doing the lord's work. At no point do they kill anyone that you can sympathize with and it asks no hard questions for the audience to ponder. The world of Boondock Saints is so simplistic: all gangsters are bad guy and they should be killed by the brothers because they are on a mission from God and you shouldn't question everything because the movie holds your hand the whole way through. I do enjoy the film for what it is but it irritates the fuck out of me when people say it is smart.

why in the hell does sean patrick flanery not look at all like sean patrick flanery??

It is from doing guest spots on bad tv shows and the lifetime network for the past ten years.
  • Meh.

Why In Bruges? That movie was awful. The only thing I remembered from that movie was that Colin Farrell was awful, as usual, and that any Americans presented in the film were fat Yankees fans and a self hating midget....am I wrong?

I don't think the movie will be amazing or anything, but it at least looks fun, Clifton Collins Jr. has that crazy look in his eye that's pretty fun, he was good in Rules of Attraction.

You sir have no class. Its just the detail in the story and what is each person story.

Whats the song that comes in around 1:03??
  • i hated the first film so this is lost on me

to those that loved it enjoy. to each his own.

*goes back to playing Batman: Arkham Asylum*
  • I personally thought this trailer looked awesome, but it missed one thing, and it is one huge thing. Willem Dafoe. Replacing Willem's character with Julie Benz is a HUGE blow to the movie itself. If they make Julie have 1-2 lines throughout the movie, then I think it will be good, but if she talks a lot, then I will hate the character and end up possibly losing interest in the movie. It's good to see this trailer, and there is a lot of hate for this movie, I don't get it, but everybody is entitled to their own respective opinions.
  • Hostile
If this is "frat boy" movie then I guess I need to join a frat: better that than associate myself with the morose, stuck-up nerds whose only experience with a "party" is in World of Warcraft. Why all the animosity towards high-spirited, well-intentioned, good ol' fashioned fun? Am I not a film nerd unless my sights are set firmly down my navel? I watch movies for a story, not for the sake of knowing I'm better than everyone else who is watching less fancy movies. If you didn't enjoy the film then that's absolutely fine, god knows that Willem Dafoe in fish nets isn't for everyone, but do us film nerds all a favour and try to hold back on the Boondock Saints fan hatred: you're making the rest of us look vaguely like shit-heads.

Twilight fans, on the other hand, you have my permission to kick to death in car parks across America.

Russ Fitcher apparently can't tell the difference between hitmen and vigilantes, nor indeed between action movies and black comedies. In Bruges was an amazing movie, and I recommended it to anybody who'd listen, but my reasons for enjoying that movie are absolutely nothing like the reasons for which I will most likely enjoy All Saints Day. In Bruges was a movie to watch with my family; All Saints Day will be a movie to watch with my "bro's", or whatever the correct frat-ism is. It's not a one-or-the-other choice...
  • Octoberist
Not exactly on topic but..kicking Twilight fans to death?

You mean teenage girls? Don't know if I can agree to that.
  • Hostile
Why not? They're tiny and fragile, it won't be difficult.

    (joking, clearly.)

I bow to the awesomeness of your comment
  • mchops
Russ, I don't think the comment email system is working properly. I posted a message and subscribed over an hour ago and haven't received any comment emails. just fyi
  • Shane
The first one was total shit. This looks no better.
  • tapzepol
I enjoyed the first one, this looks like a parody. The trailer looks like a joke on how Hollywood will find a way to cash in on a movie by making an epically horrible sequel. I guess the fact that its actually called "Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day" doesn't help, even if the title may just be a tongue-in-cheek throwback to cheesy, violent sequels.
  • Flanery looks wrecked and where the hell is Rocco??
  • Lol, dead? Altho he's credited, probably just flashbacks, I'm pretty sure I saw him at 1:37.
  • binaryshock
I really don't understand why I keep subjecting myself to comments on this website, or even read the articles anymore. 90% of the time they end up making me cry inside. It seems like at every turn on the site there's people hating on absolutely everything, especially anything with any semblance of action. I just don't get it anymore. What exactly are people looking for from movies. Everyone here acts like they have master's degree's in film studies and critic movies by saying stuff like "potentially a triumph of style over substance" and this great tidbit "Everywhere critics and true lovers of film are having heart attacks." Or people saying stuff like "I liked the movie but in a dumb fun way" to try and save face, cause liking the original or any action based movie might possibly make you look bad in the Master Critic's eyes.

The first movie was great, the story wasn't "Paper thin" it was pretty damned smart the way Duffy presented it. Now I don't like Tarantino personally I think he's a complete moron, his movies on the other hand tend to be a hit of miss with me... 4 rooms Hit, Inglorious Bastards Hit... Kill Bill, Big miss... Not because of the camera work, or the "lack of story" or the this or the that, I just found the movie boring... See I don't need to try to make myself sound smart to try and explain why I don't like something... I just didn't like it there, done, move on...

I know this is ranty, and most probably the pretentious people out there will say I'm whining, but you guys need to get over yourselves seriously... One more thing, I get this is a blog site and it's based on people posting stories and opinions. But is it at all possible when posting trailers and stories about movies, that maybe the guys posting them can be more professional, and give us the story without the spin of your opinion and then make a seperate blog about what you like and dont like... Cause I love the updates, but more often then not I leave the site frustrated cause the writers of the stories just seem so detached from atleast my opinion, and I'm sure I'm not the only one... This isn't a problem with just your site but other sites like Kotaku, Joystiq, any blog site to be honest....

Ok I'm done ranting... sorry for taking up so much space lol
  • Freakinflax
I agree. If I wanted to watch In Bruges again, I would. People clicked this link because they loved the original. I don't see people jonzing for irish action movies.
  • I agree with pretty much everything you said binaryshock. It seems to me that the founder of /film (Peter) is really good at writing about anything whether he likes it or not, and then shows his opinion in a non-offensive way. Where other writers on /film (usually Brendon, but today Russ) just write the biggest rant they can on why they hate something. It's appalling, if you don't want any readers go ahead and keep writing like that. I used to frequent cinemablend but left them for /film because of this very reason, the head writer there was a huge douche and just threw around his opinions telling everyone else they're dumb (and refuses to give spoiler warnings, but that's another rant).

Peter, please, teach your staff how to write a story without offending half your readers, keep the opinions, just don't shit all over the subject.
