The Three Musketeers

Paul W.S. Anderson will direct a new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s Les Trois Mousquetaires, aka The Three Musketeers. Anderson co-wrote the screenplay (read: run, run far away…) with Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Tailor of Panama), and plans to shoot the film in, wait for it… 3-D. UGH! If you’re not yet disgusted, please read on.

According to the article on HeatVision, Anderson intends for the film to have a contemporary feel. Here is the quote:

“We are definitely modernizing ‘The Three Musketeers’ without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece,” said Anderson, who hopes to shoot in France and Germany. “But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure.”

So basically, Anderson wants to make a non-period period film, which will really just be a dumbed down B-action 3d spectacle? I wasn’t too interested in seeing The Three Musketeers back on the big screen again anyways, certainly not with Anderson at the helm, and definitely not based on his pitch. Is there any chance this movie will be any good? I’d recommend that anyone interested should probably just read the book instead (which is available for free thanks to Google).

Paul WS Anderson (not to be confused with Paul Thomas Anderson) has made a career directing bad video game adaptations (Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil trilogy) before moving on to equally bad Sci-Fi remakes/spin-offs (Alien vs. Predator, Death Race). His best film, the 1997 sci-fi film Event Horizon, earned critic quotes like “a retarded Goth version of 2001″ and “Anderson shoots things to look cool, but he has no grasp on how to modulate the visuals to carry the audience into the deepening nightmare of the plot.”

The plan is to begin shooting next year, with a tentative 2011 release date being eyed.

love the title "Paul W.S. Anderson To Ruin The Three Musketeers" LOL

i doubt mind seeing Three Musketeers on the big screen but no way i want Paul W.S. Anderson to direct it.

plus Mortal Kombat was a good video game adaptations, that was Paul W.S. Anderson best work in my opinion everything else he has done is totally rubbish.
  • Merciful_budah
Agreed. Mortal Kombat is pretty sick. I'm rather fond of Event Horizon and the Resident Evil Trilogy as well. I can't see how any of those movies would Make Anderson's name jump out as the right director for this though. WHy do I feel like the Musketeers are gonna be doing crazy flips and walking through lasers?

i forgot about Event Horizon that was a good movie but Resident Evil Trilogy aint good the first film was alright but the rest are bad movies. Resident Evil Trilogy did not follow like the game at all its not really a video game adaptations to what we known.
  • Enthropii
Agreed. I actually liked all the RE movies as well. Then again, I never played the games...

I actually thought event horizon was a decent sci-fi/horror flick, but it seems like that was the highlight of his career... Perhaps Musketeers will... Who am I kidding.

He just married Milla Jovovich. He must be doing something right.

    You what? She's a munter!

    Event horrizon was pretty awesome.
  • God it sounds awful... I'd still see it out of morbid curiosity though.

I don't understand why people bash event horizon when it is somewhat a cult flick among many people. I know we should bash Anderson but it's a nice movie and I don't know one person who hates it (and all of them stay as far away as possible from Andersons stuff). RE 3 was also quite good but mainly due to the fact that it had almost no plot and was a bit like a 90min music video.
  • Chris
...and was directed by Russell Mulcahy. What' the point when corsets don't take centre stage?
  • Norbert
Yeah, I know but people who didn't like it still use it as a way of bashing Anderson.

even Event Horizon was a thinly veiled remake of The Black Hole which starred Robert Forster in the 70's

so he's never really made something original as yet.
  • Happy_Evil_Dude
So basically, "The Three D Musketeers"?
  • MortenKVebjornsen
Haha, that was a cool comment :)
  • Someone should remake Event Horizon. Someone who understands his job.
  • Barold
    Ha ha ha... Edward Knoblock!

PAUL W.S. ANDERSON NEEDS TO GO KILL HIMSELF!
  • cib3k
Event Horizon was great, Mortal Kombat was a lot of fun and Death Race wasn't so bad either. Everything else he did was crap. I don't mind him directing, he should just stop writing the god damn scripts.
  • Duke
MK is the only bad thing from him that is good.

    Anderson to RUIN?

You have a very low opinion of a guy who loves making movies. (AVP was entertaining and well made, in my opinion; save the clunky script and location/time plot-holes!)

Anyway, point still stands, can't you have 'make' instead of 'ruin' so people can make up their own damn minds weather they'll be 'disgusted' or not? Don't start thinking for other people!

It has occurred to me that you are none other than Paul W.S. Anderson. I ask of you, stop making movies. You destroyed Resident Evil and almost killed 2 franchises in one blow to the head.

If you're not, then this will be fun. /Film is Peter Sciretta's blog. This has somehow been lost on a lot of people that read this website. Furthermore, you're asking for neutrality on the internet? You're speaking Greek buddy.
  • WTF? o.0 This might be the worst idea of all time.
  • Ender
    Death Race was pretty good.
  • misterclock
ugh!!! 3D??? If this movie breaks even, Disney is going to come out with a 3-D Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • probot
(sigh)...why? I can go on about how he ruined three really good franchises but...why?
