halloween

Over the weekend, the conclusion to Rob Zombie’s fresh take on the franchise, Halloween II, grossed $17 million. Budgeted at $15 million, the sequel would likely have grossed much more if not for direct competition with the weekend’s top movie and debut, The Final Destination 3D (a very healthy $28m). Today, the rebounding Weinstein Company announced a new, eleventh installment that is already in the planning stages. Entitled, not-so-curiously, Halloween 3D, it’s slated for release next summer.

According to the LA Times, Dimension’s Bob Weinstein offered that Zombie would not be back, as expected per his upcoming The Blob, and that a new director is in talks, one with experience in horror and a “different take” on Michael Myers. Note: /Film commenter, DrChicago, guesses that Alexandre Aja (High Tension) may be the director in line to take over the franchise. This is a great guess because Aja is currently finishing up Piranha 3D for Dimension and is not officially booked for another project; then again, Piranha is due April ‘10, so would Aja really have two 3D horror films from the same studio released so close together?

In a set visit report last Friday, I quoted franchise producer, Malek Akkad, as acknowledging a “third” film way back in April: “Well, the way it works is that, our deal with Dimension, is that hopefully they can opt to do another one. And that’s a legal technicality, and a whole other issue. …It feels like these two films are really Rob’s take. And, you know, we’ll address [a sequel] later. …Where we go from here is anyone’s guess. …There’s going to be the diehards that are never going to be happy unless it’s frame-for-frame like John Carpenter’s version.”

In lieu of generally poor reviews and unjustified vitriol from critics for Halloween II, this writer is predictably quite curious to see how these same critics react, both to the news of an unrelated follow-up and to the 2010 film itself. Similar to Frankenstein, Dracula, and hell, even the Blob, new films featuring Michael Myers, an iconic monster of modern horror, will always be on the way. As an enthusiast of horror, personally I’m fine with that. I also chalk this reality off to why I prefer watching new entries written and directed by a talented and cool genre auteur like Rob Zombie; a filmmaker who actually took the time to deconstruct and reconstruct the franchise’s mythos, characters, and ignore its reputation for C-list talent (by casting Brad Dourif, Malcolm McDowell, and Weird Al). For once, audiences were required to think about Michael Myers, about why—post Carpenter’s original—he remains scary, and the character’s murky line between spectre, zombie, and serial killer.

Whether one disliked or even detested Zombie’s vision(s), he forever contributed two films to a series that had come to possess all the definition of a dark, dead-end alley in the worst way. With nowhere else to go but retread that tired path, Zombie instead took a risk and placed the identity of Myers—a far more dubious horror icon compared to Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger—and his sister’s front-and-center. And, in retrospect, I think it will come to be seen as natural that, arguably, the only working American director whose face/image is synonymous with American horror got a shot; nay, wanted two shots at Myers.

Now that his versions have ridden the white horse into horror history, who would you like to see direct Halloween 3D? Moreover, what American horror director(s) do you find superior to Rob Zombie, with the exception of Sam Raimi, who tends to venture outside the genre? Producer Akkad previously expressed, “…obviously Halloween, and Michael Myers, is a very American horror icon. And Rob gets that.” This was in response to a question about the involvement of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, the French directors of Inside, who were originally slated for Halloween II. He added, “And these guys were French, so there was something lost in translation somehow,” half in jest. That said, is there a foreign director(s) you’d rather see take over in 3D?

I love these movies! It obviously gave all of you something to talk about. Aw relax, it's just a movie.
  • I think they should go back to the original series, the real series. The rob series is ok but they left the better series open ended. They just ruined it all by leaving that series behind. Plus the real series is WAY MUCH BETTER than robs.

fuck H2... there was like 5 minutes of the original Halloween II and then he turned it into a fucking dream. then making myers speak and grunt and rarely wear his mask. oh and you can't forget about the ghosts of the family or killing laurie, (who wound up getting a name change - wtf) and killing dr. loomis. fuck H2. People need to stop changing Halloween, or give the remakes a different name. Don't call it a remake if it's not.

hallwooen 2 sucks. there is not one likeable character in the whole movie, so you as the viewer feel no connection or sympathy for anyone. Even the main protagonist, Laurie who is an annoying nagging unimportant HAG for the whole film. Her character has absolutely no direction or motivation. The film could completely do without her character and it wouldn't affect the already "all over the place" plot. Dr. Loomis' character is obscenely ridiculous. You can almost tell that Malcolm Mcdowell thought this while playing the part.."when I want your opinion I'll beat it out of you??" Where the hell did that come from? How does this character go from being a sensitive paternal intelligent man to this self important buffoon?? Could Laurie Strode be ANY MORE ANNOYING??? Are there any citizens in Mr. Zombies world that are NOT sex deviant hillbillies? And...the movie is too damn long and random. Most of the characters that die you only just met a couple minutes ago in the film, and as stated before they aren't likeable so you don't care that they die. This results in the movie not being scary because you don't vicariously feel the terror of these stupidly written charcaters. What was with the strip club scene? What was the point? Why was Michael there? UGH...GARBAGE! Despite my dissapproval for this film, I am a Rob Zombie fan. I think he was just the wrong director for this film.
So, what compliments do I have for this film? Well, the death scenes are gory and intense. That should please any horror fan. Also, I liked Michael Myers' new look. I know this was a point of debate for many people, but I didn't mind it. I also thought the opening sequence in the hospital was good. Not enough to save this drivel though.

I give this movie 1 and a half stars out of 5. What a piece of garbage.

i hear you man-its a different take on the story all around but that's the whole idea-if zombie or anyone else re-made the movies scene for scene there wouldn't be any element of surprise to it & we might as well just watch the original-gus van sant did that with psycho which is fine as a novelty but again the hitchcock original is the best-the so-called remakes of the day like prom night & the fog were disappointing but friday the 13th & my bloody valentine were actually pretty good-patrick lussier directed my bloody valentine 3d so hopefully he'll do halloween justice too-we'll have to wait & see !!
  • meyersfan 78
it is what it is-A MOVIE !! i've been hooked on halloween since october 30,1978 when i saw john carpenter's original-it's the best one & always will be but rob zombie's vision is the best of any halloween film since-don't overanalyze it-it's all just good friendly violent fun !!!
  • myersjr.
I actually liked Rob Zombie's Halloween the only that pissed me off was him making Michael like a Jason or some kind of Freddy it really pissed me off and the horse thing seriously WTF! was that?! but other than those two things i like the remake i dont know why 3 has to be 3D thats f'n stupid i hate 3D but my bloody valentine was pretty okay for me. I think Michael Bay should do the 3rd one becuase so far i like the Friday the 13th remake and i am looking forward to A nightmare on elm street as well i'd do it myself if i was i could haha
  • Halloween 4 life
Oh, and one more thing that doesn't make sense in Carpenter's version if Michael was locked up for 15 years how does he escape and all of a sudden know how to drive a car now that is just stupid at least in Zombies version he is walking around and not driving cause he was never taught how to, makes sense.

Also, you say you don't like the way Michael killed the hooker in H2 but, you have to remember he has no conscience and animal instincts so think about it, Hooker leaves room whilst Michael kills fat bloke and the corridor she's walking down just so happens to have a mirror then Bam, he comes out and smashes her head against it til she's dead nothing womanizing about that and also, either way Michael would have killed her whether it be against the mirror or with a knife you can't say that's womanizing cause it's not. He's just a killer that will kill anyone, he don't just go for women now does he but if he did then i would agree with you that he is a womanizer.
  • Halloween 4 life
Oh shut up, Rob zombie's Halloween Remakes are better than Carpenter's i enjoyed them more although i will always respect Carpenter's for being original.

Zombie didn't mess around with the killings in his films, Michael is a Psychopath and Zombie showed that in his films. He showed the true no nonsense straight out evil side of Michael Myers which, quite frankly was amazing fun to watch.

Also, think about it, if they say Michael is as mad as they explain he is is the films, then he wouldn't be sneaking around picking people off one by one like he does in Carpenter's version, because he is supposed to have no conscience so he's not going to be like oh i better watch out the cops might see me etc... he ain't going to care who see's him or who he kills because he's already dead inside, he is just a killing machine after one thing His Sisters Blood.

So, at the end of the day Zombies version is better because it is more realistic and more enjoyable to watch.
  • Jose
C'mon u guys. Atleast Rob tried something new. dont get me wrong i liked that old halloweens better than the new ones but i did enjoy watching the zombie ones. heck imma go see it again with my gf on the halloween weekend. Gove rob some credit here.
  • Name
man i think rob zombie did a great job on bolth of these movies and should be respected but if they get the person who directed high tension i will not watch h3 cause high tension sucked so much ass and h3 had nuthing to do with micheal myers so i think they should put the series to bed and leave it alone rob did a good job on closing the series
  • 1and2stunk
I have been a Halloween fan for a good part of my life. When I heard that Rob Zombie was taking it over, I was sick to my stomach. I had seen some of the previous garbage he produced, Devils Rejects and House of a thousand corpses. I could only take about 20 minutes of each before turning it off. The first Halloween was terrible and not scary at all. There was to much foul language and the whole white trash thing in every one of his movies is so lame. And yet again more Sheri Moon, I mean who other than Rob would put her in a movie. Halloween 2 was even worse, Michael in a hoodie are you kidding me. I am so happy he is done with this. If he has a hand in part 3, will Michael be rapping with Sheri Moon dancing next to him? The only reason these movies made money is because of the die hard Halloween fan base. It sounds like they are really rushing production of part 3, I hope it's not more of the same.

As long as they keep MM like the original movies i dont care

Halloween 3D should continue from where H2O left off.
  • Felix
you meen resurrection right? cause after H2O comes resurrection thats were he finally kills laurie
  • eric
i think instead of putting down rob and his two movies we should be thanking him. he brought back the franchise. where was it going after ressurection?? it was getting to the point of there was no point to continue that series. what was he gunna do return home and have a bunch of colledge kids come and spend the night. come on, rob brought back the series and gave myers a identity, not just some kid that was cursed by the "thorn" and thats why he killed people. i love the originals but i like the way that zombie took it, in a new fresh direction that the series needed after the original 2nd one. i would think that they would lobby zombie to come back and try to give another one a go but he has too many other projects going on. i just hope they can get the same characters and start changing them around like alot of sequels do.

1 Word: Reboot! Laurie strode is awful in Rob Zombie's Halloween
  • Liz
In lieu of generally poor reviews and unjustified vitriol from critics for Halloween II...

    LOL! That's a good one!
  • I'm really hoping they follow in the tradition of the original Halloween series and do away with Michael Myers for the third installment. I'm ready to see a re-imagined "Season of the Witch" with all new masks. But they'd best not screw with the Silver Shamrock "...days til Halloween" jingle.
  • John
"Dimension’s Bob Weinstein offered that Zombie would not be back"

That's the best part of the news! I couldn't be happier. Zombie's Halloween 2 was crap. Not scary and he explained far too much about why Myers kills, yet again. It's pathetic to blame the FD3D opening as the cause to Halloween 2's non huge opening... its because the fans clearly didn't care for the first remake and word of mouth will kill this one too. I hope someone does Halloween 3D the right way and actually makes it frightening.

Bill Hicks review from beyond the grave......

"Saw a movie this year called 'Halloween 2'. Now, Bill's quick capsule review: piece of shit. Thank you. That's all it was, by the way. Don't get caught up in all the phony hysteria over this piece of shit film. "Was it too sexist, or what about..... "
You're way off base. You've forgotten how to perceive correctly. Take a deep breath, watch it again: "I think it's a piece of shit." Exactly. That's all it ever was, was a piece of shit. Just had to say that and clear it up."
  • Felix
beautiful that's the best way to put it
  • god, do they really need to make a title that involve "3D" for every 3D movie, its getting really annoying
  • Dominocracy
Unjustified vitriol? Are you kidding me? Halloween II was utter crap from start to finish, and this is coming from a huge fan of his first entry to the series. And the real shame of it all is that this movie had a great idea behind it all: explore the psychology behind a madman and his victims. There are countless ways he could have done this, and he chose to do it in the absolute lamest possible way: Momma and a white horse lead crazy all over the place and Laurie is now a "fuck everything" vegan punk who has really fucked up nightmares. I've seen directors show crazy, and the vast majority of it trumps this shit in every way. And to top it all off, he had to throw his talentless wife in there making a fool of herself with her corpse paint and utter lack of any acting skill whatsoever. When i wasn't stifling my own laughter, I was making a dire attempt not to cringe. This film deserves every steaming pile of "vitriol" it gets, and deserves far less than the forgiving 22% it holds on Rotten Tomatoes.

God damn it, I cant believe I waited two goddamn years for this shit.
  • batman66
The 90's brought "Scream" Horror, now fast forward we have 3D. Ok Hollywood, 3D sucks, first not every one can process the effect, and I for one wear glasses so its a headache. Next, I don't want Myers facing the camera every five minutes slashing at the camera. On a side note, Is Halloween cursed? This is the second time a 3rd movie moves away from what is Michael Myers. First the Witches and now 3D! Also, the way this ended, I cant see it being continued without Zombie. Trilogies never work when a new director is wrapping the series up...T-3, X-3, Blade 3.
  • thorofthunder
3D filming is becoming quite like genital herpes.
  • If they're totally redoing it, then next summer is way to early. And simply saying Halloween 3D makes it appear to be a sequel to Halloween II, which people obviously won't want. They should really just give it a rest.

    From the cutting room floor:

The trick or treaters didnt even have masks... and it to post date this with thye black and white tv;s and the rotary dialers, along with modern cars (see sherrif car) is just plain novice. zombie, please retire from film.

This is the goal here. To effectively scare us. But you need the Carpenter music or elese this is not Halloween. It is not. It is something else, you need the theme song.

I am abivalent about taking away the friendly midwest neiughborhood, i liked ahveing a a neiughborhood versi the new 'isolated house on a hill". The house was done right though, white shingled, an homage to the original.

OK, HERE;S A COMPLIMENT, ONE OF THE BEST SCENES ( THE FIRST APPALUSE I GAVE WAS WHEN MYERS STEPS OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND DOES THE RIGHT THING BY SHUTTING UP THAT ANNOYING PASSENGER WHO KEEPS REPEATING , F---, OVER AND OVER, MYERS STEPS OUT AND PUTS AN END TO THAT, BUT ONE OF , IF NOT THE BEST SCENE IN THE FILM IS WHEN MYERS GRABS THE FRIEND FROM THE HOUSE AND DRAGS HER BACK IN SLAMMIN G THE DOOR BEHIND THEM THIS IS AN HOMAGE TO TOBE HOOPERS TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, WHEN LEATHERFACE slams shut the sliding door and millions of people get scared.

This is the goal here. To effectively scare us. But you need the Carpenter music or elese this is not Halloween. It is not. It is something else, you need the theme song.

So that was a big, BIG< BIG< BIG< BIG, BIG, BIG, BIG, BIG, problem I had here. Sure, he plays it during the end credits, but that is just a novice film maker making a typical mistake.

Sure I liked how myers yells when he stabs now, nice. but the sound of a door breaking down is not that loud. what's up with brad dourif?? do you think any town i the midwest would stand for a sheriff who doesnt know what a barber shop is? I appreciate his acting, and I like him here, but get a f--ng haircut! It is sloppy novice filmmaking and I am gald zombie got the boot.

Now, taking Dr. loomis ( who i love, both loomis, mcdowell and the great donal dpleasance who made loomis an icon), but aking him and making him an evil money grubbing hump, is kind of the cheap way out. There is more to the Loomis chartacter than that. C;mon.

The girl - I cant; stand her. She was annoying in the first one, and she has gotten WORSE OVER THE TWO YEARS. PLEASE, SHE SHOULD NOT BE FILM, PLEAWSE , SHE IS THE DEFINITION OF THE MOST ANNOYING THING ON THE PLANET.

OH, AND HUNTER, ZOMBIE LIED TO US. HE CLAIMS THAT HE ADDED MORE TRICK OR TREATERS IN THIS FILM. I MEAN, ITS HALLOWEEN , RIGHT, THERE ARE TRICK OR TREATERS IN THIS COUNTRY, AND THERE ARE ALOT OF THEM AND ITS AN ALL DAY EVEN SO YOU WILL SE ALOT OF THEM. WELL, THERE WERE TWO IN THE FIRST ONE, AND THERE ARE THREE IN THIS ONE. HE MESSED IT UP AGAIN, AND IF YOU CANT GET IT RIGHT THE SECOND TIME, THAN GET THE H-0L OUT, PAL.

SURE , I APPRECUATED, the heightened level of decorations. But it seemed like it was painful zombie to do, becasue hge did not do a good job of it.

    Part 1/3
Any film that has Michael Myers in the cast starts with a 7. This film ended with a 6.58

HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN? you ask. Here's how.

For starters, Zombie completely went off the deep end. He thought he could go-it-alone, and not need any support from Carpenter (hold comments, pls). Well, he is way out of line.
The Halloween franchise IS one where the viewers have a feeling for Michael, for THE MUSIC THAT WAS INTENDED FOR HIM. THE HALLOWEEN THEMSE SONG MUST BE PROMINENTLY PLAYED, ITS NOT THAT IT MUST, ITS JUST THAT IT REALLY, REALLY, REALLY SHOULD BE PLAYED AT ALL TIMES POSSIBLE. THIS IS MYERS'S ANTHEM, THIS IS WHAT WE LOVE, THESE TWO MUST NOT BE SEPARATED. ITS LIKE TAKING THE FILLING OUT OF A PIE, AND SLAPPING ON THE COUNTER. Your going to need the pie crust to make it work, dumbo.
  • Gajonka
Time for Zombie to go - huc messed it ALL up again.
  • A new Halloween in in magical 3D within a year. Yep. Everything seems to be in order here.
  • VelocityAtrocity
If the studio thinks that The Final Destination 3D won the weekend because of the 3D... they should really ask themselves if releasing a movie called Halloween is wise more than TWO MONTHS before the holiday called Halloween.
  • Good point. However, the same date did gangbusters for Halloween/Dimension in 2007, and in the end it was a game of chicken to see if FD3D would move to another date. This very issue was discussed on set, and at the time, producers believed that FD3D would give out. Still, H2 opened to $17m, which is pretty solid imo. It made back its budget, it didn't have the 3D novelty going for it (hence the new announcement), and Rob Zombie's original was certainly a divisive film, even in the horror community. Lastly, this is the weekend that sees a lot of young people returning to college, which takes away business. Think about it: two gory R-rated horror films did a total of $58m at the box office this weekend. Insanely rare.

As far as Halloween, the holiday is generally reserved for an annual juggernaut known as Saw. This year also sees the release of the highly anticipated (by geeks) release of Trick R Treat. If anything, competition is greater at that time this year. But H2's release has lead many to express these sentiments, which is understandable.
  • ziggi
stick to an american director for halloween 3.
that way all the foreign directors can keep their attention on making their own films, which cant help but be better than anything hollywood is capable of cranking out.
im not willing to give up my good horror fix.
and right now im not getting it from hollywood.
aja get out of hollywood now before its too late.
  • Bill Brasky
Hunter you must be on fucking as much crack as Rob was when he made II. Its more groan inducing then Halloween Resurrection. Making the only two words in the entire script "fuck" and "baby" does not equal being different. And having some ridiculous white horse explanation at the beginning of the movie doomed it to POS territory.
  • probot
As a fan of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury's Inside, I would love to see their vision of Michael Myers. Edgar Wright and Bryan Bertino(The Strangers) would be a few interesting choices as well.
  • Can't say I'd be that horrified by another one. It just keeps on going.
  • I think zombie ruined the Halloween franchise so i gave my 10 bucks to the horribly acted and unwatchable final destination 3d.
  • lokiboy101
Alexandre Aja could do wonders with the next installment - but if the time table is a year, then I will bet that he won't do it (the reason he declined writing/directing The Hills Have Eyes 2 was because Craven wanted the next installment in theaters within a year).
  • yes11
A sentence containing the words "Rob" "Zombie" and "Auteur" almost broke my computer.

Uh...Malcolm Mcdowell is not "c-list talent."
    clockwork orange?
  • Of course he's not C-List. That's the point made above: The Halloween franchise is soiled with C/D/F-list actors. Zombie's films class it up with McDowell and Dourif, and both give better performances in the sequel than in Zombie's original.
