2012: Three New Disaster-Filled Posters

Sony has released three new posters/banners for Roland Emmerich’s new disaster film 2012. Say what you will about Emmerich, or his films, but I’m really digging the intense over-the-top ridiculous destruction pictured in this new art. Take a better look after the jump.

2012

Centuries ago, the Mayans left us their calendar, with a clear end date and all that it implies. Since then, astrologists have discovered it, numerologists have found patterns that predict it, geologists say the earth is overdue for it, and even government scientists cannot deny the cataclysm of epic proportions that awaits the earth in 2012. A prophecy that began with the Mayans has now been well-chronicled, discussed, taken apart and examined. By 2012, we’ll know – we were warned.

John Cusack stars as Jackson Curtis, a writer whose devotion to his failed-but-possibly-brilliant novel broke up his marriage and left his family in flux. But Jackson remains a loyal dad and when the chips are down, he will prove he will do anything to save his family. Amanda Peet plays Jackson’s ex-wife, Kate, who maintains friendly contact with Jackson but has long tired of competing with his work for his attention. As the earth’s plates start to shift – destroying L.A. in the process – Jackson and his family will begin a desperate journey by land and air to survive to see the new world.

Meanwhile, at the very highest reaches of the world’s governments, there is a plan. They will not be able to save the entire human race, but they will be able to save some, and those will have the chance to begin society anew. President Thomas Wilson, played by Danny Glover, is very quick to understand the crisis the world is about to face – and equally quick to prevent mass hysteria by keeping the information secret. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the president’s chief science advisor, Adrian Helmsley, who has managed to decode the earth’s messages and is determined to do what he can to help as many people as possible. Carl Anheuser, the president’s chief of staff played by Oliver Platt, might be pompous and quick-tempered, but he is equally determined to see society – at least, those in society who can afford it – survive.

Thandie Newton, playing the president’s daughter, Laura, is shocked to find out what her father’s government has hidden from the world. In fact, it seems that the only man outside the government with any clue as to what is about to happen is the radio host (and maybe prophet) Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson), who broadcasts his predictions to anyone who will listen.

2012 hits theaters nationwide on November 13th 2009.

You know, im really sick of disaster movies.
  • [A]
Yeah -- there were like, 10 last year.
  • freemachine
Roland Emmerich has a Ph.D in Earth Destruction. I love watching him work.
  • Gelman
Well the poster artists missed something: The wave hitting the White House is coming from the wrong direction. The Atlantic is to the right of the white house from this angle, so this wave must be coming from.... West Virginia? Kentucky?

If they just changed the image from the White House south lawn to the north face of the White House, the problem would be fixed.
  • Gelman
Oh, wow. And I just saw the Washington Monument... in the complete WRONG area. From this vantage point, the Monument would be in front of the White House. Big fail.
  • buckleup
who... cares which way a building is facing in a POSTER, god, get a life dude.
  • Every one of these posters is laughably ridiculous.

#1: An aircraft carrier called the John F Kennedy is destroying the whitehouse. hahaha

#2: That looks like an earthquake one would expect to see in a VegiTales movie. lol

#3: Jesus is literally diving into the newly allocated ocean. rotfl
  • Gelman
    Diving? No, he's yelling, "Bellyflop!!!"
  • lol
  • Lloyd
This cracked me up so I had to do it. =D

  • Scruffmcgruff
Lol have you ever seen veggie tales?
  • Hell yeah I've seen VegiTales!
  • Mike
The posters - and I am guessing the movie - is so overdone, so obviously fake that it is CGI Porn. The film's tag line is "We Were Warned" - you know, that can be interpreted in more than one way...
  • Felipe F.
another crappy end-of-the-world movie you must watch XD

Roland Emmerich without earth destruction would be like Michael Bay without explotions
  • Andyrooskie
Dude REALLY hates the white house, doesn't he?
  • whitespot
lol i didn't see if until you mentioned
  • Yeah. I never realized how small a national monument was compared to a fucking AIRCRAFT CARRIER. Makes you...think?

Also if you look REALLY HARD, you can see the Washington Monument apparently being attacked by birds
  • Gelman
The Washington Monument is in the complete wrong area. It would be BEHIND the viewer from this vantage point. They're using the wrong side of the White House. Geography FAIL.
  • blazedays
In addition the aircraft carrier JFK has been decommisioned for a couple of years and parked in the mothball yard up in Philadelhpia. Unless it was reactivated there would be no aircraft on the deck as shown in the trailer.
  • Andyrooskie
LOL- Vegabro, I know he's just using it because it's a recognizable landmark, but I just think it's amusing how often he destroys it in his movies. :-)
  • I don't think it is a personal hatred of it. I just think that if you are going to destroy the world, there are certain landmarks you gotta show being destroyed. NYC in general, The Eiffel Tower, The White House, Statue of Liberty, Big Ben, Colosseum, etc.

The statue in Brazil is a new one to be seen being destroyed, from what I can remember.
  • papasanchez
Nothing wrong with a bit of bubblegum for the eyes and a good brain break for two hours! Lets all get off our intellectual high horses. We all know what his films are like and in a childish way I love them. It does exactly what it says on the tin and I can switch off for a few hours. Peace.
  • i think...
Vast world landscapes crumbling down and dieing just don't scare people. If it did, people would try a little harder to not slowly kill it with pollution.
Disasters are only scary if they're up close and personal like Cloverfield or the plane scene in Knowing.
should be a fun watch but these just are not that scary
  • starscream9289
The third poster is pretty intense.

    JESUS CRUSH PUNY HUMANS!
  • danno
    haha! Yes indeed.
  • ZQ
What could have taken this movie apart and be somewhat original is if it was filmed first person style, like Cloverfield.
  • lungstarr
Cloverfield was Godzilla for the credit crunch generation
  • existenz
His movies always look cool in the advertising. Then you see them...and they are a big letdown. 10,000 B.C. was the worst big budget movie of the last ten years.

Special effects should be fun though.
  • bosbolo
The only thing that bothers me about the carrier/whitehouse poster is that they added the washington monumnet in the background, but now it looks like the wave is coming from the west. It should be coming from the east i.e. Atlantic Ocean. just picky.
  • jason11474
Actually I am sitting two blocks from the White House in my office and can tell you that while the posters (and movie) may be horribly inaccurate, the front of the WH faces North. So, the 'camera' angle is looking Southward and the monument is in fact South of the WH (although the angle shows it slightly off to the west as well which it is not). This means that the water is in fact coming from the East. Oh, and the Atlantic is about 50 to 60 miles away! I am still taking the kids to see it though. Mindless escapism in full effect.
  • Gelman
WRONG. You need to go for a walk at lunch time. The side of the White House shown in the poster is the South Lawn side. The wave is, in fact, coming from West Virginia here. Not to mention, the Washington Monument in the picture is now located somewhere on "K" street according to the Art Department.
  • The awe factor has been drained from movies and posters like these. Been there, seen that.
  • clarencesomerset
Emmerich's pretty much exhausted the world destruction genre with this one.

Watched ID4 yesterday, and except for the Mac uploading the virus into the alien mothership bit, it was awesome.
  • Duke
The Statue of Christ is also completely wrong in relation with the position of the Sugarloaf. And it is much more higher.
  • James
You gotta hand it to Emmerich, his movies have great looking posters/desktops.
  • Doesn't this director always make movies like this? Isn't HE sick of it by now?
  • lux
    wow.. most inaccurate posters ever..
  • Chris
Why is it that in disaster films, except for a few, the president is black? May it be that all these directors are prophets and they knew the world would end during the Obama Administration?
  • Does anyone know what skyline the earthquake poster is depicting?

    ...Or if it's made up?
  • frelling_cute
Is that Los Angeles in the poster?
  • frelling_cute
After reading some of the comments, I know I have to rent Vegi Tales just to see the quakes.
  • stevenkar
2012, AVATAR, TWILIGHT 2, possibly CHRISTMAS CAROL and SHERLOCK HOMES are the only movies that have a chance of reaching or surpassing $200 million at the domestic BO.
  • Freak
Almost the same monuments/places in disaster movies...except for the Jesus from Brazil..

C´mon hollywood, there are more places to destroy in the world than the US...and there are more things to do movies about...this is something like "The day after tomorrow 2", he would at least do the posters different, the artwork is almost the same...
  • Tatiana
What's absolutely amazing to me here is how many people are commenting on the "realism" of the ad posters.

You all really need to get a life.

It's a disaster movie (FICTION, people!) about a supposed prophecy (FICTION, people!) from the Mayans about the end of the world (FICTION, people!)

It's escapism, pure and simple. Are some of you truly that anal retentive that placement of buildings or structures on a poster is the best you can come up with?

    WHO CARES?!?!?

    It's a movie. It's a disaster movie. Live a little. Er ... while there's still time.
  • David
Stop whining. It's just a movie, movies always has been fiction. The posters has been done like this on purpose. If you don't like it, don't see it. This guy doesn't make movies because he wants to destroy the world, The Day After Tomorrow has been made because he read the book The Coming of Global Superstorm and 2012 because he's amazed by all the stuff about 2012. These two are the only one disaster movies that he has made, Godzilla is about monsters, Independence Day is about aliens and 10.000 b.c. is about tribes. And I'm sure there's going to be some surprises and if there isn't, at least will be a good movie.
  • kurmancidilan
