Overture Films has released a trailer for Grant Heslov’s The Men Who Stare At Goats. Based on Jon Ronson’s 2004 book, Ewan McGregor stars in this so-unbelievable-yet-true story of a reporter who is chasing after a crazy story. U.S. Army First Earth Battalion unit member Lyn Cassady (George Clooney) claims to be part of an experimental U.S. military unit using ancient Chinese mind techniques to develop paranormal powers for American soldiers. This elite experimental group have developed “unparalleled psychic powers to read the enemy’s thoughts, pass through solid walls, and even kill a goat simply by staring at it.”

Aside from the clunky voice over, the film looks like it might be a fun adventure, and you can’t go wrong with this cast — This dark comedy also features Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey. The screenplay was also featured on the 2006 Black List, a listing of the best unproduced screenplays of the year. The film is set to premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival, before hitting theaters nationwide on November 6th. Watch the trailer linked below, and as always, leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Watch the trailer exclusively on Apple: Small, Medium, Large, 480P, 720P, 1080P.

Official Plot Synopsis: In this quirky dark comedy inspired by a real life story you will hardly believe is actually true, astonishing revelations about a top-secret wing of the U.S. military come to light when a reporter encounters an enigmatic Special Forces operator on a mind-boggling mission. Reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) is in search of his next big story when he encounters Lyn Cassady (Academy Award®winner George Clooney), a shadowy figure who claims to be part of an experimental U.S. military unit. According to Cassady, the New Earth Army is changing the way wars are fought. A legion of “Warrior Monks” with unparalleled psychic powers can read the enemy’s thoughts, pass through solid walls, and even kill a goat simply by staring at it. Now, the program’s founder, Bill Django (Oscar® nominee Jeff Bridges), has gone missing and Cassady’s mission is to find him. Intrigued by his new acquaintance’s far-fetched stories, Bob impulsively decides to accompany him on the search. When the pair tracks Django to a clandestine training camp run by renegade psychic Larry Hooper (two-time Oscar® winner Kevin Spacey), the reporter is trapped in the middle of a grudge match between the forces of Django’s New Earth Army and Hooper’s personal militia of super soldiers. In order to survive this wild adventure, Bob will have to outwit an enemy he never thought possible. The Men Who Stare at Goats was inspired by Jon Ronson’s non-fiction bestseller of the same name, an eye-opening and often hilarious exploration of the government’s attempts to harness paranormal abilities to combat its enemies.

The Men Who Stare At Goats hits theaters on November 6th 2009.

    I think it works.

Also looking forward to UP IN THE AIR. Maybe I should give this Reitman guy a chance.
  • sauce_1
The voice over seems cheesy, especially the line at the end about adventure, But I think the great cast and funny story will more than make up for it. Hopefully.

man George Clooney career is really booming lately

It seems sorta like a classic film. Its trying to do what good films do by not giving in to tropes. Kinda gives me the vibe of spy's like us. Not as slap sticky but sorta the crazy heros who have to do stuff by other means.

Damn, Clooney has really cornered the market on playing soldiers/agents operating in the Middle East. Hats off to him for enduring those exterior desert shoots.
  • I believe the SAT comparison is:

George Clooney is to Middle East Militarist as Kiera Knightly is to Historical Costume Drama Debutant
  • And here I thought this was going to be a film about Tom Green...
  • dob
    yes.

"U.S. Army First Earth Battalion unit member Lyn Cassady claims to be part of an experimental U.S. military unit using ancient Chinese mind techniques to develop paranormal powers for American soldiers". F**k. I'm sold.
  • Topolab
Jeff Bridges as a hippie soldier? That for me is enough.
  • Palmer
Wow, it looks great. And Bridges character is somewhat similar to his other character The Dude. Hell, in the scene where Bridges is walking of the roof they even have the same hair style.
  • PalmliX
Haha omg this movie looks awesome! I was sold once I saw Jeff Bridges character.
  • Not bad, not bad at all.
  • cellchild
looks hilarious. loks like something that christopher buckley could write
  • DeadlyPorpoise
The guy who wrote the book - Jon Ronson - has a pretty good rep as an investigative journalist.

I recommend his other book - THEM - which is basically him getting in with conspiracy nuts and extremists! People like: David Ike ( Jewish Lizards rule the world), the Bilderberg Group (we rule the world) and Islamic fundamentalists (F*ck the world).

Think of a well meaning and genuine, very English, bumbling version of Ali G and you have it.

He also did a great documentary on Stanley Kubrick's which you can watch on Google video here: http://tinyurl.com/57t8fz
  • I am surprisingly really looking forward to this :)
  • DoctorTran37
Is it me or has Jeff Bridges been going back to The Dude a bit lately? I mean.... he certainly looks and seems Dudely in this, and he was certainly a "Dude gone industrial" in How to Lose Friends & Alienate People... Either way it looks great.
  • quintushalls
Do you think he will be The Dude in Tron:Legacy?
  • DoctorTran37
    I certainly hope so.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Time will show that The Dude should have won Bridges an Oscar.

Is it sad that I'd pay about anything to see another adventure of The Dude someday? Men Staring at Goats will have to suffice for now.
  • freemachine
One of the finest performances ever, The Dude that is. Bridges didn't get his due respect from the Academy. As a side note, I also felt that way about Jeff Daniels' performance in The Squid and the Whale.
  • DoctorTran37
I agree. I'd pretty much pay anything to see The Dude and Walter at it again.
  • Jeff Bridges is God. This trailer was hilarious.
  • quintushalls
I remember a while back reading about the Pentagon scientists wanting to create a device that forced enemy soldiers to psychically being controlled to surrender. But I thought it was something legitimate out of psychological methods, like scaring the enemy through planted sound devices that blast goats being killed alive, like the music played to oust Noriega, or illusionist trickery to make the U.S. soldiers appear magical, something a submissive religious fanatic would be scared of. I can't imagine it would be as ridiculous as it was. I know we did experiments in the 50s on LSD and paranormal psychology experiments, but the program utterly failed. Why on Earth would they revive it without some kind of scientific proof that it exist?
  • quintushalls
I found a video of Lieutenant Colonel Jim Channon telling his side of the story on Youtube. The funny thing is that he really looks likes Jeff Bridges!

  • the U.S military always does weird experiments like this. I must say the "true story" synopsis is VERY strange, though.

    Google "The Montauk Project".

    Not saying I believe.
  • comet1960
Great casting. Movie seems funny and interesting story
  • LuMendz
Made me laugh a couple of times. Jeff Bridges will always be The Dude.
  • whsmith
Never heard of the book, but it sounds similar to stories told by supposed Army Major Ed Dames who used to be a frequent guest on the Art Bell radio program in the late 90s early 00s. The guy is a hilarious fraud and con man who sells tapes training people how to use the secret psychic "remote viewing" techniques he learned from the US Army.

    But this movie looks amazing.
  • Kyle C.
Looks great. McGregor, Clooney, Bridges are Spacey looking really good! This looks like Three Kings meets The Big Lebowski. Man, I'm gonna have that song stuck in my head for the rest of the day, "It's more than a feelin'!"
  • kjell
    Hahaha this looks great
  • doctorfumanchu
I hate the use of the word quirky when it comes to indie comedies.
  • I'm sure I'm not the only person (to lazy to check) the irony between Clooney comparing himself to Jedi, when he's talking to Obi Wan himself.
  • Will watch this movie one day.
  • mike
will watch this movie after the world ends 12-23 -2012
  • zeynep
What is the name of the song at the end of the trailer ?
