the fixer

We haven’t heard much from writer/director Cameron Crowe’s (Fast Times at Rigemont High, Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire) since production on his next film, the Hawaiian adventure romantic comedy Deep Tiki, got postponed until 2010. Crowe decided to also direct a music video for the band Pearl Jam. Watch the video embedded after the jump.

The video is a typical live performance shoot, and not much more. I think I’m most disappointed because Crowe’s films play like a music album, cut to songs perfectly synced to the drama on screen. I would have loved to see him actually direct a video featuring a narrative story, just to see what he could do when dialogue is no longer required at all.

The video was filmed at Seattle’s Shadowbox Theater, and aside from shooting the performance with green screens on the sides and background, projecting images of the crowd and or band, it’s a pretty typical video. Not that I’m expecting a music video to have a budget now-a-days. Not that I’ve seen a music video on MTV in years… As the music industry continues to struggle, gone are the days of big money big production music videos.

Love Pearl Jam and this song is pretty good. But this is a terrible video. Have definitely lost a lot of respect for Crowe these past few years and this doesn't help.

Much props to to Crowe for helping Pearl Jam. Love Pearl Jam as well. Their music video for "Do the Evolution" I adored back in the day. Crowe hung out with Pearl Jam alot and used some of the ideas for Almost Famous.

    what a terrible video...
  • the keying is terrible.
you'd think they'd know how to pull a proper key.

What you have to remember is that this is Pearl Jam. They rarely make narrative music videos anymore. Almost every video that they've made in the last decade or so has been a live performance video, featuring music recorded live. It's not synced to the studio recording of the song. What you hear during the video is what they played at the shoot. That's what makes it cool. The green screen stuff is weird, but doing a narrative wouldn't be appropriate for this band. 'World Wide Suicide' had some abstract aspects to it, and 'Life Wasted' was just bizarre. It certainly wasn't a narrative in any way. They're all about the live show, so this video is appropriate for them, even if it has bad keying.

Pearl Jam hasn't made a live-action video with a narrative since Jeremy, and I doubt they ever will again. I really wouldn't call this video a "typical live performance shoot" either. First of all, it's live and not lip-synched, that's a rarity. Secondly, it's directed in a unique manner, the moving close-ups on Eddie (not to mention the green screens) aren't something you see in many performance videos.

And to the person talking about the "keying" what are you talking about? Are you saying that the band doesn't know how to stay "in key"? I think they do, anything done out of key is probably an artistic choice. Or are you saying the chroma-keying is off? Once again, I'm betting that's a stylistic choice, this is a video, not Transformers.
  • I am definitely talking about the chroma keying.
It's a bizarre "artistic choice" to have your edges look like shit.
Look at their hair, very poorly done. Wonder is the green screen was lit too dark.

I think it can be an artistic choice to have your "edges look like shit" I also don't think that was the focus of the production. They obviously didnt care if it looked "real" because the effect isn't one that can be real.

Doesn't really matter anyways, the important thing is that the song kicks ass.

I think the video's style was on purpose. This is Cameron Crowe we're talking about right? I think he knows what he's doing.
  • Looks slightly better in the the better quality vid uploaded by the band - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj-sFIHQWLY - still a bit naff though. Shame really, nice comeback single.
