Bored To Death Full Trailer

bored to death

HBO has premiered a full trailer for the new television series Bored to Death, which is being billed as “A Noir-otic Comedy”. Jason Schwartzman stars as Jonathan Ames (well, not the real Jonathan Ames, although he is a writer on the show), an alcoholic noir-fiction-obsessed writer who impulsively decides to become an unlicensed private detective. The show also features Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) as Ames’ best friend Ray, a comic book writer, who along with Ames’ editor (played by Ted Danson), winds up tagging along for a few detective cases. Seems like a great concept for a television show.

The trailer also features guest appearances from John Hodgman (Daily Show, Mac ads), Patton Oswalt, Kirsten Wiig, Parker Posey, Bebe Neuwirth, Oliver Platt and while I didn’t notice her in the trailer, IMDb also lists the wonderful Olivia Thirlby. And if you’re not sold yet… Paul Feig, of Freaks and Geeks, The Office and Arrested Development fame, directs a couple episodes. Check out the trailer now embedded after the jump. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Bored to Death premieres on HBO on September 20th at 9:30pm.

Looks terrible...$100 says it doesn't get renewed. The only reason I'm hanging on to my HBO subscription is for Curb, Entourage, Eastbound, and Big Love, though I have to admit that True Blood has really grown on me. I really miss the good old days: Sopranos, Deadwood, Oz...they seem to have given up on edgy dramas and moved into quirky comedies and hooker/porn documentaries.

You just gave more reasons to keep HBO than I can for TV in general. America Undercover is the only thing I recall enjoying on HBO.
  • Basically this seems like every other Jason Schwartzman project, he plays a crappy character and makes up for it by having really good, talented people around him. I almost feel this character could have been more compelling if it was Demitri Martin
  • wait that wasn't demitri martin?

This isn't exactly a 1930s styled detective noir that I would prefer, or even a proper bumbling detective story like Pink Panther, it just seems like a generic comedic drama. This is as much about being a detective as Weeds is about marijuana. But with some really good comedians in the mix, I will at least see the pilot before making any decisions. I can't say anyone would be excited to see this show. When you compare it to some of the other great shows on television, I would only watch this if I was bored.

Hey look, it's Jason Schwartzman playing the same character as Jason Schwartzman!
  • Schmoozer
Olivia Thirlby was the girlfriend in the beginning!

It looks decent enough for me to give it a chance... nothing special but the talent alone has me curious.
  • Man I was hoping this would be more like Jason Schwartzman's last show "Yo Teach!"...
  • I thought this was really funny. I love the "I'm on marijuana minutes" line. Oh Danson, you're a silly goose. Also, anything to get more Galifianakis. I still watch "Out Cold" for the Zach action.
  • Name
Olivia Thirlby is the girl telling him that if he didn't stop drinking they would break up. Just a split second but she's there.

This looks terrible. Slowly over time Jason Schwartzman has become more and more unbearable to watch.

...I guess I'll be the first commenter to say I'm really psyched for this. Always have loved Schwartzman. Danson and Galifianakis look good and it seems to have a terrific cast. I'll be watching.

I like that you're like original poster who says he only keeps his HBO subscription for 4 current shows then can only list 3 in what he refers to as "the good old days".

I'm not a huge Schwartzman fan but don't have anything against him, really like the supporting cast and concept. Its hard to nail down but something about the aesthetic seems off to me. Still going to give this a shot and hope it surprises.

looks daft and the script seems obvious. Why did this pass the pilot?!
  • keith
bring back the proper dramas HBO. Even True Blood is obvious writing...
  • capawesome
After The Wire. Things have gone down hill. HBO doesn't have those epic standard shows anymore. And the ones that could have gone even furthur they let die by the wayside.
  • dianehussman
I believe that's Olivia Thirlby at the beginning of the trailer telling Schwartzman's character to "quit drinking and smoking pot". You said you didn't see her in the trailer but clearly that has to be her right there.
  • snooty!
  • If John Hodgman is playing a literary agent that would be delightfully meta.

Can the video size get any smaller?

i will definitely watch this and i'm sure many others will too. looks like the show has solid writing with a great cast. i suppose all you critics saying jason schwartzman is playing the same role he always does don't like bill murray much either. what do want? schwartzman playing a dying cancer victim or action hero?

This looks very entertaining. Then again, I like noir, and I like Charlie Kaufman, and this seems almost like light-hearted Charlie Kaufman noir.
If this were a network show & not HBO, we'd be jumping for joy; as it stands, it looks far better than any other *comedy* HBO has on right now with the exception of Flight of the Conchords, (and I include Curb and Entourage. Curb=Larry David whining. Joy. Entourage = repetitive.) Only saw part of an episode of Eastbound & Down.

I have seen full episodes and it is my favorite new show...funny, sweet and cool..Jason Schwartzman fits this role the way Dustin Hoffman fit The Graduate.

Oliver Platt, Ted Danson, Zach Galifianakis, Patton Oswalt...come on it won't suck. I do however think it would make a better movie than an HBO show. I'm just stoked for the real Entourage set in NYC...now THAT is gonna be good.
