VOTD: The Making of The Goonies

I recently rediscovered this vintage 1980’s EPK documentary The Making of The Goonies on uniquedaily. I remember seeing this seven minute behind the scenes doc when I was younger. I love how a big focus of the piece is how director Richard Donner struggled to work with kid stars. And its always fun to see behind the scenes footage from one of your favorite childhood films. I wonder if Warner Bros has a lot more behind the scenes footage in a vault somewhere. Would love to see them release a longer cut of some of this stuff when Goonies hits Blu-ray.

  • Wow, they don't even do making-ofs like this anymore. So 80s, this clip is f*cking wonderful.

I miss docs about films like this. The "behind-the-scenes" that you see on HBO is such garbage.
  • ...I believe this making of is actually ON the European BD. what, no US release? this is the stuff you want to see. a little honesty makes these generic videos a bit more real. usually it's just stretched out tv spots from the marketing mill. luckily we have much better audiocommentaries now in which filmmakers aren't afraid to be honest. kudos to WB though, I mean, they also could've NOT shown this.

The boat scene by Donner is genius. He got a genuine reaction from them seeing the boat for the first time. I'm almost positive directors don't care that much anymore to get a scene like that. Reminds me of Kubrick when he did The Shining. He told the kid that played Danny that the movie was a comedy and shot scenes that you just don't see anymore in movies.
