Two years and one day ago, Peter told you about Warner Bros. intention to bring a new version of The Wizard of Oz to the big screen. The studio had licensed Todd McFarlane’s Twisted Land of Oz action figure series, which portrays Dorothy as something of a bondage fanatic and the Tin Woodsman as the frightening man-chine at the head of this post, and set Josh Olson about writing a screenplay. At that time Olson was quoted as saying:

I want this to be Harry Potter dark, not Se7en dark.

Since then… nothing. Today, though, the story has resurfaced in a British newspaper. Does this mean that we’re on the verge of seeing this project come into the light?

According to The Sunday Express, filming on this new Oz “could start next year” and Dakota Fanning is “being tipped” to play the lead. This might be new information, but it’s basically sourceless and very possibly truthless. The only material in the Express’ story to not be two years old but to lead to another source is a quote from producer Basil Iwanyk:

It will be set in the present day and feature Dorothy’s granddaughter.

Which can be traced back to a Screen Daily article from earlier this month. There, the full quote ran:

And because we’re in the world of ‘I have no shame’, we’re doing the next chapter in The Wizard Of Oz, which will be set in the present day and feature Dorothy’s granddaughter.

So, in essence, what I’m telling you is that the Express journalist has simply pulled together some existing quotes and added some empty ‘maybe, perhaps’ tips in regards of the casting and shoot date. I’d say that Dakota Fanning is no more or less likely to star in this film than Anna Sophia Robb, Saoirse Ronan or Jodelle Ferland. Or, for that matter, a complete unknown. We just don’t know.

There’s another Oz do-over in the traps, a fully-CG rendition being directed by John Boorman. Something tells me we’ll be seeing that one first and, even sooner than that, the 1939 film version is headed back to US cinemas for a Blu-Ray hawking special appearance.

in a perfect world, we'd get a writer (as good as olsen) who'd want to do the 'se7en darkness', and this film would get made the way the toys depict. i don't remember the original post from a couple years back, but what an insanely unique film this could be! i really hope we don't get a watered down version, or that it gets stuck in development hell.

this really came out of left field (for me) and if it got the green-light, it'd be at the top of my most anticipated list. holy shit these toys and the film possibilities are gonna resonate! i really hope this gets made properly.

lets see what a cast could look like:

dorothy: dakota fanning (i think she's got badass chops)
    tin man: gary oldman
    scarecrow: steve buschemi
    lion: paul giamatti
wicked witch: laura linney (a tough role...i might think of someone else)
    the wizard: jeff bridges

I do love the idea of Giamatti as the lion

Guess what. You just set up this movie with a perfect cast, someone notify the director.

Why not just remake the book, but politicize it for today's politics.
  • I don't think Dakota Fanning is a good fit for Dorothy.
  • LucioTortuga
todays politics? would they go down ebt card road?
  • Name
WOW how, let's take another "family" title and make it "dark" YES GENIUS!! This could only suprise me more if it was a goth retelling.

Aren't there 15 Oz books by L. Frank Baum? Why not just adapt some of those as a series of movies LOTR/Potter/Narnia-style? Seriously, how hard is that?
  • I agree with the previous poster about other Frank Baum Oz books. In addition there are official 40 Oz titltes ( 14 by Baum, 19 by Ruth Thompson, etc). Also Frank Buam have many other stories outside of Oz series.
  • lobsterfancy
Alot of the Oz books are terrible and lack the iconic character of Dorothy and are basically rehashes of the first story. They did adapt "Return to Oz" which was excellent, albeit very different from the book.
  • Saladinho
    That was a good movie.
  • Saladinho
Yeah, remaking some of the other Baum books sounds like a good idea. If they did it right, using a series of different directors, it could be a real cool thing.

I would love to see Wizard of OZ to be made utilizing current technology like in Harry Potter movies series.
  • cross222
i would actualy audition for this movie as the lion or the tin woods man the lions bad ass and so is the tin woodsman

  • "Harry Potter dark..." *sigh*.
  • I could not agree with your *sigh* more...
  • whats wrong with se7en dark?
  • Danno
    Perhaps she'd consider staying there?
  • LuMendz
Dakota Fanning + bondage fetish = not a good idea.
  • Mike
As long as it keeps the Munchkin suicide and still syncs up with "Dark Side Of The Moon" I'm there.
  • Shannonwt
se7en dark would probable be a tad to much and harry potter dark would screw it up it should be in between the too now that would be perfect and dakota fanning was made for da role like she was way creepy in hide and seek.
  • adamroebling1
hm. I LOVE the original. If they do remake it, it better be damn good. the original is just perfect i see no need to expand upon it. Maybe if they dont make the new one a musical.
  • destiny
dnt relly love da idea cuz i love da old version of it nd it should alwayz b classic not new cuz if it would b remake then itll b dum ....
remakes alwayz makes da actorz look bad and shows much more stupid action that dont really have any point to it so it does need to be focuz the point not about someone charming taking over tha movie...
