Inglourious Basterds

The Weinstein Co have pulled out a win, just when they needed it. Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds won this weekend at the box office, taking in an estimated $37.6 million domestically and $27.5 million internationally for a worldwide weekend total of $65.1 million. Good to see two great films at the top like this. Both deserve everyone's money!
  • quintushalls
I won't be able to see it until Friday, but I can hardly wait!

I'm very very happy to see that Tarantino's film did so well. I read somewhere that if he didn't deliver on this film that he was going to have to change his approach. I think that's complete and utter b.s. and would be a tragedy if it were true.

Luckily Tarantino has delivered on every film he's ever made and the audiences responded in kind on this one.

I would rather the entire film industry go under than to see a visionary artist like Quentin be forced to make movies in any other way than what he thinks is right. I'm relieved that won't be necessary.

Visionary? He's great but take it easy.
  • cmac8219
    You take it easy.
  • PalmliX
haha, well I suppose that depends on your definition. To me Tarantino is visionary because he has a very specific 'vision' in mind that differs from the norm and seemingly follows it very faithfully and successfully.
  • Tell me the other film similar to Inglorious Basterds that you can go see this weekend? Or earlier this year? None.

How many bad-guys-are-the-protagonist movies were popular before Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction? None. And how many afterward? Too many.

His films are unlike anything else on our screens. He's a visionary. I don't care about the homages/ripoffs/copying/whatever. It takes talent to do it the way he does it, no question.

I loved Inglourious Basterds! I was on the edge of my seat the entire film!

HOORAY FOR QUENTIN! :D Glad I could contribute to this success.
  • I always say that when I see this kind of movies. Last week I was sooo happy to contribute with 500 Days of Summer.
  • super_aj
ha! yeah, I saw 500 days and Moon at Cinevegas film fest. but I loved both so much I went and saw em again just so I could feel good about paying for them when they hit theaters for real.

Uh Oh!! looks like the P.J. Fanboys turned Tail!! lol. But honestly, im glad i could contribute to go see District 9 and am quite amply looking forward to seeing Mr. Tarandino's new work. But I noticed how, as soon as Inglorious Basterds came out, that all (ok, not all but a large portion) of the buzz that D9 garnered kinda faded into buzz for IB. But either way, im sure your money is well spent on either of these films!! :p

Couldn't be more happy for Basterds.

    Awesome movie FTW.
  • This is exactly what Tarantino needed after Grindhouse. I freakin loved Grindhouse but it wasn't a success at the Box Office. I guess it's nice to see Quentin do well.
  • Yea same here, I think grindhouse was something a lot of people missed out on. And I think deathproof was excellent at what it did and stands up there with every other Tarantino film I love. But it's definitely good to see this making profit, I want Quentin to have breathing room on any future projects he wants to work on.

    This is a wonderful comeback.

Although I thought there were parts that needed some additional editing, overall, Basterds was a blast.
  • Eli Roth came into the theater I was in(Vista in LA) and sat next to me. He came in a bit late and left when we see the girl at the theater for the first time. He was watching everybody's reactions more than the film. It was pretty awesome. I was sitting next the the Bear Jew while he was bashin' in Nazi skulls on screen.
  • wow. GI Joe is only at 120 million and its the 3rd weekend. Looks like there won't be a sequel. \\

    District 9 is doing fasntastic!
  • I agree, Death Proof was an excellent movie. It's an example of what happens when marketing teams get their hands on something different.
  • Inglourious Basterds Is Just Awesome After a Long time i got too See Tarantinos Good Flick On the First day,
    It was Worth The time,
  • I hope that "District 9" can muster the same staying power that "The Hangover" did.

Man, I can't wait to see Inglourious Basterds again this weekend when I go catch The Final Destination, which is gonna be awsome in 3-D. Also, note to all you people who keep paying an extra couple dollars for the 3-D version, just keep your glasses, don't throw them out, and pay for the regular version and sneek into the 3-D one. Just sayin'.

    @ Kyle. C

My local theater sets up the exit from a 3D film such that you must pass a gauntlet of ushers with trash cans collecting the glasses, and they watch you like a hawk. I suppose you could leave a film just slightly early in order to bypass them, but then you run into the real problem. The tickets for the 3D version of a film are marked with a visible stamp and they place ticket checkers outside the door during the entire film.

3D films are not all that much more expensive than evening showings in general. Given that I don't see that many 3D films in year, I don't mind shelling out a few more bucks once in a while. Maybe if I were still back in high school or was super strapped for cash I'd do it, but I'd like to think I've come a long way from then.

    ** Spoiler Fest **

wow. i just watched Basterds and am pulsating with adrenaline.
QT has out done himself. like his previous works, it is a fantasy film about film, where nothing is clean and everyone is implicated. but we, the audience are more involved than ever.
everyone entering the theater signed up to indulge the fantasy of revenge, to see handsome Pitt lead his band of Jewish Americans toward justice. however, i didn't know that i would be completely enamored by Landa, quietly rooting for his character as much as i was (and was supposed to be) rooting for the demise of his mission.
of course, the only way for revenge against hitler is through (the explosive power of) film, and it was both beautiful (the justified laugh of Shoshonna) and unbearable. Just after we watch Hitler and his Nazi audience revel at the deaths of their enemies, we, the audience of our theatre, watch National Socialism get its dues, and in doing so, our role is complicated, tarnished.
in doing so, we left the theater getting what we wanted, but feeling uneasy in it. as a film it was a beautifully constructed meta-narrative, as an experience it was complex and so participatory. it was fantastic.
