Before you rush out to Inglourious Basterds and/or Avatar footage, chew on a couple of quick casting bites for you at the end of this Friday.

First, Priest, the film by Scott Stewart starring Paul Bettany, has a villain, Karl Urban, and a new heroine, Maggie Q. The film follows Stewart and Bettany’s pairing on Legion (but is not related) and is scripted by Cory Goodman based on the TokyoPop comic. According to THR, Bettany is “a warrior priest and vampire fighter who teams with a sheriff (Cam Gigandet) and warrior priestess (Maggie Q) to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.” Urban is Black Hat, the vampire leader and a himself a former priest. After seeing footage from Stewart’s Legion I’m curious about this effort. Nice to see Screen Gems doing some potentially fun genre stuff that pushes beyond another Resident Evil regurgitation.

After the break, Tommy Lee Jones does another Cormac McCarthy adaptation, this time with Samuel L. Jackson. No, it’s not Blood Meridian.

Variety reports that Jones and Jackson will share the spotlight in The Sunset Limited, an adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy play of the same name. The good news: Jones is directing. I have nothing but praise for his previous feature as director, The Thre Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and I’m thrilled to see him directing again. Even better, McCarthy has penned the screenplay himself.

According to the trade, “Jackson plays a man who saves another man (Jones) from throwing himself in front of a Harlem subway train. The act begins an exchange of ideologies as the two men from different backgrounds debate the worth of their lives.” The synopsis sounds a bit suspect, especially when you consider that the two men are simply referred to as ‘Black’ and ‘White’, and that White is a despairing professor while Black is a hopeful ex-con. But the NYT calls it “a poem in celebration of death,” and that’s intriguing as hell. HBO is bankrolling; whether this will air on cable or hit theatres is unclear.

  • As a fan of the manwa, I have to say that this movie could be awesome though obviously the interpretation has been skewed heavily and I don't quite get why as the plot was very decent. But hey, look at what they did to Wanted.

Can't they just make an action film of their own desire instead of destroying yet another comic book? The manwa (Korean comic) "Priest" is a brilliant piece of art and the storyline of the announced film is nothing like what happens in the comic book. Wild West? Check! Vampires? Uhm... no! In te manwa they were zombie-like creatures. Saving his niece? WTF came that from?
  • I agree man, I do not see why they bothered skewering the plot when it was a damn good plot to begin with.

sunset limited is a great [play]. i really enjoyed it. not the two people i would have normally thought to play the roles but TLJ is fantastic and i think SLJ will be great too.

I can't imagine The Sunset Limited being made into theatriacal release or at least how they would go about adapting it. It's literally 2 men in a kitchen talking about god and atheism and the meaning of life the entire time. It's a great play but i dont see how it would work as a movie, but if Mccarthy is writting the screenplay im sure it will be worth while.

As far as the Blood Meridian goes i think it would be difficult to produce a film that would could come close to capturing the intensity and awesomeness of the book.

    definately agree about Blood Meridian.
i'm not familiar with The Sunshine Limited and i'll probably never get a chance to see the play so i'm excited for the film

Why the hell has the Priest film got Cam Gigandet as a good guy. The guy is pure evil. He was put on this earth for us to hate him in films. Get him to swap roles with Urban.
  • That's like saying Gary Oldman was ONLY GOOD as a Villain...
  • Please, that's SUCH a typical, type-casting response...

Very cool news with T.L. Jones and Sam Jackson for the Sunset Limited. Looking over the NYT link to the theater adaptation and imagining these two heavyweight actors making a feature film out of that story has my interest. I think there's a lot of potential there, all the tidbits around that story sound good.
  • Ugh... I hate to see a Blood Meridian movie made, even though I'd probably go see it anyway. You know the amazing speeches by the Judge and the apocalyptic description of the landscape won't translate well into film.

    Maggie Q is cool.

They need to make a Blood Meridian movie, seriously.

I love Karl Urban AND Paul Bettany.
    Maggie Q is lucky.
LOL "Warrior Princess" still reminds me of Xena. xD

More vampires...ugh. This shit is so played out.
  • It is not originally a vampire in the manwa/Korean comic.
  • Urban and Bettany in a film together? Excellent.

let's forget Jackson for a minute.
Damn does The Sunset Limited sound awesome.
